Please don't listen to this disgruntled and entitled guest. Rather please look at those of our previous guests. I will explain using the guests own words.
Also, please know that this guest only wrote this review AFTER I had asked for a small portion of the damage deposit due to expenses I incurred.
"I strongly advise against booking with this renter. We rented this listing for a long weekend as a group of 8 people."
Because of the large number of guests I asked and was told that extra care would be given to keep our place clean because otherwise extra charges would apply.
"One week after our stay, I received a message from the owner accusing us of leaving the cottage in a poor state of cleanliness and demanded a 286$ extra charge for the damages incurred."
Actually I asked for $200.00, as a compromise of my cost of $286, to cover stained towels and extra cleaning fees involved after this person left, and yes it was almost a week after because I needed to get the cost from the cleaning team and their invoice before I could know how much it would cost me, and, therefore, how much to ask.
"The renter attempted to blackmail me citing a negative review if I did not pay right away."
Unfortunately hosts only have 14 days to make a claim for damages with airbnb, thus the time limit.
"Only after i refused to pay did the renter contact air bnb."
That is the procedure airbnb requires hosts to try to deal amicably with guests prior to involving airbnb.
"The extra charges were not based on evidence, photos were not provided and the description of the state of the cottage was not consistent with how it was left. The renter of the cottage cited the cleaning staff assessment and did not observe cottage post stay for himself."
I based the extra charges on the invoice of a reliable cleaning company who had nothing to gain by telling me that the home was in disarray. I my partner in the home did go and finish the clean up and organization after this guest left and I did not charge anything for his time.
"The extra charges were based on - "destroying" 6 decorative towels."
The word I used was staining. They were not destroyed, but they are no longer fit to be used by our guests so will needed to be replaced.
"The rental only had most regular white cotton towels you can imagine."
White, high end 5 star hotel quality towels, and yes they are cotton.
"The towels were not destroyed in our opinion, and if dirty could easily be bleached."
"Charges for not washing and drying the linen in the cottage. When I booked, I offered to start the linen wash as a simple courtesy. Laundry is included in the cleaning fee, as stated in the house rules book."
When a guest promises to do something, I believe them.
"- Washing of the common space floors. During our stay the floors were swept them once per day and mopped on the last day. Cleaning of the floors is included in the cleaning fee of a rental. - Charges relating to "moved furniture around". However as mentioned above the day we arrived, we realised that the 2 "common space" couches advertised as sleeping arrangements were not at all appropriate for an adult to sleep on, as they were two-seater couches. We proceeded to moving the double in the basement room to the basement living room in order to accommodate all the guests. The furniture was left moved however claiming a moving fee when being dishonest with regard to the capcity of the cottage is unfair."
The guest moved our bed into another room and left it there!
"I have rented dozens of times over air bnb and always have had positive experiences.I would suggest looking at other cottages in this area."
Sorry if you read this entire rant. I hope you disregard this obviously disgruntled guests remarks and give our place a try;-)
