Safety & House Rules On-board Rio...

Believe it or not, living on-board and especially sailing requires obeying a set of rules, which every crew-member has to follow without question or discussion.

It may sound strict and rigid, even cruel, but it is the fact. Every skipper has their own set of house rules on-board but basically they all have the same goal: to keep the boat and crew safe.

Researching the accidents that took place on-board, I concluded that the majority of them occurred due to human error, which was neglecting the house rules. Even though house rules might sometimes look like captains ego-trip, all crew-members have to follow them and behave in line with them.

If you follow those (sometimes stupid) rules, the captain won't have anything to complain on you while his attention would be focused to the navigation and handling the vessel. Less obvious but completely true, the level of your safety on-board increases significantly. Researching my colleagues' and my own experience from aboard sailing yachts I tried to list some of the most important house rules on-board.

The captain's word is law:

There can be only one captain on-board. Captain's orders must be obeyed without question or discussion because he has full responsibility of goods and lives aboard so he gives orders in order to safely do the maneuvers and bring the vessel to the safe port without injuries, damage or loss of life.
Captain's decisions or orders could perhaps be discussed after the vessel is safely moored, over a glass of beer. Still, only if the captain feels like explaining his decisions.
The equipment is not to be played with

This should be self-explanatory. Every single part of the deck or navigation equipment is mounted with a purpose in the sailing or navigation procedures. When not in use, they should not be touched just for fun or because of boredom. No matter how robust deck equipment looks like, incorrect use of equipment leads to its damage in most of the cases.

There are no stupid questions:

There are no stupid questions – if you do not understand the manner of functioning of the equipment, if you do not understand what captain wants from you or literally anything else that you do not understand – feel free to ask. Crew-members are good help only when they know what they are doing, while they could be the worst nightmare when they only think that they know what they are doing.

This word is often used in other context than boating and sailing but this time it represents exactly what I find the most important rule of them all. Every single thing aboard a vessel has its place and has to be put exactly on the same place all the time. Starting with deck equipment (sheets, winches, handles, jammers, fenders, lines, etc.) are always to be handled orderly and stored tidy after use. That way all sorts of injuries, such as twisted angles, browses or scratches are put to minimum.

That applies to the under deck world as well – all the dishes, plates and cutlery have to be stored in their compartments before taking off while all the cupboards, drawers and hatches have to be carefully closed. All the objects, which might be rolled over or broken, should be secured as well as the swimming toys (fins, goggles, towels and swimsuits), which have to be stored in the trunks instead of lying in the cockpit or on the transom.

I like to go that far that I ask my crew to hold their refreshing drinks in their hands even if we are motoring smoothly on the flat sea. Only one speedboat that passes us closely is enough to produces swell, which turns over the glasses, breaks them and makes the complete mess in the cockpit.

Safety first:

This rule should probably be stated on top of the list but its last place does not decrease its importance. Every captain should go through a safety briefing before taking off regardless of fine weather or experienced crew. Every crew-member has to be aware of the place of their life jackets and all the fire extinguishers. In case of emergency everybody should obey the instructions by the captain (explained in the first bullet) who should know how to handle the life raft and manage the maneuvers of abandoning the vessel.
At the end of the day all (basic) rules mentioned above could be summarized in the first and the last – if you obey the captain and maintain the safety rules your stay on-board will be respected.

Please do not hesitate to send us your comments and interesting derivatives of house rules on-board. I believe it is about just a little self-discipline required to accept them and make sailing real fun. After all, don't we all go sailing to change some of everyday habits?
I wish you a calm sea, a fine wind and a strong mast!

What an amazing adventure. If you are looking for meet new people and experience, this is a lifetime opportunity. Jose and Alex was nothing but a phenomenal host. After you come, you will understand better what I mean by phenomenal! I recommend book them if you are not in a hush and have strict deadlines because mother nature will dictate what you are going to do it. But don't worry, raining or sunny they will make sure you have a wonderful time in Fort Lauderdale. Raw food was a Michelin star level. A glass of wine, at the end of the day, was a cherry on top of the sundae. But at the end is all about the company, and that is the highest value of the package. Thank you so much for this amazing experience.

Our stay with Jose and Alex was nothing short of amazing. A girlfriend and I decided to book a last minute trip to Ft. Lauderdale and planned to spend 2 nights on the boat with one day of sailing. I have to say that finding Rio, Jose and Alex was such a stroke of luck. My only regret is that we didn't have more time to sail to the islands. The boat was beautiful, very clean and comfortable to stay on. Our day of sailing was one of the best days I've experienced in a while. We had perfect weather, were able to see and swim in clear blue water and even saw a pack of dolphins and a sea turtle. Our sunset dinner was unreal. The meals that Jose and Alex prepared were unbelievable. Everything was so fresh and beautifully presented. I'm still dreaming about the tofu stir fry and the kimchi. And that chocolate bark! It has really given me a new outlook on foods and a desire to eat fresher and cleaner (and reduced meats) :) Upon our arrival, Jose and Alex were so kind to recommend wonderful restaurants and bars for us and even drove us into town each night to drop us off. This will be a trip that I will always remember and I cannot wait for another opportunity to come back to Rio. Thank you again Jose and Alex!!! - Lauren and Brittany

My friend and I had the opportunity to stay aboard Rio for 4 days and in doing so had the immense privilege to meet Jose and Alex. It was a trip of a lifetime and we could not recommend Jose and Alex enough. From pre booking to post vacation, they have been extremely helpful in every detail. Their warmth and compassion, passion for healthy living and love of life is contagious and we could not be happier to have had this experience. The food they served was not only art work and beautiful to look at but delicious. It was a feast for all senses. They sailed us expertly through beautiful calm blue skies and through a furious storm, they let us participate as much and as little as we wanted and we learned valuable sailing tips. Thank you Jose and Alex for an amazing time aboard Rio! All the best, always.

If you want the perfect vacation that transports you to another world; then this is the spot for you. Jose and Alex are phenomenal hosts; making sure at every moment we are all comfortable while still minding the sails. The food was incredible! Freshly made juices, salads, even Thai style vegetarian dishes that pack so much flavour you didn't know existed in vegetarian cooking. Sailing across the Gulf Stream is something everyone should do once in their life - or a few times if you can manage. Experiencing the wind at your side while taking in the vastness of the ocean is something that you cannot get just sailing around a harbour or on some tour boat. This is the true experience of sailing and the freedom that comes with it. Don't look any further; if you are interested in beautiful Azul coloured waters, multitudes of marine life and outstanding sunsets/rises than you found just the listing. Sit back relax and enjoy the sun, sails and wind at your back.

My dear Christi, Reading these words bring me a feeling of joy, I am truly grateful that you and your guests had the courage to say "yes" and have the trust to leave the safety of land behind and navigated through the night to a distant shore across the Gulfstream and the Florida Straits. You are truly awesome! But first read what it is that I feel, these quotes describe a lot of me. I cannot believe that they also describe a lot of you! This particular one is one of my very (URL HIDDEN) it reminds me of you. It is by Charles Cook: "Until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore, you will not know the terror of being forever lost at sea." I believe life without courage and integrity is a life filled with emptiness! I've come to realize that you were composed of those two essential living meaning to life. Some of the best quotes I can find in my minds eye, to truly describe the feeling I have every time I set sail, are these.... "The fishermen know that the sea is dangerous and the storm terrible, but they have never found these dangers sufficient reason for remaining ashore." — Vincent Van Gogh, Painter "It is not that life ashore is distasteful to me. But life at sea is better." — Sir Francis Drake, Sea Captain You are all very welcome back on board Rio any day!! Thank you so much for your kind words and for most of all, your courage, your love and your understanding. Until we see each other again, happy sailing and safe journeys to all of you. Namaste, Jose
