The small wooden house between Skala Sykamieneas and Sykaminea is designed as a place of retreat from everyday life. It is located on the Greek island of Lesbos and can accommodate two people.
Lesbos is located in the northeastern Aegean Sea near the Turkish mainland. It is the third largest Greek island after Crete and Evia. In contrast to the Cycladic islands Lesbos is heavily wooded and has a large variety of plants. The farmers live mainly from sheep farming and olive growing.
The house is located on the slope of Lepetymnos, the highest mountain on the island in an olive grove. From there you have a wide view across the sea to Turkey. Over a footpath (2.5km) downhill you reach the village of Skala Sykamineas with its small port and adjacent beach Kagia.
In Sykaminea there is a small store where you can get food and things for the household. Besides the post office and the butcher there are also two cafes on the village`s square.
One can reach Lesbos by ferry from Piraeus (Athens). From Mytelini, the capital of the island, there are buses to Skala Sykamineas. In summer there are also direct flights from other european cities to Mytelini. For your stay on the island, it is convenient to rent a car or a scooter in Mytelini or Anaxos.
Every year in November and December the olive harvest will be held. During this time the 60 olive trees of the Hermitage are emptied. With sticks, the olives are beaten from the trees and then picked up from the ground. Thereafter, they are brought to the olive press in Skala Sykamineas. A part of the olives is inserted. It takes a month till the olives lose their bitter taste and they can be consumed.
The 100l water tank in the kitchen must be filled with water. There are no water pipes in the house so that the water for the daily use is brought from a pipe outside the house. You can shower in the external bath house. For hot water, you have to fire up the hot water furnace.
Nikos is the contact persons during the stay in the hermitage. He not only helped with the construction of the wooden house, but also takes care of the guests and the maintenance of the building. He welcomes each guest and can be reached by phone in emergencies.
