Home away from home
My girlfriend (boyfriend), two friends, and myself stayed in Iris' beautiful home for 6 days and 5 nights. While we were unfortunately unable to meet Iris since she was in Spain at the time, her cousins, Yasmany and Karina, were absolutely wonderful. Yasmany and his friend picked us up from the airport at the prearranged time and shuttled us to the home for 30 CUC, a very reasonable price. Upon arrival, Yasmany gave us a tour of the home, gave us keys, and plenty of additional information about our stay. Each room and space was spotless, fresh, and welcoming. We chose this particular home for the historic charm. The artistic detail is gorgeous! Throughout our stay, we felt safe, secure, welcomed, and well taken care of. Our host offered daily breakfast for 5 CUC per person. Karina and Yasmany are great cooks! Since we are vegetarian, our breakfast included fresh coffee and mango juice, bread (pan), assorted local fruit (the mango and banana is to die for), eggs and cheese (tortilla con queso), and all the items to go with it (butter, marmalade, sugar, milk). The rooms were cleaned on a daily basis (unless we were in the rooms during cleaning and there wasn't another opportunity before our hosts left for the day). Each bedroom was equipped with a very efficient air conditioner, which they request that you turn off while you are out for the day, and a locked money box. The bathrooms were western style and had plenty of hot water. We were also able to do a few loads of laundry for free. Karina happily showed us how to use it. There is no dryer, so you must hang dry your clothes. While Karina does not speak much English, we did very well communicating with gestures for words that I did not know in Spanish. Yasmany speaks fluent English, so he is a huge help! The surrounding community is quiet and kind. The stray dogs and cats on the streets will not bother you. The outdoor area is also lovely, but it was a bit too hot for us to enjoy. I would absolutely stay here again and recommend Iris' home to couples, small groups, and families.
