I like to spend a couple of months every year in my fathers home town, Foz do Arelho, in this beautiful home that was my fathers. My dad would wait for us to visit him in Portugal so he could travel and show us his country. As we fell in love with it, it quickly became our country too. We traveled the country many times over by bus and car. So if you need help with your itinerary I can help. There is a road map on the desk in the veranda for your use. From our house, you can see half the country in day trips alone. It's a central location from which to take overnight trips and leave the bulk of your belongings back at the house.
Now we enjoy staying closer to home, enjoying family and friends in our favorite village. When friends in the USA ask me and my husband why we go to Portugal every year, we now say " the food ! "
Anyone visiting Portugal must try the cod fish (bacalhau). And my husband's favorite, pork and clams (alentejana). Thursday afternoon, the Paraiso Restaurant in Caldas serves pork jowls.
The best pork you've ever eaten!
