Our sacred sanctuary is not a 5 star hotel, it is a real place, a working farm. The house is a working man's cottage of the 1940s. Please look elsewhere for a hotel or if you feel uncomfortable about staying in a home rather than a house. Dogs and children very welcome. Always willing to negotiate price with people from the city needing a real break.

Our sacred sanctuary is not a 5 star hotel, it is a real place, a working farm. The house is a working man's cottage of the 1940s. The old house has not moved a centimetre off its foundation. It is morticed hardwood with fibro cement. I love that heritage the shonky 70s renos do create light and space. The house location is one of the great locations in Kangaroo Valley above the fog and protected from the strong winds. Foundations of the pre-20th century house are in the immediate house grounds. The people who built that house probably camped on all the hills in all weather to find the best location. But the house is close to what would have been a permanent camp of Wadi Wadi people for thousands of years. Many Aboriginal friends and artists have stayed in the house over the years and feel this connection too. Please find look elsewhere for a hotel or if you feel uncomfortable about staying in a home rather than a house. Dogs and children very welcome.
My family and I have lived in this beautiful Upper River part of Kangaroo Valley. since 1996. We have had many international travellers working as woofers on our bio-dynamic organic farm. We regard them as our extended international family.
There is a shared bathroom and kitchen. The house is a 1940s/50s fibro shack which we have renovated there is a deck and a pool (made from a rain water tank) in summer. We have a rain-forest area adjoining the house and a macadamia nut plantation, along with citrus, apples, pear and lime trees. We also have about 100 Scottish Highland cattle, 1 horses (Banjo), 2 alpacas, a ram (Victa) and a ewe (Victoria) 2 lovely dogs Keela and Wawa.

The area:
There are some wonderful walks around our property and into the adjoining national park. You can walk for an hour or a couple of days depending on your fitness. There is a lovely walk up through wilderness area and then up to a road and onto the pub voted the best in NSW at Barrawang. A good reward after a 15 kilometre walk up the escarpment.

You really need a car in Kangaroo Valley. This will give you the freedom to explore the town and beyond to wonderful Jervis Bay, Berry on the coast and/or Bowral in the Southern Highlands the home of Donald Bradman, Mary Poppins and a cute place to visit.

The Kangaroo Valley pub is always good value and there are curios shops, a good restaurant Jing Jo's which needs bookings to confirm a spot.

Public Transport

Kangaroo Valley is not the greatest for public transport but there are two daily buses to the nearby towns of Bowral, Nowra and Moss Vale which links up with interstate and Sydney trains.

An unforgettable experience:

Our place is just one of the beautiful places in the world. We are very passionate about Aboriginal Australia and there are many places on our property where Aboriginal people have lived for thousands of years. If you are lucky you might share our house with some of our many Aboriginal visitors from the north, south, and west of Australia. We can also take you to see our wonderful healing tree, a unique and wonderous red cedar that is as old as modern European Australia.

The whole of Upper Kangaroo River area is a great place to ride your push bike. Mountain tracks go for miles. Peter's farm is an idyllic get away from the big city. A little out from the township allows for peace and quiet and a beautiful setting to kick back and relax. The house has a lot of character and the amenities were simple but sufficient. As Peter states, this is not a 5 star hotel but it has a lot of charm and places to explore. Would recommend if you want an authentic country getaway.

Peter's place is located in a beautiful setting! Despite being at the coldest time of the year, we were very warm staying here as Peter had lit a fire for us before we arrived. The house is big and the property is beautiful. The house is fairly old and it was a little dirty but it didn't bother us. Check in and out was really easy and Peter was super helpful but not intrusive. Thanks for a great stay!

We booked Peter's place very last minute to get out of Sydney. We arrived early afternoon which was a great time as there was plenty of light to see the countryside. Had dinner at the friendly inn. I recommend getting there early as the tables filled up fast. You can have dogs in the front courtyard with heaters or out the back. The room we were in was very well furnished with beautiful art. We had the whole place to ourselves and Peter was around if we needed him. Everything was great. It's not a hotel, if you are expecting that don't book peters place. Its the perfect place to switch off and listen to the birds and enjoy some quality time, read a book, eat cheese, listen to music and drink wine in front of the fire. There was a farmers market on the Sunday where we picked up some steak from Peters stall and some other fresh goodies to take home. Overall an excellent weekend.

Thanks to Peter for his warm welcome and open communication. The property is on a working farm as described, and Peter left us treats of fresh citrus to juice from the onsite orchard, and macadamia nuts. Our dog loved being able to roam on the farm with the other dogs, and our daughter enjoyed feeding the horse each day. We found it good value and appreciated being able to bring our large dog. Thanks Peter!

Peter is a very nice host and the cabin is in a beautiful spot with lots of nice, quiet walking around or close by and gorgeous views. Peter pointed out great places for walks and wildlife spotting in the nearby national park and on his large property amongst the friendly (but shy) highland cattle. Two very friendly dogs are part of the house and they know well not to come into the house. There was sufficient firewood to keep us warm and cosy in the evening. Oh, and the pies in the village should not be missed. We came at a time of the year when there were plenty of bushrats around, who unfortunately also made their way into the house including the kitchen where we found droppings in the morning and one of the bedrooms that had a strong smell of them in it. Peter told us after our visit that he would try to close off the very apparent holes and gaps that the rats were comingin through. The general cleanliness was also not great unfortunately with bedsheets not being fresh. Judging from previous reviews it seems that Peter takes criticism seriously and tries to rectify the issues that people raise, so hopefully this will improve

Joe's comments are fair enough. The beginning of winter is a tough time in the bush for marsupial mice and they love my macadamia trees. We've had some issues with roofing over the last very rainy period so there were a few extra gaps in the ceiling that I'm currently fixing. Most people use poison to control rodents on farms. I havent used any pesticides, pour ons, poisons of any kind since I bought the property in 1996 I practice bio-dynamic organic farming methods so everything including the rodents have their place and the rain forest and camelias surround the house so I guess these are the trade offs. So far as beds and sheets I would prefer guests bring their own but there is always fresh clean sheets available. I always make a big effort to clean the house before guests arrive either professionally or personally.

Peter's place is in an amazing location in the Kangaroo Valley. The surrounds are beautiful, and there is nothing like waking up to a misty morning. However, when we stayed, the house had a lot of character, but was suffering from a lack of maintenance and upkeep. The place was dusty, musty, and dark. The surrounding trees are beautiful, but keep the house cold and dark. This could have been easily remedied, but half the lights in the house did not work, and the fire heater had a broken glass front, which filled the house with smoke when the fire was being lit. There is no WiFi, contrary to the listing (Peter had cancelled the internet service due to frequent drop outs), and the pool was a vivid neon green. The bed in the main room was also broken and slanted when we stayed. There are also bush rats in the kitchen, so please keep everything sealed. We woke up to a scattering of bread and rat droppings on the kitchen table. Peter himself was very lovely, and told us a hidden spot to go see platypuses in the wild (a rare treat!). There was plenty of firewood for the fire, and the dogs were lovely, if a boisterous (WaWa). The dishwasher was also a bonus, as we were a group of 8. When going to Peter's place, don't expect luxurious accommodation, but a place to stay with basic amenities.

Im disappointed in Maria's response. She and her guests had the whole house to themselves for the Easter Weekend. We have had some severe storms over the past month so there are some maintenance issues that are being fixed. The wifi issue is just the normal problem people have with the skymuster nbn. It was not working, just like most of the internet in kangaroo valley has not been working for the past few weeks. There are many possums and marsupial mice that live in the surrounds and do come into the house if food is left out over night. Unfortunately the glass in the fire place was broken by the last people to use it last winter and I hadnt noticed. As to the broken bed thats news to me as it was slept on the night before Maria arrived. Anyway I think my place is for people who love the rustic not necessarily the mod cons of the city. The houses all around rent for exorbitant sums so I think it is value for money. Sometimes people's expectations are pretty hard to meet.

I am a retired Professor, Farmer, ex-political consultant and father of three fantastic boys who now have their own lives in Sydney and London. I run a biodynamic farm - basically the highest form of organic farming with Scottish Highland cattle, alpacas, one horse and one dog! I've worked at the highest levels of politics. Worked for the Labor Movement for many years and also in the USA and Europe as a political consultant. The name of my farm is Eramboo - which means tomorrow in the Guringai language. I am a passionate advocate for Aboriginal Australians and work as national secretary (voluntary) of the Indigenous Stock Exchange which has been raising start up capital for Aboriginal businesses since 2004. I have some great tips for travelling in the remote areas and meeting some wonderful Aboriginal guides. I need cash to supplement my farming income so welcome people into my four bedroom, rambling fibro house completely enclosed by rain forest. A car of some kind is probably needed in Kangaroo Valley. However there are beautiful beaches within a half an hours drive (Seven Mile Beach) and a bit further a field is the unforgettable Jervis Bay. There are wonderful bush walks all around our property as it borders onto a national park. You can walk for days without seeing another person. There is a great walk up to Burrawang Pub which will take about five hours. I have enjoyed the company of many (wwofers) willing workers on organic farms from Italy, France, Canada, Poland, England, the Netherlands, Japan, China and some even from Australia. Just about everyone who has worked on the farm has become part of the family and is linked up by as eramboo woofers. Beautiful fresh meat, macadamia nuts, green tea, vegetables from the garden is available in season at a reasonable price. Music is very important part of our lives. My three sons come home on holidays to work on the farm. Two live in Sydney and one in London.
