Our stable is situated in the centre of the Kent Downs AONB, ideally located to explore the best of rural Kent on foot. Some of the best of the Downs and Weald AONB's country walks begin at our gate, and medieval villages, towns, country parks, castles and cathedrals are just a short drive away. Canterbury, Whitstable, Maidstone, Faversham, Rochester, Tenterden and the channel tunnel terminal are all no more than a 30 minute drive.

See ‘things to note’ for measures against Covid-19.

Mekân
Introduction to the Stable
The Stable is part of the Coach House, built in the 1800’s to serve the local manor house. The L-shaped main building is made up of two seperate wings. The western wing (where the owners reside) was the coach house & staff quarters, and the south wing (the guest accommodation) was the stable & hay loft. Together with the old cart shed and a much later garage block, this cluster of buildings on three sides of a Kentish walled garden forms ‘The Coach House’.

What you can expect
Guests have sole use of ‘The Stable’ - a self contained and very versatile 2 bedroom cottage, which cosily accommodates couples and small families, but is also capable of comfortably sleeping up to seven adults.

Configurations
There are two configurations - the first is for small groups (of up to 4) featuring one bathroom, and the second is for larger groups (of up to 7), and adds space, furniture and an extra bathroom to the ground floor. The two different configurations are shown in the photos. More information is provided in the ‘other things to note’ section.

Ground Floor
The ground floor is a split level open space with a bespoke oak kitchen on a raised brick stage, an oak-beamed lounge with solid stone floor and underfloor heating, a brick inglenook fireplace, and a dining area/3d bedroom again with a stone floor and underfloor heating. The dining area can double as a 3rd bedroom, with an extra bed discreetly behind an original cast iron and pitch pine horse stall divider. A large Netflix-enabled TV/home cinema with DVD and book libraries are in the lounge.

Situated in an elevated position overlooking the ground floor, and swooping, curving and merging into the spiral stairs and lounge area, the bespoke raised kitchen and breakfast bar commands both the entire ground floor space and the external terrace. Bifolding glass doors framed by a mature vine completely open the kitchen to your own private brick courtyard.

Upstairs
First floor rooms are accessed via original cast iron spiral staircase, which leads from the kitchen to a small landing opening to a twin bedroom. From the twin, the master bedroom is accessed via a corridor, which also gives access to a travertine bathroom featuring underfloor heating, whirlpool bath and waterfall shower.

Misafir erişimi
Private use of the stable cottage and outside brick terrace. There is lots of parking space. Access from the car park to the enclosed courtyard and residential area is via a heavy 19th century cast iron and pitch pine gate, itself an original part of the Stable. Brick walkways lead to the holiday cottage.

Dikkat edilecek diğer şeyler
The Stable has always been presented spotlessly clean for all guests. Please see any of the 145+ reviews to confirm this. However, due to Covid-19, additional care is taken to provide an even higher standard of cleanliness and implement social distancing until the outbreak is over. These measures include:
- cleaning and sterilisation of over 150 touch points and all flat surfaces between each stay
- washing linens & towels at high temperature
- self-check-in to limit unnecessary contact and implement social distancing (we nevertheless remain available if you need us and would like recommendations on the local area)

The ground floor of The Stable can be configured in two ways; for groups of up to 4, and for larger groups of up to 7 (both configurations are shown in the photos - the 2 ground floor layouts). The layout for larger groups adds a bathroom and bedroom furniture to the ground floor. If you are booking for 1-4 people and wish to have the second bathroom on the ground floor, simply book the cottage for 5 and the space will be made available.

Spiral staircases may be a potential hazard for very young children, and tall guests (significantly over 6' or 1.80m) may find headroom limited in the upstairs bedrooms due to the sloping ceilings and beams of a space that started its life as a hay loft.

Mobile phone reception is patchy. Calls can normally be made or received outside with most networks. Wireless internet access is available in the cottage, it is broadband, however please don’t expect town or city download speeds.

If guests are planning on exploring the local woodlands via the many trails and footpaths, we advise using appropriate walking boots and jeans. Though many provide stunning views from the top of the Downs out across the Thames estuary, most of our local footpaths are very infrequently used. They can be muddy, and in summer brambles can encroach where paths cross through secluded woodlands where rare orchids can be found.

The nearest station is Lenham (slow train) 2.5 miles away, alternatively Sittingbourne railway station (high speed train) is 5 miles away. There isn't usually any taxi waiting at Lenham station, but you will always find a taxi at Sittingbourne train station.

The nearest bus stop is at the Chequers Inn pub in the centre of Doddington village . A bus service operating out of Sittingbourne stops here 7 times per day, with no service at weekends. From the Chequers Inn bus stop it is a 1.5 mile 30minute uphill walk to the Stable along Faversham Road.

Please enquire if you would like to bring a pet. We welcome well-behaved dogs at the Stable. There is an additional cost associated of £15 per night to cover the added risk and additional cleaning.

Wichling is a quiet rural parish. Most of the houses are on a C-road running through the parish. Long walks along the many footpaths along the tops of the Kent downs are a good way to enjoy the area at any time of year. For those wishing to visit Kent the location is ideal - high in the centre of the Downs, close to the Weald, and central to all the main and historic towns.

My husband Graham and I are a friendly Anglo-French couple who live ‘next door’ - in the other wing of the house. We often work from home so will generally be around to greet people arriving, answer questions, resolve issues, or just provide advice if you plan one of the many local ‘pub walks’.
