Just like the Vosges, staying at Gilbert's had its ups and downs.
Upon arrival there were some unpleasant surprises. You have to pay for bedsheets, towels, and for cleaning afterwards. This wasn't included in the advertisement. Furthermore, Gilbert did not expect 4 persons (which we indicated in the reservation). I agree with him that the house is a bit too small for four persons.
The location of the house is nice, the apartment is located near the city center, the lake is a 15 minute walk and the supermarket is close.
The house itself also had some unpleasant issues. First of all the halls have a terrible smell. The beds are the worst. It is probably more comfortable to sleep on bare rocks in the mountains outside. Furthermore, the pillows consist of a towel in a pillowcase and are utterly uncomfortable.
However, you are still expected to lie in your uncomfortable bed at 10pm sharp. Otherwise, you can expect a not so nice visit from the neighbor. He visited us 3 out of 5 nights. Apparently the walls are too thin to absorb a tv at normal volume.
Furthermore, the interior is basic. The oven is too small to fit half a pizza, and is therefore quite useless. The toilet seat falls off constantly and the shower has approximately 5 minutes of hot water.
When Gilbert came to pick up the keys, he did not even say hello. The apartment immediately was under Gilbert's scrutiny and he took cups, that we didn't even touch, to demonstrate the apartment was not clean in his opinion. Obviously fishing for the extra cleaning fee, despite our cleaning efforts. In our opinion we left the apartment in a better shape than when we arrived.
All in all, the nice location sadly cannot make up for the apartment and the unexpected costs. Personally I would love to visit Gérardmer again, but I would look for another apartment.
