  • Karen was the perfect host, perfect wouldn't even describe how amazing our stay was at her hidden gem in the woods. I didn't want to write a review because I'd love to keep this place my own little secret getaway BUT its so beautiful more people need to escape to this place! The property is well kept and maintained. The HUT was a dream come true. We felt like we where home and it was so comfortable. Would definitely stay again and would highly recommend it.

  • What a beautiful, tranquil, comfortable getaway! Karen was an absolute gem of a host. You can feel her wholesome good nature, attention to detail, relaxed environment from start to finish. The cozy space was well equipped with everything one would need. From all your coffee fixings to towels, cooking options, the finest organic soaps etc. The unit was squeaky clean, private & relaxing. We didn't get to utilize the charming sauna but looking forward to that next visit. Karen advised us that bear river is about a mile away down the street from the property. This is a convenient fun activity for families, couples or singles. I can't say enough about Karen! She has a way of making you feel at home yet giving as much privacy as desired. At the same time she was there for our every question or need. 10 stars for the host and tranquil getaway.

  • The highlight of a vagabonding weekend through the foothills and high country of the Sierra Nevada! A place to fall in love with. In a twist of fortune we stumbled across the fairy tale abode of Karen and Jeremy's when deciding over dinner in Nevada City not to head back home down the hill but to try a last minute AirBnB search for a place to stay on the way to the high mountains. We arrived long after dark to a beautifully dark and silent place, with a few pathway lights twinkling their way through the seemingly enchanted forest. Karen and Jeremy made us feel home immediately. The studio was clean, beds comfy, bathroom and kitchen nicely appointed. We are outdoor people and enjoyed the option to sleep with screened windows and door wide open (we could have left them closed). In the morning we were treated to a wonderfully delicious breakfast. Our hosts made themselves available for engaging conversation and helped us pick a beautiful spot for a high country day hike.

  • Karen and Jordan have cultivated a gorgeous and relaxing place to rest and rejuvenate in a beautiful spot in the woods near the bear river! very grateful for their generous hospitality and for sharing their wonderful spirit that is rooted in connections with the earth

    Eri2017-09-25T00:00:00Z
  • So happy I was able to book this place and coordinate w/ Karen the same day that I needed it. Instead of getting a normal hotel, I surprised my boyfriend w/ a trip into the wooded foothills and it was 100% perfect for us. Karen and Jordan showed us how to access the Bear River for a quick walk and swim, then we had a wonderful private suite-- one of the best Airbnb's I've been in. Everything was clean, creative, and had a personal touch. Good energy on the property, we just wish we'd had time in the morning to walk around the garden and find the fresh drinking fountains. Thanks Karen and Jordan, keep doing what you're doing!

  • Pros: beautiful location in a quiet forest close to the Yuba, full amenities and comfortable beds, whimsical and hand-crafted decorations, kind and friendly hosts (who also know how to give you your space!), awesome electronic drum kit, extremely accommodating and response to requests, chill relaxed vibe, interesting conversation, amazing value at the price! Cons: NONE

Cozy cabin, conveniently located in mountain community of Colfax. 40 minutes from skiing (Lake Tahoe) & 2+ hrs from San Francisco. This adorable, rustic cabin sleeps 6 comfortably, has wood stove, washer/dryer, cable and all the amenities of home!!!
The large deck is additional outdoor living space with outside bar, table & chairs, umbrella, lights, gas bbq & ice cart. Very festive!!!
  • Dan's cabin was very clean and had everything that you would need for a nice stay. The beds were comfortable and the location was great for visiting family in the Colfax area. We would stay there again in the future.

  • Exactly what we wanted! Absolutely loved it!

  • This "cabin" is a great family resource (more of a house). We like to stay in Colfax when we are skiing at Sugar Bowl or Royal Gorge to make things flexible and cheaper than staying up at the slopes. We are glad to find another place where we can hang out. The house and services were great (wifi, tvs (2)). The house was quite comfortable for six of us (kids, parents, and grandparents). We would highly recommend the house as well as the hosts---who have been great and very helpful in all aspects.

  • Dan was terrific with communication. The cabin is warm, cozy, inviting and perfect for family trips. We would recommend this cabin in a heart beat. Thank you Dan for everything, It was exactly what we needed as a family. A place where we could all be together and enjoy the comfort of you place. Sincerely, Lawrence.

  • Very lovely little cabin. Clean comfortable and stocked with everything you need for cooking and grilling. Would definitely book again and would recommend.

    Kathy2017-07-02T00:00:00Z
  • The level of taste and thought that has gone into this cabin is like nothing I've ever seen. Cozy, and cute (but not kitsch), are both understatements! And I appreciated that we had real, comfortable furniture to use too (recliners abound!). Loved the string lights on the patio and the very nice grill. Everything we could possibly need was there and intuitively placed. Hosts were very accessible and accommodating. This is the best of Airbnb!

"The Call of the Hills" Historic Southern Pacific Railroad Company House nestled in the Sierra foothills of Northern Calif. Outside amenities include two covered porches, one over looking large yard with patio areas and views of downtown Colfax while the other looks into the quite neighborhood. The interior is full of vintage character and charm. With it's high ceilings, ornate trim and comfortable accommodations one is taken back to an earlier time. Come enjoy history, hiking and recreation.
Beautiful old family home located in downtown Colfax. Two separate bedrooms with queen size beds. Also have a queen size Aero bed available for extra guests.
House is walking distance to downtown Colfax.
  • We loved this place! The only thing missing was Grama standing at the kitchen stove! Steeped in history, but with cozy modern comforts, this early Colfax railway house was the perfect home base for a weekend of playing in Grass Valley and Nevada City – by day hiking early miner trails, touring Empire Mine, swimming in Scott’s Flat Lake, and by night slurping root beer floats at the A-1 drive-in, seeing movies at the old Del Oro, and a live performance of ‘Chicago’ at the historic Nevada Theatre. The sweet gold-mine-of-a-house at 100 Forest Hill and Depot Street is roomy enough for three adults – with its enormous kitchen, meandering living room, furnished porches, two beautiful bedrooms and baths – all charmingly decorated in soft retro colors and fabrics, with antique elements throughout. And mercy me, the treats! Our host left us well provisioned. After one especially warm day, I had an irresistible urge for a popcicle and was ecstatic to find a whole box of orange creamcicles in the freezer. She knows her hospitality, Mary does! Before arriving I asked her if she had any information on Colfax history, so she checked out books for me from the library! It was fun imagining the original residents sitting on the porch overlooking the town, as 3000 people cheered and threw their hats in the air when President Theodore Roosevelt arrived by train directly below the house. Thank you, Mary, for throwing your hat in the air for us and making our visit so perfect. We all agreed this is one rail stop we would stop at again.

  • We had a great time during our stay at Mary's place. She is a wonderful hostess with attention to detail. It really made us feel at home ! The place is beautiful , especially the beautiful backyard. The house has a charming feel to it. Huge kitchen makes it a plus(for those like me who love to cook ) with all utensils that one might ever need . There was an air conditioning unit provided in the living room area which made our stay very comfortable. Lots of books to keep you engaged ! A couple of games too .We enjoyed every bit of our stay & would surely visit whenever around the area for our next outing .

  • My husband, mom and three grandkids enjoyed our stay at Mary's home. We have never been to this part of town and were very fortunate to be able to be a part of this community for the weekend. Mary's home was quaint and inviting. This nicely maintained property is the perfect place to get away from the city and relax with kind people. We have adapted to Airbnb travel in the past. So, we are not very needy. But, Mary provided many nice snacks which the kids definitely appreciated and she made herself accessible if we needed her. A menu and the town information was left for our perusal and was very helpful. Mary directed us to a few places where we were able to enjoy the lake. Everything we needed was available for us and even some things we forgot. The beds were very comfortable and my husband enjoyed studying in the reading nook. Although, the market is very close and the kids enjoyed walking into town to get ice cream. We all enjoyed relaxing in her back yard as the kids explored safely around the yard searching for sticks and insects. Mary's place accommodated my family very well.

Thank you Richard & Stephanie
  • Yes! You want to stay here! I wanted to give my husband a romantic getaway for his birthday, and this was perfect. I'm also thinking this will be the perfect place for my next girls trip too :). Richard and Stephanie's yurt is amazing, so unique and so fun. They are also the best hosts. They offered lovely company and privacy all at the same time. Stephanie made our arrival extra special with from scratch, Julia Childs cream puffs waiting for us. Also, I'm full from dinner as I write this, but I definitely still have room for the gourmet breakfasts Richard made for us :). Finally, we bought couples massages from Stephanie, which was a perfect compliment to the weekend. The setup they have with the adjacent bathroom and kitchen left us wanting for nothing amenity-wise. The price was great, we saved money over other more traditional bread and breakfasts in the area, and I feel like we received much more value than we would have elsewhere. Thank you Richard and Stephanie!

    Chista & Mitch2014-06-09T00:00:00Z
  • Richard and Stephanie went above and beyond to make our stay with them very special. They knew we were celebrating a birthday, so we were greeted with champagne and chocolate-dipped strawberries upon arrival. My partner and I enjoyed lounging by the pool, cooking dinner in the kitchenette, and watching the stars from the hot tub. We also got a couples massage, which was fantastic! The yurt was incredibly comfortable -- I slept 10 hours! -- and our breakfast the next day was out of this world. Couldn't have asked for anything more -- except maybe an extra day's stay :)

    Kelly2015-05-31T00:00:00Z
  • If I could rate this stay higher than 5 stars, I would! Our stay was a fantastic escape weekend in a most unique place. The beautiful and colorful yurt is very large inside (500+ sf), with 2 comfortable beds, table and chairs, dressers, TV with DVD/VCR, and a lovely fireplace with 2 plush chairs in front. For tall people, the footboard on the bed may make it feel a bit on the short side. A helpful binder of local attractions/activities, DVDs and videos, and many books were available for use. There are both screen and solid doors on the 2 entryways and there is a nice private deck out one door. Though you have to go outside to get to the very clean "bathroom" and separate shower room, they are only down a few well lighted steps on a hidden walkway. No problem at all. Robes and slippers are provided. Though we didn't use them, a full kitchen in a nicely appointed travel trailer located on the gravel driveway (out of sight up a lighted tree-lined trail) and a large BBQ are available for use. No car is needed for this escape, as an Amtrak station is nearby. Yes, the train whistles can be heard, but are not too bothersome. The entire setting is like having a gated resort all to your self. Yes, there is a gate. We were welcomed with a plate of fruit and a chilled bottle of cider. The pool, pool lounge chairs, secluded outdoor jacuzzi with nearby outdoor shower room, giant outdoor chess board, lighted pathways were all surrounded by trees, many birds, a few frogs in the bushes, and, at night, endless stars in the dark sky. Our hosts, Richard and Stephanie, surpassed the meaning of the words friendly and helpful. They live in a house up a slight hill, separated from the yurt by the privacy fenced pool. They are always accessible, but never hover. They met us upon our rather late arrival, showed us around, and made us feel welcome and comfortable. If you like dogs, they have 2 very clean and sweet ones to pet; if you don't, you'll never see or hear them as they stay up in the house. Richard contacted us before we arrived to ask if we had food preferences or allergies and then they prepared two outstanding and very substantial breakfasts for us. It was like we had our own fantastic chefs who brought our food to us as we sat under an umbrella by the pool. I cannot say enough positive about our stay.

    D.B.2013-11-04T00:00:00Z
  • It's impossible to describe the wonderfulness of Stephanie and Richard's home in a mere 500 words, so I'll stick to the highlights. My friends and I went to Tahoe (about an hour and a half away) for the day and decided to splurge and spend the night in this fabulously decorated yurt to recuperate from a long day hiking in the snow. Even though it was winter, and not the warmest, we took advantage of the sweet jacuzzi, which I sincerely recommend. No one suffered from the cold during the night, in fact everyone was very warm, even though it dipped into the low 30s. Richard and Stephanie are the perfect hosts. I'm still drooling over the homemade creme puffs and breakfast, not to mention the champaign they provided upon our arrival. Though I am a seasoned backpacker, my friends have never been particularly interested in camping, and I am beyond glad that everyone not only enjoyed the "yurt glamping" experience, but also would love to come back some time in the summer. Everyone wished we could have stayed longer than one night. Stephanie and Richard provided the perfect friend reunion weekend, and I can't wait to return!

    Margo2014-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • Richard and Stephanie were incredible hosts, and the yurt (and the amazing surrounding grounds) is a magical place! My girlfriend and I had been planning on spending a day on the Yuba River, but decided to just stay and enjoy the splendor of the property. The yurt itself is pretty wondrous, with great decoration and a warm/cozy feel. Be prepared for a seriously gourmet homemade breakfast, too! While Richard and Stephanie gave us plenty of privacy, they also clearly enjoy being great hosts and are happy to help out in any way they can. In this sense, it feels a bit more lik(URL HIDDEN)than other AirBNB places we've stayed. We can't wait to return, and will definitely suggest the place to our friends!

    Andrew2014-06-20T00:00:00Z
  • Our brief stay at Richard & Stephanie's yurt palace was more than we could have hoped for. The place itself was exquisite -- everywhere we looked was a thoughtful detail, be it twinkling lights illuminating the trees or comfortable slippers to enjoy during the stay. The yurt was cozy and luxurious and like nothing we'd ever seen before; we felt like we were in a dreamland. Richard & Stephanie were the most generous hosts, providing us with delicious (and giant) breakfasts and champagne. We loved the hot tub and the outdoor kitchen... We miss the yurt!!! Definitely, definitely recommend.

    Priscilla2014-11-09T00:00:00Z
  • The yurt is an amazing getaway and experience. Everything is very clean and well kept up with tons of decoration and lights. The bathroom and kitchen are also very clean and well stocked. I could not thank Richard and Stephanie enough for their kindness and hospitality. They made sure we did not have any issues during our stay and gave us our privacy. Definitely recommend to everyone to experience the yurt and will be visiting again during the spring.

    Steven2016-11-20T00:00:00Z
  • Richard and Stephanie's place was perfection. We were so well fed, and every possible need was anticipated. They were so sweet and accommodating without being too much, and are such interesting, easygoing folks! The hot tub, sauna, magical lighting, woods, stars and sweet doggies, oh my! Amazing. Finally- the yurt was so cozy and comfortable and special, we felt like we had stepped into a fairy tale. There was more to do than we even had time for as far as exploring the cute town and countryside and river. We will definitely be back, already planning our next trip!

The guest cottage at Stone's Throw Farm is a perfect place to relax and recharge in the country or to use as a base camp for your all-season adventures in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Well-placed access point to river country, hiking, biking, and South Lake Tahoe resorts. This charming bungalow offers a vaulted ceiling, privacy, and a full kitchen: great for short or longer term stays. Guests are invited to learn more about the surrounding organic farm, and even participate if they want!
Set on a working organic vegetable farm, this private cottage is a wonderful retreat from the city, just 2.5 hours from San Francisco and 45 min from Sacramento. It's perfect for 2 people, and can hold one more adult or child with the sofa bed. Historic downtown Colfax (served daily by Amtrak's California Zephyr train) is just minutes away by car or foot, and the cultural riches of both Grass Valley and Nevada City are just 30 minutes down the road. Rivers, mountains, hiking trails, and ski resorts are all located nearby and we're happy to make recommendations!
Colfax is a charming railroad/gold rush town just off of highway 80. It has a full sized grocery store and a Starbuck's, but also boasts top notch eating spots, antique stores, and a new independent music/art venue. Try Café Luna for delicious burgers and Mexican cuisine. Wood-fired pizza is definitely worth the stop at Pizzaiolo. The Colfax Theater (URL HIDDEN) just reopened and plans a full roster of music, dance, and performance. Hiking and swimming at the American river is just a short drive down into the canyon, and the majestic Yuba river is only 45 min from here. We can help direct you to our favorite hiking trails and other cool sites in the area.
  • Sweet and cozy cottage in a beautiful secluded country farm. The hosts have been really kind and helpful during our stay - we wish we had the chance to stay longer! Thank you!

  • We had a wonderful and relaxing 5-night stay at the cabin (me, my husband and our dog). The cabin was spacious and as advertised and had everything we needed. The A/C worked very well, which was much appreciated in the heat. No issues with internet. We kept our dog on a leash within the deer fence of the farm, and walked her off leash outside of the fence. Relaxing morning coffee and evening beer sitting in front of the cabin. Yummy vegetables grown on the farm. Good brunch at Luna Cafe in Colfax, nice day trip to Nevada City. But the best thing were hikes in the area to warm mountain rivers that we swam in. Refreshing, relaxing, beautiful!

  • We really enjoyed our night at the cottage. It definitely was peaceful and relaxing. It is very nice inside. We also really enjoyed sitting outside on the porch with all the huge trees in view. We took a nice walk into the cute town of Colfax, too. We would definitely recommend staying here!

  • We had some business about 50 mins away from this cottage. We chose this place because of the beauty and nature that surrounds the whole place. It's a very peaceful atmosphere with hiking and biking trails nearby. We took advantage of the delicious local cafe Luna recommended by our hosts. (Twice, hah) The cottage itself was clean and comfortable with extra pillows and bedding. The bathroom and shower were clean and comfortable and I loved the rose smelling handsoap, it reminded me of nature. It's spacious inside and out and was perfect for us and our dog. She loved the hikes and walks around the farm. And the ticks on the hikes loved her, but we decided not to bring them home with us. The chocolates they left for us were sweet and Tim and Steven were very welcoming and friendly. We would love to come back someday.

  • If you're looking for an escape from the city or just need a place to unwind and enjoy the serenity of nature, this is your place! The cottage is charming, the crops are abundant, the trees are stunning and the Northern California sunshine rejuvenates the soul. Everyone on the property that we met, was delightful and offered some helpful tips on hikes, places to eat etc. A highlight was enjoying our morning coffee on the patio of the cottage while listening to the rooster in the distance. We very much enjoyed bringing our dog too! I highly recommend staying here-we plan to be back many times in the future :)

Are you coming from the Bay Area on your way to Lake Tahoe, Reno or the Sierra Nevada Mountains? Leave the evening before and spend the night in Colfax. Next morning you will have only a short distance to go to get to your destination. Colfax is located on Interstate 80, halfway between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. Colfax is also close to Grass Valley and Nevada City. Better yet, my house is within easy walking distance from the Amtrak rail road station.
The cozy downstairs bedroom and the spacious bathroom with shower are totally separated from the rest of the house and accessible from the outside with a numbered lock, allowing you to come and go as you please. The queen-size bed has really soft, 100 percent natural cotton sheets and there is a big stack of fluffy towels in the bathroom waiting to spoil you. The deck right outside the bedroom is very private and yours to enjoy during the warmer months of the year. You are welcome to roam in the garden. There are many places to sit and enjoy nature or to contemplate life.
Colfax is a quaint small town in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. There are a couple of good restaurants in town, but only a few are open on weekends. My house is on a very quiet cul de sac set in a beautiful garden setting.
  • I had a wonderful time at Ingrid's place. I loved the bed and the heated mattress pad and the view from the bedroom and bathroom windows. In the morning I opted to pay her a little for breakfast and she made the most delicious German apple pancakes. I enjoyed getting to know Ingrid and her place so much that I stayed again on my way back from Portland a week later!

  • Ingrid provided a wonderful space for me on my way to Tahoe. It was very clean and decorated very nicely, I highly recommend this Airbnb.

  • Ingrid was amazing. The house is very clean and accommodating. We arrived super late and she was great about it. She also made breakfast in the morning and is a lovely host. Will be back soon for another ski trip.

  • Ingrid is a gracious, thoughtful host. She kindly picked me up at the train station, which is also close by in case you decide to walk from the station to her home. The room is well appointed and very comfortable with a little fridge and electric kettle, a sense of privacy is reinforced by the surrounding gardens and oak trees. Ingrid is well informed about area history and is a veteran hiker, feel free to ask her for recommendations for hikes close by and further afield. She cooked some lovely meals for me and accommodated my gluten and dairy sensitivities. I enjoyed my time in Colfax immensely, it was a rejuvenating restful two day visit! Highly recommend a stay at Ingrid's home.

  • Ingrid's place was absolutely lovely! It is a beautiful room with a wonderful view! The property is amazing and full of plants. Ingrid couldn't have been more kind and helpful. She made it easy to check in and even watched my dog while we went exploring the shops near by. I would recommend this place to anyone who is considering staying in Colfax. I am looking forward to having the opportunity to stay there again!

  • We just enjoyed a wonderful evening with Ingrid! She had a lovely plate of snacks waiting for us when we arrived, and the room was warm and welcoming! We had a private entrance if we wished, but we preferred to spend the evening with Ingrid! The bed was fabulous, with a heated mattress pad! And no need to bring your own pillows, they were perfect too! She left us dried fruit by our bed, and there was water, coffee, or tea to be made. A very spacious bathroom and plenty of linens. Ingrid offered to fix us breakfast and was happy to rise early to make sure that we were taken care of before we had to leave for the competition we were attending. She is a gem and we look forward to returning in the spring.

  • Incredible host who is a master gardener and talented artist and cook! Ingrid's comfy place is perfect for that weekend getaway you always promised yourself - private and peaceful yet only two blocks from Colfax's historic Main Street - antique shops, a nice pub and a cafe with yummy food plus an ice-cream and yogurt shop. This is an absolute gem of a place with a marvelous host. Thank you, Ingrid!

  • The place is great! You will never get bored. The owner is super kind, accommodating and friendly. Tons of room but need a bigger size of bed. Most of the beds are twin size, not comfortable for couples, just right for kids. Otherwise, it's excellent for bigger families and groups. FOR SURE WE WILL COME BACK TO THIS PLACE! Everyone loved it!!!!!

    Noraida2016-07-11T00:00:00Z
  • My family loved this place! It is so large, that for once we didn't feel crowded during the family reunion. The kids had so many fun things to do in the house and the adults too! Very close to a beautiful lake and a small downtown area. We will be back again for sure next year!

  • Donna's place was a great place for large groups. There are a lot of rooms for people to stay in and all the rooms were very comfortable. The house is very clean when you go inside and there are many activities to keep everyone occupied during the stay. The kitchen is very large and great for prepping for a group of 40 people. The communication between Donna and I before and during the stay was very good and she has very quick responses. Overall, it was a great stay and everyone enjoyed themselves.

    Stephanie2017-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • This home is an amazing spot to train or regroup! We fully immersed our west coast leadership in a 4-day training in a unique and outside the box environment. What the retreat center allowed us to deliver was a comprehensive, team energizing and rewarding team experience. Donna was communicative and guided us in early on. Once we were on site the care taker Sallie was more than helpful, took good care of us and she went way beyond anyone’s normal expectations. We experienced a challenge having our equipment picked up and Sallie stepped in to help solve it and then she helped me load 3 huge cases of equipment into a truck. This is a special place and my team and I will be back!

    Julie2016-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • It is an excellent property for family reunions for which we were there. The place is well stocked. There is a lot of entertainment equipment. The owner was very responsive to the need of the guests. We would definitely consider it for another family reunion.

    Harpinder2016-08-01T00:00:00Z
  • Donna was super communicative right off the bat and never stopped being helpful and available. The house was an amazing space. SO big and so many cool things to do. The kitchen was plenty big enough to cook food for our whole group and we had movies playing in the theater the whole time. All in all, this was a great trip (especially for the cost) and we'll definitely consider coming back in future years.

    Elijah2016-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • The house was fantastic! As great as we could have asked for and able to accommodate all our needs. Donna and crew were communicative and helpful and everything went very smoothly. The house delivers on everything!

    Landon2016-11-13T00:00:00Z
  • Donna's place is the best of both worlds - family home warmth and big place with facilities that a more traditional 'center,' run by a business would provide. It's in a beautiful setting on a large piece of property with enough room for people to go sit and gaze at the views alone or talk quietly with another person or throw a frisbee or ball. There is a hot tub that's big enough for 6 and a sauna. Both appear to be new and working very well. There are lots of pots and pans and utensils. There is a game room, a fire pit, a gazebo. I mean, really.... There's everything!!! It's close by Colfax. I went to Sierra Market every day (< 2 miles) and was pleasantly surprised to find everything I needed for the group of Bay Area folks I was up there with. Donna's description covers all this. I just needed to say it because it is all quite wonderful. I would like to emphasize how homey this place feels. There are family pictures and signs and affirmations of love. Donna was super responsive and helpful whenever I texted or called for the entire week, which was during her holidays. Don't hesitate. You will be very happy here. Thanks Donna.

Our Colfax 1600' sq. cabin is a rustic slice of heaven on 3.8 acres. Watch turkeys and deer meander by from our brand new huge deck! We only accept non nicotine users. No smoking OR vaping! NO EXCEPTIONS! (Please dont ask!) We can sleep 4 easily, and 7 if we must! The house IS still a work in progress (needing some new baseboards and paint) but we have brand new FLOORS throughout! Snow skiing, and all water sports are nearby! During all the HWY 80 road closures WE are always accessible!
This is a RUSTIC style 1600 square foot cabin, about 5-7 minutes from highway 80, where you can spend quality time with your family and friends. Our remote location is by design. (We only accept non nicotine users. Please acknowledge this in your inquiry! No smoking OR vaping!) We have done everything we can to represent this property accurately. If you read the WHOLE listing, it should give you a clear picture. Our two plus bedroom home, is on 3.76 oak covered acres, 1/4 mile off the main road! Both the house and the garden are always improving! (right now we are focused on the garden!) Jamie is obsessed with the gardens! Inside, we have a moderately open floor plan and a relaxed rustic country feel. Our reviews reflect the way the house WAS, not the way it IS as of MARCH 2017! Basic use by 2: includes the GUEST bedroom ONLY and the rest of the whole house except the porch. Basic use by 3 or 4. There is a Master bedroom, which is made availabe to groups of this size, but the enclosed porch is still our domain. Basic use by 5: Please use the couch in the library for an extra bed, but there is no dresser available in that room. Enclosed porch still not included. Use by 6 or 7: We open enclosed porch which can also sleep two. A large arch opens from the great room, to what is legally but not practically, a third bedroom. We use it as a library instead. We have a variety of games, books, movies and music, to foster a relaxing atmosphere. We have wifi and chromecast. We personally use a TV subscription that travels with us, so you may not have TV unless you do too. Our cabin is simply and comfortably furnished. We just recently added a new love seat and couch combination. The library has a couch as well. If an extra bed is needed, use THE LIBRARY COUCH (but please make up with sheets from the hall closet!) The living room couches are not very good for sleeping on at all, and we ask that they are NOT used for this purpose. The rugs throughout the home are a variety of genuine Persian, contemporary, machine-made but Persian style, and fur (why we can't have animals). The floors were installed in FEB 2017. The porch was built in FEB 2017. We did a complete REHAB, not a remodel, so there has been a lot of work that you won't be able to see, but the house is now in perfect structural condition. The enclosed porch, our Winter Garden, is usable as a sleeping area, on for large parties. There are two twin beds on the porch, a day bed and a trundle underneath. Both have memory foam pads over mattresses. There is neither heat nor a/c on the enclosed porch but leaving the french doors open keeps the room quite comfortable. There really is nowhere to store clothes though, it's just a sleeping area. Sharing OUR Master bedroom, if you have 2 in your group who prefer not to sleep together is available upon request, with advance planning and ADDITIONAL COST. We do NOT offer the closet and we keep it locked with a key lock to avoid confusion. Cook in the large full kitchen (with a gas range including oven), if you prefer to eat in. Basic spices and many kitchen supplies are available to you. Please do not eat food from our freezer or consume our alcohol. If you see a product is almost gone, please inform us, or replace it. There is nothing like having a meal planned and finding someone used up all of a needed ingredient we no longer have due to guest use. Barbecue on our charcoal grill, rather than gas, - it creates juicier, more flavorful food than the gas grill we have at our other home. It only takes a very few minutes to fire it up with our coal tower, (no chemicals needed!) and we have plenty of mesquite charcoal available for your use, plus pitched kindling to start it with. It is NOT a wood burning fire pit though, as you will see in the pictures. DO NOT ADD WOOD to the already burning briquettes. We stay in our "Cottage", a secondary building, if our presence overlaps with yours. If you wish, Jerry might include you in whatever meals we have, but do plan to provide and prepare your own food. (Jerry is a fab cook!!!) If Jerry cooks for you, it will be done in the main house. The Cottage kitchen is not really adequate for family style meals. Dine either in the separate dining room or large kitchen nook. We have seating for up to ten, but we would never rent to that large a group with only one bathroom. Wood is our primary heat source during the winter. A wood burning stove is located in the great room, providing cozy and romantic winter warmth. It is also very dangerous to touch when it is being used so we do not allow its use with children under 10 present. Jamie just tripped and burned both hands on it for the first time. It was not fun. There is furnace heat as well for families with young children. We have great air conditioning for the summer months. However, we feel safe opening the windows at night and getting fresh air during the summer months, and seldom run the a/c ourselves. We hope you will prefer to cool the house at night and save the environment. There are EIGHT Gardens, with an extraordinarily long growing season, which we are working to restore to their former glory (after being a rental for a few years) which surround us on three sides, as well as above the house on the eastern hill and behind the back yard. The deck is on two sides of the western side of the house. The back yard is just getting started on being rehabbed. The side yard will not be rehabbed this year. It is still under duress. We have a hot tub, which is awesome and is located off the library. It is NOT GUARANTEED as part of the amenities. Consider it a bonus. We don't charge extra for it, but neither do we promise it is available. Gentle slopes allow for easy walking around the yard and grounds. Our chicken coop stands empty, an enclosed vegetable garden and green house, will over time bring our home back to its original glory. There are berries and grapes growing wild. Help yourself! Chains are almost never required, yet we are close to serious snow in the winter, where they will be. We do get a few dustings of our own snow at the ranch, which we call "postcard snow". During all of the road closures of highway 80 this winter we have remained open. The main road where we have our address leads right to the Bear River! Our driveway, (a quarter mile long!) comes off the main road and passes three other houses. *the bison was humanely put down by a family member and all of the meat consumed, by our extended family.
COLFAX is a town of great significance, in the very important Californian "Gold Country" of the Sierra Foothills. Colfax is roughly equidistant between Sacramento and Truckee (40 to 60 minutes). We are about 25 minutes from Grass Valley and Nevada City via 174 and about 20 minutes or 15 miles above Auburn, to Rollins Lake or the American River. Each of the towns mentioned has a great deal of their own history. OUT AND ABOUT: PANNING FOR GOLD: Bear River is right down the road from our home, just a few miles outside of Colfax. Bear River is famous as a still productive location for the hand panning of gold! All you need is a gold pan, something to sit on, and a container in which to store your collected gold! When you get tired or hot you can just swim or tube in the icy waters to cool off! RAFTING: The American River is across Highway 80 to the east and has great water activities. "The Colfax-Iowa Hill Bridge to Ponderosa Way Bridge run is the most popular section to run and has been a favorite for California rafters and kayakers since the mid seventies. This 9.5 mile run contains many steep drops and boulder slaloms, providing some of the best whitewater rafting of the 3 forks of the American river." Excerpt from the "North Fork" tab of the American River rafting website. KAYAKING: Either river, or lake, will provide hours of sun and fun. SKIING: is world class. Closest is Sugar Bowl, with Boreal nearby. Northstar, Squaw, Alpine Meadows, and Incline, are all within about an hour. Boreal and Incline are best for less experienced skiers. Northstar is great for the average to well above average skier (free lessons for level 6+). Serious double black skiers will skip them and go to Squaw, Alpine or Sugar Bowl. FISHING: Rollins Lake is the Bear River's premier rainbow and brown fishery, according to the AppealDemocrat, and fishing can vary dramatically according to the season. Stampede/Bocca Reservoir (farther up the highway, just past Truckee) is one of the leading kokanee salmon fishing lakes in the West. Anglers will also find plenty of brown, mackinaw, and rainbow trout. Fly fishing is popular at the lake, according to CaliforniaGreatLakes. CELEBRATING: Downtown Colfax offers old town celebrations and a family feeling you don't get in larger communities. We are home to the Fire and Iron Festival, (with a little burner feel) and a fabulous July 3rd Celebration among many others! ARTS: The Colfax Theater is state of the art both in projection and sound. They will be hosting movies, live theater as well as musicians, plus they boast the largest dance floor in northern California. EATERIES: The food is great at most every spot we have tried. Sandwiches from the grocery store are FANTASTIC. The pizza by the market in town is among the best we have ever had in the traditional style. Pizzaiolo is fantastic for a lighter oven fired style. You will love Dine and Dash, but you will stay to relax! We just got a Beach Hut Deli. SHOPPING: Quaint stores dot the main street in town, with locally produced gifts and art. Grass Valley and Nevada City have awesome shopping as well, if you like to spend your days poking around historic towns (we do!) Auburn is about 20 minutes away, with a greater variety of businesses, and services along with a historical downtown area. HIKING: According to MVTrails, "The Stevens Trail is one of the most scenic and accessible trails in our area. Originally built as a toll road for pack mules between Colfax and the gold fields of Iowa Hill, it slopes gently downhill for about 3.6 miles to the confluence of Secret Ravine and the North Fork of the American River. It offers breathtaking views of this designated "Wild and Scenic" section of the river canyon." TRAIN: There are trains in and out of Colfax, and Jamie just took her first trip. Great for a day trip! Food and alcohol on board! You can go either towards Oakland or Reno. ACTIVITIES IN and ON the PROPERTY: GAMES: There are games, and playing cards, plus a new sound system for your rented movies and TV series. We have about 30 movies. Streaming movies is possible but we don't do it ourselves. WALK: Our oak covered hills take a while to walk, featuring deer, turkey, and fox, cutting through the property. RELAX as you sip your coffee in the early morning or enjoy a glass of wine on the deck in the evening. barely seeing evidence the nearest neighbor in any direction! Keep an eye out for those deer and other wildlife! We have rarely seen skunk and racoon, but they are there. BIRDWATCH: SierraFoothillsAudubon lists dozens of birds that you can watch from our deck, or while hiking. WILD FRUIT PICKING: Blackberries abound in the summer and you can pick them to your hearts content. Same with with wild cherries, if you can beat the birds to them! There are wild grapes, if you are ambitious and blueberries if you are fast! WE have wifi, but if you need to print, the library offers printing for 15 cents a page.
  • Jamie is a very gracious host, her house is beautiful and ideally located near Bear River. We had a fantastic time enjoying the foothills, riding, hiking and swimming in nearby Rollins lake. We're already planning our next visit! Thanks again to Jamie for a great weekend.

    Fabrice2015-07-20T00:00:00Z
  • Jamie and Jerry came by on the last day of our stay. They are great people and our only regret is we didn't have more time to socialize with them. Jerry knew the area and shared some interesting tidbits that made it fun. The pictures represent the house perfectly. It was great for our party of 5. There was plenty of room for our movie screen and projector set up. We were all impressed at the cleanliness of the house and the peace and quiet at night. Good location with easy access to Bear River and Rollins lake (short drive). Wonderful family get away.

    Louis2014-06-23T00:00:00Z
  • It was definitely a fun getaway. The whole goal was to eat, drink, and be merry. We had plans to go to check out the local, go hiking, and stuff, but that didn’t happen. We found ourselves just letting everything go! The fireplace was so awesome, it made the whole place cozy! Monday, we decided to stay in. We played board games that we brought, there were some there that we played! It was really relaxing. We watched a couple redboxes. Nothing beats just chilling hard! Sunday night, we cooked dinner. Pretty much wine and dined. My friend Noah is a chef. He cooked a lot and all the kitchen gadgets are there! My friend was on a wheelchair the entire weekend; she said the space in the cabin was perfect. It wasn’t small or anything. Only thing is to get on and off the deck. It was my goal for all of us to disconnect from reality, but my friend had a laptop and she used WIFI to get some of her work-related stuff done. Not only I’d recommend it to friends, family, but I’m thinking of renting the entire week in a couple of months so I can go snowboarding with friends!

    Christopher2014-11-25T00:00:00Z
  • This house was exactly as it said it was. A lovely place in a rural area. My boyfriend and I felt very comfortable renting the house, because the host would answer our questions so promptly if we had them. I would recommend this house to anyone!

    Cassandra2016-01-14T00:00:00Z
  • Jamie was great and super informative. The cabin is nestled in a beautiful u-shaped garden in the foothills. Everyone in downtown Colfax is so sweet and ready to talk about all the history of the area. The cabin is prestine-- super clean and comfy. We utilized the stocked kitchen and hot tub Each night of our stay! I would definitely recommend staying here if you find yourself explorint the California Goldmining foothills.

  • We had a lovely time. It was a pleasant house with beautiful flowers.

    Alice2015-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • Jamie was very descriptive in her communications and house manual, we didn't have any questions when we arrived. The house was lovely, quiet, and had everything we needed neatly laid out and accessible. The grounds and surrounding wilderness are beautiful. It was a great, relaxing retreat.

    Stephen2015-06-01T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great place! We love hiking down to rivers and had our choice of numerous spectacular hikes within half an hour. Steven's Trail was our favorite. The house is very comfy and clean, the kitchen well stocked, the hosts generous and attentive if anything was needed. The back deck is serene for morning coffee or evening serenade and cocktails, we had a great romantic getaway. Would be comfortable for a family of 4 as well. Hats off to Jamie and Jerry for creating a warm, welcoming and relaxing vacation house.

Clean and cozy 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom guest house (750 square feet) on our 3 acre parcel. There is a queen bed and an air mattress. Complete kitchen, coffeemaker, toaster, washer dryer, with central heat and air conditioning. There is a large TV and nice DVD movie selection. The bathroom has a shower/tub combo. The full kitchen is stocked with dishes, cutlery, and cookware. Easy access to Hwy. 80 for side trips to Truckee and Lake Tahoe. Grass Valley and Nevada City are approximately 15-20 minutes away. Colfax is 8 minutes away.
A beautiful quiet rural neighborhood surrounded by black oak and ponderosa pine trees. Lots of wildlife, including mule deer, wild turkey, fox, and raccoon. The surrounding region is known historically for its fruit orchards. Check out Bierwagen's Happy Apple Kitchen for lunch/pie and to purchase local produce.
  • Kathryn's place is a great place to stay if you are visiting Nevada City and Grass Valley. Twenty minutes by car to either destination, you will soon be in the middle of the action. Her three acres is quiet and beautiful. The apartment is one bedroom with kitchen and bath, and has a separate entrance. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking with pots and pans, dishes and utensils. Our conversations with Kathryn were always pleasant. She was more than willing to share ideas about what to do in the area. We would definitely return here. While staying here we saw little tiny frogs, tiger lilies, bigger frogs and hawks.

  • Really cute spot. Definitely remote and beautiful. Everything you need is provided and Kathryn responded quickly to questions we had. Nice weekend getaway.

  • This place was a perfect stop for us along the road. Easy access from Hwy 80 and not too far from Grass Valley & Nevada City. The hosts were friendly and the place was well stocked.

  • Kathryn's in-law unit was great! It is on the side of the detached garage opposite the main house. This was our first Airbnb and we were so happy with our choice. The fridge and cupboards were stocked with thoughtful food choices that we totally were not expecting! Hot cocoa that our son loved, coffee (we brought our own since we didn't know, but awesome!), half and half, even eggs and toast and a few apples! The unit was nicely appointed and clean, bathroom has obviously been remodeled recently and looked very nice and we enjoyed nice warm showers with great water pressure. Our 5 year old son used the blow up mattress which was a hit. We didn't have time to watch any TV but Kathryn had some cool DVD's. We did have time to play a couple board games that she had on the bookshelf, which our son thought was very cool. Overall we had a great stay and will be back again in the future!

    David2017-10-01T00:00:00Z

    Sierra Nevada Foothills Getaway
    12 değerlendirme
Unwind from the grind! Our peaceful 1.6 acre property is in the beautiful Sierra Foothills, a mile from the Bear River, and a 5 minute drive from Colfax and I-80. The Hut is a 400 square foot guest cottage up the hill from the main house. We believe less is more, and smaller scale living feeds the heart and soul. Life of all kinds abounds here. The black oaks, firs, and pines provide the canopy for fruit trees, plant foods, and herbs. Come escape to the woods...
The hut has a sleeping loft that is not full height. Climbing a very sturdy ladder is required. The full size pullout sofa downstairs is the other sleeping option. There is electricity, with everything operating on a small scale. Come here expecting simplified living. Complimentary coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and oatmeal is provided. Breakfast in the main house is available on occasion - feel free to inquire!
Residential estate properties with acreage. Several have farm animals.
  • Karen's home is so beautiful! Such a peaceful location, great place to get away. 10/10 recommend!

  • Nice location, close to the HW 80 while quiet. Even closer to a beach at Bear creek with swimming, fishing, gold mining, etc. Real deep forest feeling, beautiful view to the forest and night sky. Serenity with healthy and nourishing breakfast. Kitchenette is well equipped, though understandably small.

  • Staying at The Hut was such a wonderful experience. We booked it last minute to find a quick escape from San Francisco on a busy festival weekend, and it turned out to be a really lucky decision! Karen (and Pilot!) gave us a warm welcome and was able to recommend activities in the nearby area. We discovered the amazing Bear River, and Karen was able to help out by kindly loaning flip flops and shorts so that we could get the most of our time there. The Hut itself was cozy and relaxing. It is the perfect space to decompress and unwind - lying in the hammock and looking at the shooting stars was truly magical! I can wholeheartedly recommend staying here if you want access to the outdoors, and/or to unwind. We're hoping to visit again and see more of the area - Colfax is overlooked, and there's so many adventures to be had! (Plus we are yet to try the sauna!).

    Mike2017-08-13T00:00:00Z
  • Definitely visit the Hut! If you are looking to get away from the city and get in touch with nature, you will love it here! Karen and Jordan are extremely thoughtful hosts and even better company!

    Jillian2017-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • The hut found us. Pilot greeted us. The sauna warmed us. The river cooled us. Karen welcomed us. We had a wonderful weekend in the Sierra foothills.

    Gardner2017-10-01T00:00:00Z
  • Can't say enough about Karen & Jordan. They've created a little piece of heaven by a fun river around 30 min from Nevada city. Their property is lovely and beautiful and the amenities in the hut were comfortable and the perfect woodsy getaway. Not to put them on the spot, but since Karen was around and available during our stay, she even made us breakfast and carted us around the river, making sure we had a fun float! She was an incredibly gracious and hospitable host. Between the relaxing time spent on their lovely property, the fun times at two nearby rivers, the wacky fun we had in Nevada city by night, Karen & Jordan hosted us for a very memorable getaway weekend. Big thanks!

    Ryan2017-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • We had an amazing time at Karen's hut in the woods. We were looking for a quiet weekend away in a secluded natural place and this was really perfect. Karen and Jordan were so helpful and welcoming in showing us around their amazing property and recommending fun things to do in the area. The hut itself was ideal - it had everything we needed and made us feel close to nature. We really hope to be back soon!!

  • Shout out to our hosts who made sure we had a good time. The hut is beautiful and a great place to relax and unwind.

Great location on 3 acres in a quiet neighborhood. Perfect for a family reunion or a restful get-away. Lots of gold country history, near the Bear River, American River and Rollins Lake. And a just little over an hour drive to beautiful Lake Tahoe.
  • This house looks just like the photos. It is great for a family reunion and the house is quant and cozy. The backyard is very spacious and there are plenty of rooms for people to stay in the house. Daryl was great to work with- answered all of my questions and got back to me quickly. Great experience!

    Lori2015-07-20T00:00:00Z
  • My stay was amazing. The house was awesome, the front, back, and side yards were incredibly spacious, and the neighborhood was great. Overall a truly first class experience. Would definitely come back again. Would definitely recommend.

  • Beautiful home in the mountains with plenty of room to celebrate my father's 80th birthday and Thanksgiving. Our hosts were easy to communicate with and left us their home spotless and all decorated for the holidays. Even with a houseful of people, there was always a quiet place to go with three living areas and lots of outside chairs to enjoy the view. The gourmet kitchen was well stocked and huge so no one got in each other's way preparing Thanksgiving. My family was very impressed that I found such a perfect place for our family reunion.

    Robin2016-11-26T00:00:00Z
  • Daryl was an excellent host. He was on top of all of the need-to-know details for my stay. The house and property were beautiful, I would gladly stay again! The wifi was great and the house was very comfortable.

    Micah2016-07-11T00:00:00Z
  • This house was beautiful and had everything needed to accommodate our party of 10. Plenty of bed space, extra blankets, towels, laundry room and stocked kitchen. Daryl was extremely helpful and responded very quickly to all of my questions. We would love to visit again and recommend it to anyone visiting the area!

    Anneke2015-06-08T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at Daryl's place for 2 days and had an absolutely amazing time. The house has several indoor and outdoor hangout areas that are perfect for large groups. We grilled on both the days we were there and the kitchen is very spacious and well equipped. I would gladly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a relaxed weekend.

    Prachi2016-05-31T00:00:00Z
  • The home was exceptionally clean and had a TON of amenities. The outside porch was a great spot for entertaining and the string lights added a really nice effect. The front door had a keyless entry lock on it which made getting into the house really. I would love to stay at this home again in the future.

    Yon2016-08-15T00:00:00Z
  • Extremely spacious and well maintained house. The back patio is amazing and Daryl made sure we had everything we needed to make our stay great. Great communication and the house was perfect! Would definitely stay here again if they would have us back. Thank you!

  • Meg and Lucas were great hosts and the cottage was perfect for us, highly recommended!

  • Had a great stay in this spacious, clean, adorable cottage!

    Katy2017-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • This was the best overall AirBnb experience we've had. Meg & Lucas were friendly, responsive, clear communicators. The cottage (not to mention the overall property) is gorgeous, comfortable, and well-appointed. Everything about the stay was easy and pleasant. Only minor issue - internet was kinda slow, but you're not going out there to just spend time on the computer/netflix anyway, and we were able to use our mobile hotspots easily enough. All in all, we can't wait to go back!

Our place is about a 20 minute drive to Grass Valley/Nevada City or Auburn, within an hour you can be skiing or visit Sacramento, less than 2 hours you can be in Reno, Tahoe north shore, or San Francisco. We are 10 minutes from Hiway 80 and 10 minutes from Hiway 49. You'll love our place because of the quiet, rural setting. You can watch the wildlife stroll through, or just relax in the quiet atmosphere.
This apartment is above our two car garage. It has one bedroom with a comfortable queen bed. There is a roll away that would be suitable for a child, but not an average adult. There is NO kitchen in the unit, but there is a small refrigerator, microwave, and keurig. The large bathroom has a shower only, no tub. There is a very cozy propane stove for heat or for ambiance, and an air conditioner. The unit is very open and bright. It has very nice views of the pond and the hills around us.
The foothills of the mountains are a lovely area. There are many historical places to visit in the towns of Grass Valley and Nevada City. They also have many small, locally run restaurants, shops, and entertainment. Many activities occur during the year at the Nevada County Fairgrounds, including the Fair in August and the Draft Horse Classic in September. The location of Sutters Mill, where gold was discovered is about an hours drive away. Sacramento is about an hours drive to wonderful restaurants, and of course the capitol of California. If you like snow skiing, it is about an hour away. Reno and Tahoe can be reached within a couple of hours. There are several wineries within a short driving time from us. We are very centrally located for easy day trips to many places.
  • It's a working farm on a pond, and it's a nice apartment. Besides some issues with water temperature in the shower, no complaints :) - it was specious and like described. Host was trying to be super helpful and we liked the animals . It's about 20 min to anything so tea, snacks and drinks in the room were helpful

  • Lee and Jim are great folk with a very nice studio above their garage in a secluded, very peaceful area. As quiet and relaxing as it is, there are stores, restaurants and necessities available within a short drive. Their farm animals are a nice touch that adds to the charm. Mornings were a treat with roosters serenading anyone within miles. I loved it!

    Gabriel2017-06-29T00:00:00Z
  • Jim and Lee are fabulous hosts. The space is very lovely and it is apparent that they both have taken a lot of pride in making sure that guests are welcomed, comfortable, and at ease. My two children, seven and five, loved seeing baby chickens, sheep and ducks. Jim and Lee welcomed us into their home and provided amazing farm fresh meals in the morning. All of the furnishings are beautiful. We loved sitting in the deck overlooking the pond, taking in the beautiful surroundings. The space is very fresh and inviting, and feels like a beach house in the country. It is very quiet, serene and a wonderful place to relax. I slept wonderfully in their queen size bed. The location is perfect for easy access to Grass Valley and Auburn. It is also a very quick drive to I 80. We absolutely loved our time there and were very thankful for such gracious hosts. I would recommend this Airbnb to anyone! We will definitely be back!

  • The Rural Shangri-La is the perfect getaway! Jim and Lee were such great hosts and you can tell they put great thought into the apartment space. It has all of the amenities you could ask for, is extremely clean, very child friendly, and truly gives you the experience of being at a farm. They even let us hold the 2 day old lambs, and sent us home with farm fresh chicken eggs. Their breakfasts were delicious, and the location was great. Quiet, private, and far enough from town to feel totally relaxed, (but not too far from town either). We can't wait to come back again!

    Gilbert 2017-04-30T00:00:00Z
  • The place was lovely. At our disposal were: comfort, cleanliness and availability of the host if necessary. Moreover, the subliminal view and the direct contact with nature was restful and inspiring. The picture does not do justice to this beauty. All for an an affordable price. The experience is worth it, and no matter the nature of the trip, you will find satisfaction guaranteed!

This is a relaxing, spacious, self-contained riverside studio in the lower floor of our home. Wake up in a comfortable Cal King bed to a beautiful view of the forest and river on our 20 acres. Relax in a hammock, fish, or paddle a kayak. Shower indoor or outdoors. Enjoy the privacy and convenience of a well-equipped kitchenette and bathroom. Private patio. Perfect for couples. Not suitable for children as this is on the river and in the woods. Only 3 miles and 3 turns from Hwy 80.
Bear River studio is only 3 miles and 3 turns off of Hwy. 80, yet is nestled in the woods on the rivers edge, in a quiet setting on our 20 acres. Play or fish in the river, take walks around the property on our trails, fall asleep to the sound of the river from your bed. You can explore the local area or simply hang out and de-stress.
Although we are only 3 miles from Hwy 80, it feels like you are in the wilderness. The studio is off of Dog Bar Road, which is a back way to Grass Valley and Nevada City. We only have one neighbor, and they are very friendly.
  • Mia welcomed us so warmly. She has a wonderful personal touch and made us feel at home. The studio apartment and natural setting, the well set-up spa and riverside all made for special get-away.

  • The pictures don't do it justice. This place is amazing! Private studio on first floor with private entrance. Spacious, clean, well equipped, comfy bed, indoor & outdoor shower, beautiful view of the river valley. Everything one wants for a cozy, quiet, relaxing getaway. Riverfront property with the Bear river running along side. Kayaks, hammock, horse shoes to name a few of the activities. Easy to find along I-80. Mia and her husband were the perfect hosts. They love life and are passionate about many things with many wonderful stories. We really enjoyed the evening conversation and drinks.

  • Mia and Tom were incredibly gracious hosts. The instant confirmation was nice because we hadn't planned far in advance, and Mia's alacrity in responding was much appreciated. The house and property are gorgeous and secluded, amenities/activities abundant, very friendly locals. Mia effortlessly straddled the line between being open for any/all inquiries and giving us space. I would absolutely come back and bask in amongst the stones (and very friendly dog) in the river!

    Valentina2016-08-09T00:00:00Z
  • This was my first time doing Air BnB so I was a little apprehensive. Mia greeted us promptly and toured us through the studio. It was really big and the bathroom is really nice! She had great information about local spots and winery recommendations. She invited us to come up on the upper deck for a glass of wine when we got settled in. The studio was beautiful with the entire front wall being all glass windows with a view of the river. It was totally private and had everything we needed and the bed was more comfortable than mine at home. There were lots of little thoughtful extras that made us feel like we were at a resort. There were kayaks and inner tubes available for floating! My boyfriend kayaked and I floated on an inter tube tethered to a tree so I wouldn't float down stream! We BBQ'd out our second night and Mia was kind enough to bring us some fresh veggies for our dinner from her gigantic garden. I don't know why I ever hesitated trying Air BnB. We had an awesome time and definitely plan to go back later this summer.

    Sherry2016-07-18T00:00:00Z
  • Mia met us with a bottle of wine that she had decanted for us despite the fact we were 2 hours late from city traffic! She made us feel incredibly relaxed on her beautiful property!

    Claire2016-07-25T00:00:00Z
  • It was a wonderful stay at Mia's place. The property was a perfectly located one amidst nature with the river at the backyard. Mia greeted us with a bottle of wine and also helped us with our bbq preparation. She also picked vegetables from her garden for our salad. Her hospitality was one of the best we ve had in many of our previous airbnb experiences, and so was her property. Would definitely suggest this property to anyone looking for a quiet getaway for the weekend.

    Soudipta2016-08-01T00:00:00Z
  • This was our favorite Airbnb to date! We loved the location to the river and being able to lounge by the beach area and just listen to river flowing by. Mia has thought of everything one could need to thoroughly enjoy this outdoor paradise. The studio itself was clean and comfortable, and had everything we could ask for to enjoy our stay. The bottle of wine on arrival was icing on the cake. We definitely can't wait to come back and spend more time enjoying the river!

    Salitha2016-08-22T00:00:00Z
  • What a lovely bit of paradise on the Bear River. We were so happy with the location and access to the river with all the great places to hang out and equipment we could use like the inner tubes for floating on the river, hammock, kayaks, hot tub etc... I wished we had more time to take advantage of it all. Mia was a very gracious host, giving us a tour and making us feel very welcome at her home. Our room was spacious, the shower and bathroom excellent, the views form those huge windows are so peaceful. It is the perfect place to unplug, relax and retreat.

Quiet and secluded. Close to ski areas, shops in Grass Valley, Nevada City and Colfax. Close to Amtrak.
Grass Valley Award-winning "green" lakefront retreat on 8 secluded acres of forest. Nestled in the Sierras the glass walls of this contemporary home completely open to the forest and magnificent lake views. Featured in Sunset Magazine, completely off-grid, this showcase home is perfect for a romantic getaway. Private trail to lake and canoe for guests' use. 10 minutes from historic gold rush towns. Designed by renowned architect, Michelle Kaufmann. See our lotus lake house website for guest reviews. "Build it Green" and "Keep the Sierras Green" certification. Dog-friendly.
Quiet, secluded with lots of Oak and Pine trees.
  • "Green" Off Grid Glass House is amazing! The house itself is an ideal place for us- glass walls to get you closer to nature, modern amenities with washer & dryer, & the surround sound while listening to music or watching movies is such a great addition! You won't miss any part of the movie even when you're in the bathroom. We love all the furniture, the comfortable bed, plenty of soft towels, plus bathrobes ( I've never seen my hubby in a bathrobe before :-). Additionally, because this place is a dog friendly house, Barrie & Tod left us with doggie toys, bed, and lots of towels/sheets to use for our two lovely dogs. And then there's the location, very quiet, serene, romantic, and private - no neighbors close by...we drove over seven hours from LA but we didn't care because the place/location is such a treat to be off the grid. We walked down to the lake but we didn't use the canoe available because it was a little too cold for us but maybe it's a good enough reason to return in the summer. If you're a runner like my hubby and I, they have a trail from the house to the lake which is very suitable for some speed training- I believe the trail was made to accomodate mountain bikers but we did enjoy it too! The big wooden deck has all the furnitures, gas grill, heat lamp that can be used if you would like to just chill on the deck watching the stars. We also asked for Chris' assistance to help us with the heater (caretaker of the house) and he was also such a nice fellow and very helpful. We will definitely return soon!!! Thanks Barrie & Tod!

  • Tucked away in Grass Valley and certainly off the grid, Tod's Lotus house was certainly the perfect retreat for the weekend. As pictured, the house sat atop a small sloping hill overlooking a serene lake surrounded by trees. Powered by a little yet mighty red generator, the stay imparted on us, a pleasant experience about being more mindful, more green and more relaxed. The welcoming and lovingly built house also provided everything one could possibly need for a small getaway—from kitchen and bathroom essentials to a modest collection of entertainment (games, movies, etc). The accommodations we found during our stay reflected how thoughtful the owners are. Our lucky dogs also enjoyed the property as well. And even though it was raining all weekend, the weather was perfect. Being warm and toasty inside while listening to the rain beating down on the roof was a treat we seldom have time to appreciate. My friend and I will be returning in the near future. For newcomers to the Lotus House, be sure to read the House Manual cover to cover on operating about the property and nearby attractions/restaurants. Thank you Tod for having us!

  • We had a fantastic stay. The cabin is just amazing, a perfect retreat in the woods. Bring enough food for your entire stay, you don't want to leave the place for a even second while you're there. And cooking with all windows and doors open in the middle of a forest, breakfasts on that patio, just perfect.

    Jan2015-07-13T00:00:00Z
  • The house was lovely- well appointed and perched up top the lake nestled in the trees. Not far from town if you wanted to go in and have a nice dinner somewhere. Couldn't ask for better accommodations. One caveat is that the music from the boats, the boat engines and jet skis on the lake were loud (from early AM to late PM). Even perched atop the mountain, we could hear the words and bass clearly from every boat that passed by (and there were many of them). The boats played their music loudly, but it also seemed to reverberate through the mountain to amplify it where it might not have normally travelled. The sound was more of an issue (I'd assume) because we were there for part of a holiday weekend. It was a bummer because we went there hoping to 'get away from it all' and sadly we were right up there in it. Looking back, we should have expected that with it being on a recreational lake, but since we didn't- I'm sharing this tidbit to help others who might be sensitive to noise. We still had a great time regardless, due to the house and appointments being so lovely and thoughtful overall. The next day we went down to the American River and frolicked in the beautiful clear waters, which helped us avoid the noisiest time of the day at the lake. It was a nice excursion that I'd highly recommend! So- it's an absolutely wonderful place, but if you're going in the summer months just be aware of the potential for noise to emanate from the lake. Mornings and afternoons are quieter, so if you go out during the day you probably don't have to worry too much. Thank you Barrie and Tod for letting us use your lovely home!

    Kristie2016-06-22T00:00:00Z
  • Everything we expected and more.

Tranquil ranch setting just 15 minutes to Grass Valley or Auburn, 20 minutes to Nevada City about an hour to Sacramento, Forest Hills or Folsom. Come enjoy your own private cabin and be sure to bring your friendly dogs to play with our ranch dogs. Outdoor activities abound with trails, hiking, biking, 5 minutes to Bear river access. There's lots to enjoy or just relax on your own patio. Lake Tahoe is only an hour away for a great day trip.
THE SPACE - Cozy and comfortable, about 400 sq ft, new furnishings, perfect for a two or three good friends. If you have a second couple and don't want to squeeze two people into a twin bed we also have a travel trailer we'll rent out for sleeping only; it also has a queen bed. You will notice how quiet it is here and how many stars you can see at night. BEDROOM - Has a queen size real mattress. I'm giving you fair warning that many of our guests sleep in late due to the quiet setting and comfortable bed. KITCHEN - Mini kitchen with 2 burner hot plate, microwave, coffee maker, small fridge, sink, dishes and some cooking essentials. There are also paper plates because you're on vacation and who wants to do dishes, right? COUCH/SLEEPER - A Serta convertible couch that folds down into a twin bed. The couch has spring coils and batting and we've added a foam egg crate topper for added comfort. I've slept on this and it's comfy. It's the size of a twin bed and while you can fit two adults, they'll need to like to cuddle. It's best suited for one adult or a couple of kids. CLIMATE CONTROL - Separate AC units in the main room and bed room. Electric fireplace in the main room, separate wall heaters for the bed room and bath room. WI-FI - yes we have it but it can be spotty at times, remember we live in the country. There isn't a TV in the guest house, we figure you're here to relax but if you want to binge watch Game of Thrones, please bring a tablet or laptop. PARKING - for your vehicle right in front of the guest house
We live in a HOA on private roads. To get to our home you will travel on a couple of private roads that say you can only pass with permission. Consider permission granted.

    Alicia2017-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay at the Flying Pig! Nita and Ross were super friendly and hospitable. We enjoyed hanging out with them and their two friendly dogs. The cabin is brand new! Totally clean and cozy and Nita had the air conditioner on for us before we arrived, which was super thoughtful. Everything was clearly marked, and communication was timely and clear. Grass Valley is such a charming rural town with a lot of beautiful farms... a very peaceful place to rest for us after we had braved the American South Fork River that day. Would definitely return!

    Naomi2017-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • The flying pig is breathtaking and the drive up is so much fun. If you enjoy a great nights sleep in your own apartment, yet still have friendly faces and wagging tails to greet you in the morning.... this is the place to go.

  • Peaceful cabin with a beautiful drive to Nevada City or an outdoor adventure in the mountains or on a river or lake. Large gated and fenced in area is ideal for dogs to run and play.

  • Nita and Brian (and their dogs Gunther and Zelda) were terrific hosts. They were very friendly, considerate, and helpful during my stay. They kept the lines of communication open and prompt before I arrived, which was much appreciated. Their guest house and ranch is definitely a nice and peaceful place to visit, not far from Auburn or Yuba River. I would consider returning again to stay on future trips.

Welcome to the Cottage on the Farm! Enjoy a private getaway, but still be close to everything! 45 minutes from Boreal Ski Resort, 90 minutes from Tahoe or the Napa Valley, and only 2 1/2 hours from San Francisco, whatever you like to do, the Cottage is a perfect home base. Whether you like skiing, hiking, fishing, kayaking, wine tasting or antique shopping, or just relaxing, you have come to the right area.
For years our friends have enjoyed visiting in the cottage, and they have encouraged us to share it with you! The cottage has been newly refurbished--with everything! Brand new deluxe queen size bed with cozy bedding, table and chairs that look out the french doors on the property. Futon that can sleep two. There's also a small desk. There is no TV, but you can stream movies or videos on your device. Kitchen area has fridge, microwave, large toaster oven, crock-pot, electric skillet, rice cooker, blender, spices, utensils and more. We supply coffee, tea, creamer, sugar and small snacks for your convenience. If you need a special ingredient, just ask. We have a pretty well-stocked kitchen in the main house. There is also an outside cooking area, with a BBQ and 2 burner propane stove. Propane heat will keep you toasty. Our property is a mini farm, so there are some things to be aware of. There is an unfenced pond on the property, so we don't recommend bringing small children. Infants are ok, but toddlers are sometimes hard to keep track of! There is a washer and dryer on the mud porch of the main house that you are welcome to use if necessary. We also have an iron, ironing board and probably anything else you might need. We are here to make your stay enjoyable!
This is a rural area, but is close to so many attractions. Into micro brews or wine? Auburn has some great breweries and a great wine trail. Hiking or biking? We've got that! Did you say water? We are close to the Bear River, the American River, Rollins Lake and more! Are you a skier? Less than an hour up the hill to some great resorts. History buff? You've come to the right place. Check our website for lots of details. (URL HIDDEN)
  • Had an amazing stay in Colfax, Suzanne is such a caring host and made my stay extremely comfortable. The heating works perfectly, kept us cozy while it was freezing outside. It's an easy drive to a couple small ski resorts and a lot of hiking trails. Would definitely stay here again, was one of the best vacations I've had.

  • My husband and I like hiking, so we were looking for a place near some parks with scenic views, and we were very happy to find Cozy Cottage on the Farm place. We stayed here for three nights and we really enjoyed it. During our stay we visited several parks with easy/moderate trails, such as Hidden Falls Park and Auburn State Recreation Area. The most interesting was Foresthill Divide Loop Trail - 11.5 miles moderate trail with picturesque views. House is very cozy, secluded, clean and very comfortable. Thanks to Suzanne and Ed we felt like at home. They are great hosts, very friendly and welcoming. They were easy to get in touch with and answered all questions we had. Suzanne sent us a link to their website which is packed with loads of details on restaurants, wineries, sport activities, historical landmarks and so on. We haven't had a chance to visit this place before, so the website was very helpful! I would definitely recommend this place!

  • Suzanne and Ed were wonderful hosts. The cottage was overstuffed with all the amenities you would need and it was immaculate. The fire pit was all made up for a cozy marshmallow roast and the ingredients for s'mores left out. We didn't do that, left it for Ed and Suzanne to enjoy! The bed and bedding were very comfortable, romantic. Sitting by the pond birdwatching was peaceful. It was nice to have the wifi to plan the next leg of our trip...

  • The stay at the cottage was just what this momma needed! Three mom gal pals and I needed a one night get away not too far from Sacramento and Suzanne and eds place was PERFECT. The cottage was clean, cute and cozy. We received a warm welcome and anything we needed throughout our stay ed and sue were happy to oblige. Even shared butter and sour cream out of their personal fridge. We enjoyed laying out in the pool, sitting on the dock listening to frogs and smores by the fire (which was already set up for us, just had to light it). The bed in the cottage is sooooo comfy! It was just the reset one needs! I will deff be back and will be spreading the joy of this cute little place. Thank you Sue and Ed!

  • We had a wonderful stay at the cottage, and Suzanne and Ed were fantastic hosts! The yard was beautiful and there were lots of nice places to relax or eat dinner outside. We particularly enjoyed the watching the chickens wander around the garden and we were amazed and delighted to find out that the barn is a puzzle-making workshop! We were on a limited budget so we cooked dinner every night, and the kitchen was so well stocked that we were able to cook just about anything I normally cook at home. All of the kitchen equipment and other appliances in the cottage worked well and were in good condition, and I was even able to make biscuits and a pie in the toaster oven! The area was beautiful and we had fun exploring nearby museums and hiking trails on the weekends. Suzanne and Ed were great hosts, and when there was a heatwave this summer they went out of their way to help us stay cool by installing an air conditioner. There was also a pool! Thank you so much!!

    Alyssa2017-07-01T00:00:00Z
  • The place is full of small little extras and big extras that make it really just like "home", which is great when you are traveling! The property is off one of the main side roads..but the place is very quiet, serene, and green :) Both the bed and futon are quite comfortable. Suzanne made great effort to make sure we were comfortable and had all our needs met. If you want a weekend get away, a nice respite, or a unique little spot to stop along the way to tahoe, or just stay in auburn...this is a great choice!

  • My fiance and I really needed a nice getaway from urban life, and stumbled upon this sweet little gem of a cottage. The cottage is nicely decorated, and has an elegant yet rustic charm with an airy atmosphere. The bed a VERY comfortable, and accent lighting sets the mood for just what we needed: relaxation. The property is nicely kept, with flower beds and beautiful trees, the pond offers a place to just simply space out (meditate, contemplate, however you wish to call it). We were there on some very hot days. The pool was awesome, and there is a river, not far away where we found a nice, private place to bask in the sun and get into the river to cool off. We used the BBQ one evening, and sat outside watching the chickens run around while we ate. The cottage has plenty of fans and an air conditioner for hot days, though the night time temperatures were perfect, no need for the AC for sleeping. Suzanne is a wonderful host, super friendly, and very helpful. I highly recommend this place for a valuable getaway. Thanks for having us!

    Lisa2017-07-10T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage is one of the best Airbnb's I've stayed at! There was wonderful communication and the most adorable decor. Everything we could have possibly needed was in the house, easy to find and we took a great hike just a few miles away suggested in the cottage guidebook. We were sad to only spend one night here.

Retreat to a beautiful, secluded Gold Country getaway with views of the High Sierra Mountains and the American River. Relax in the sun by our large swimming pond! The perfect place for small corporate or group retreats, or your next family vacation!
OUR PROPERTY is uniquely located on a ridge with expansive views of the American river and the majestic sierra mountains. The house is peacefully secluded and, though you would never know it, is completely off grid. It is powered by solar panels, with a backup generator. We are located 10 minutes from I-80 on a 3 mile long dirt road. Right in between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe THE HOUSE has two private bedrooms, one with a queen bed, one with a full bed. The large upstairs loft includes one queen and one full bed along with a fold out couch bed. The house can comfortably sleep ten on beds with the possibility of 2-4 more on couches and roll away beds. There are three full bathrooms, two downstairs and one upstairs. THE GOURMET KITCHEN is fully equipped with everything you will need including a large 6 burner gas range with griddle and oven, large refrigerator, microwave, and outdoor gas and weber BBQs. THE DINING ROOM seats 6-10 people with deck access to accommodate even more. IN THE SUMMER time, dive into our large swimming pond with water trampoline, and take a walk through our large garden with varieties of fruits and vegetables for your culinary enjoyment. There are also public access lakes and rivers located nearby. IN THE WINTER, gather around the central wood stove with a cup of your favorite tea, and take in the views of beautiful snow capped mountains. The dry sauna is also a plus on a cold winter day. We are approximately 45 minutes from the nearest ski resort. -Be aware that although we rarely get much snow, it is always a possibility and four wheel drive or chains would be required.
Our home sits in the middle of 130 scenic acres of secluded and very private property. There are spectacular views of the high sierras and the magnificent American river. The giant oaks, pines and firs provide shade for the large azalea, camellia and rhododendron groves but plenty of sun for the many summer flowers, full orchard and year round vegetable garden. There are foot paths and seating for quiet times of reflection and a redwood boardwalk that leads to a pavilion and quarter acre swimming pond. The pavilion area seats many and could be used for an outdoor meeting area or just for fun! There are no power or phone lines because the lodge is completely powered by solar! This is no rustic cabin, built with the design of a Frank Lloyd Wright home this modern 3300 square foot home has all the comforts, they just happen to be in the middle of the woods.
  • Jim's place is like an oasis amongst the redwood trees. You truly feel like you are secluded in nature. Jin and his son were the most gracious hosts. The house was extremely comfortable and had everything you could possibly need and want. The pond was amazing. We had planned to leave to go to the river one of the days, but ended up not wanting to leave the house and all it had to offer. We will be back every year. Best Airbnb experience to date!

  • We said at the resort for 2 nights and had one of the best experience of our life. Jim was extremely helpful and made sure we could find the place. He said significant time explaining the various things we could do and make the best of our time. He was available and could be reached if we had a quick question. Nothing in the home was off limit and he truly wanted us to have a good time and build memories. We went with in with 3 additional families. The place did not feel cramped, there was adequate sleeping space. The pond and the patio are excellent and we made the best use of our time. I would recommend the place to friends and family. This is perfect weekend get away place for families

    Amit2015-05-25T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing property! This house has absolutely everything you want and need. Jim is such a nice guy, he took the time to tell us the story of the property (it's very sweet) and you can tell he cares a lot about it. Highly recommended!

    Laurel and Sky2015-09-07T00:00:00Z
  • Jim's house is one of the most enchanting properties I have ever set foot on. A group of 11 of us traveled there on the 4th of July, and it was the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of our busy San Francisco lives. From the moment your car hits the gravel road that leads to the property you feel like you are leaving reality and entering a magical space. He has taken meticulous care to create a paradise. Our trip was perfect. The house sits on 130 acres and runs completely on solar, which was a really neat experience. The views from the house are wonderful - the pictures do not do them justice. The pond is massive, much bigger than we were expecting. The house has been decorated in a very eclectic style, and although there were 11 of us there was more than enough room for us to fit comfortably. I believe 10 of us slept on beds and one on the couch. We grilled, swam, played pool, BBQd, played board games on the deck, picked plums in the orchard, and even went down to the river on the last day of our stay (it's within driving distance and there are cliffs you can jump off of). Jim was an incredibly warm and gracious host. He went out of his way to accommodate all of our needs and took extra care to make sure our trip was perfect. He took his time telling us about the history of the house, which we really appreciated. He also made himself very available in the week leading up to the trip -- I never had any trouble contacting him with questions or concerns. And once we were actually at the house he completely respected our privacy. We really felt the house was our own for a few days. I cannot say enough about the time we spent at this house! I felt depressed when I made it back to my cramped apartment in San Francisco and was already wishing I was back in the woods. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to get away for some time -- be it a corporate retreat or a family reunion or a bunch of friends like us! Hats off to you, Jim, for a beautiful house and an amazing stay. We will certainly be back!

  • Jim was the ideal host, very welcoming and flexible with my requests. I can't say enough about how much we loved the experience of this magical retreat. It had everything we could have possibly needed or wanted. The kitchen was perfect for the feast we prepared, spacious with a huge range. We ate outdoors with a spectacular view of the river valley and sunset. The pond was the perfect temperature and Jim provided a giant stack of towels, plenty of seating, pond floats and a rope swing for the daring. A truly relaxing and fun experience. I think every single guest mentioned coming back next summer for a reunion. Thank you Jim for providing the perfect place for my 40th birthday celebration. Unforgettable.

    Tiffany2015-08-02T00:00:00Z
  • firstly, the photos really don't do this place justice, the only problem you are likely to have is where to sit and have your morning coffee...... out front overlooking the amazing mountain views, out back on the deck looking out over the amazing river views or out by the pond (which is huge, much bigger than it looks in the photos!) watching the dragonflies dance. we only spent a few nights, it wasn't long enough and we didnt want to leave, but even after just a few days we were super relaxed. thank you again and for sure we will be back as soon as possible.

    Alistair2017-07-03T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Jim's place was a Fantastic Experience! We were 10 people, staying for 2 nights for the New Year's Eve. Jim is a great host. He did everything that is possible to make our stay comfortable and memorable. First, let me start with the surroundings. Photos does not express the whole beauty of it. The forest around, the view of the American River (north fork) in the valley below, the pond in front of the house, the fireplace outside... everything was very, very marvelous. Second, the house itself is very comfortable and clean. You can see that Jim and his family really live in it. The interior design is quite unique and well thought. Every one of us got a bed place to sleep, and there were several couches free to sleep for few more people. Jim gave us a full access to their full stack kitchen with all the appliances and dishes, which was very handy for us to cook the holiday dinner for 10 people. Dining was big enough to seat all of us. Last, but not least, is the solar experience. Jim kindly offered a tour over the house and walked us through the whole solar-powering process. From the solar panels below the pond, to the batteries, to the controls in the house. We used all the power we needed and never had to use the generator, except once for sauna only. The heat in the house came from the three wood stoves (in the living room, bedroom and in the kitchen). Jim made sure we have enough wood supplies and helped to make run the fire while we were out. House was very warm in the evenings, which felt really good after the skiing day at Tahoe lake. Jim was very kind to present us the couple of bottles of wine accompanied with Brie Cheese and bread, which we served for the New Year's dinner. Oh, and also make sure to meet Bow and Yuki, two playful labradors! They will follow you if you plan to bike around the property. There are 3 bikes that Jim prepared for the guests. He made sure the air pressure is fine and bikes are ready to go. Jim, thanks a lot for such unforgettable stay. We will definitely come back in summer to swim in the pond and hike in the neighborhoods.

    Zhanat2015-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed at the property for 2 nights with a group of 10 and it was amazing. Jim was there when we arrived to show everything we need to know about the house and swimming pool. He came back the next day to show us the rope jump into the swimming pool and we had lot of fun/fear doing it. We are thinking about coming back next year, it was awesome! Thanks Jim.

  • Fantastic Cabin that I would definitely love to visit again in the future. We had so much fun swimming in the creek, relaxing in the hot tub, and enjoying dinner and games in a beautiful relaxed cabin. The communication and accommodation by the host was wonderful as well.

  • Perfect space for a quiet peaceful weekend. Diane has her hosting game down pat!

  • We spent most of our time sitting by the creek. The sound of the water rolling over the rocks was calming. The weather was perfect and the water is so clear in the creek that you can see the river rocks at the bottom. Beautiful butterflies and blue dragonflies were flitting about. Tiny birds were chirping and flying from tree to tree. The sunshine dappled the water through the trees. It was delightful.

  • Overall a really nice place to stay if you want to visit the Yuba River and Nevada City! Love the creek in the back, the hammocks, and the hot tub. The kitchen is well-stocked too. The master bathroom is missing a door, which is a little awkward for folks in the master bedroom suite.

Introducing the Cedar House! Experienced Airbnb Superhosts are proud to offer this light, bright 1940s charmer in the Cedar Ridge community of Grass Valley. Less than five minutes' drive from downtown, two minutes from Empire Mine, 10 minutes to Nevada City. Quiet street, tall trees, close to walking trails and a block from the General Store and Post Office. Brand new floors throughout, fresh paint, new appliances and fixtures.
This newly remodeled space is ready for you to move in and make it yours for your stay! We are committed to providing our guests a premium, comfortable experience. To be upfront, please note that the sofa-bed is small, with dimensions of a European "small-double." It would suit two children, but two adults might find it cramped. The floorplan is "open," with all rooms flowing into one another. While the bedroom is separate and around a corner, the only interior door is the one to the bathroom.
The street is a special one, in a neighborhood of peaceful, friendly folks and families. It's the kind of street on which kids put up basketball hoops, their games only rarely interrupted by the occasional car.Mature trees stand like sentinels at property corners and organically throughout yards both sweeping and small. There is even a Christmas tree farm a few houses down! The delights of downtown Grass Valley are a scant four-minute drive away. Better yet, leave your car keys at home and enjoy the walkability of a micro-town. A general store with local fare (including hot pasties) is located a block away, the neighborhood Post Office Is another block, and a trail leading to Empire Mine meanders through nearby wilderness. Local children often play in the parking lot and field behind the Grace Bible Church.
  • Clean and so peaceful tucked away from the mellow street my pups were not bothered at all. Enjoyed our stay

    Natalie2017-07-03T00:00:00Z
  • MaryJane's place is located in a quiet, wooded neighborhood about a 10 minute drive from downtown Grass Valley and a 15 minute drive from Nevada City, with easy access to both. The house is on the small side but doesn't feel cramped or crowded in any way. Gets good light. I was only there two nights but could have easily stayed longer. I didn't meet MaryJane in person but the self check-in is easy and she messaged me a couple times to see if I needed anything. Recommend!

  • It's a beautiful cottage surrounded by tall cedar trees, near the Empire Gold Mine National Park. Just a short drive to Grass Valley and to the Yuba River. The inside was recently remodeled and done well. Every amenity you need is available. Plenty of parking space, and located in a quiet neighborhood. Cell reception is spotty sometimes, but there is strong wifi. There's a gas station and general store within walking distance. My girlfriend and I absolutely loved it there!

    Keith2017-06-12T00:00:00Z
  • This rental was very clean and well appointed. The hosts have paid attention to detail. It is on a quiet, residential street in a convenient location. Mary Jane is a very considerate host, responding to inquiries and concerns very quickly and in a genuinely helpful manner.

  • This is a lovely home that is very clean and thoughtfully decorated. We used it as a base for our stay in Grass Valley while we attended the Bluegrass Festival. It is on a quiet street away from main part of town, but only 10 minutes from downtown Grass Valley. The master bed is very comfortable. The bathroom small but clean. Mary Jane does mention in the description that fold out mattress in living space is not ideal for adult. I would concur. Our 10 year old fit on it and slept fine, but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone larger. Mary Jane was not on site but was quick to respond via messages when we had questions. I would definitely stay here again on our next stay in Grass Valley.

  • We couldn't handle another weekend of cold and fog in San Francisco. We wanted to head to the foothills and jump in a river. So lucky to find availability at Georgeann's beautiful horse ranch in Grass Valley. It's about a 3 hour drive from SF and makes for a perfect get-a way. She made us feel very comfortable in her home. We were able to bring our dog Luna who got along great with her Bloodhound Bessie. Watched a beautiful sunset from the deck and had a terrific sleep. The next morning she introduced us to her four gorgeous horses and took us and the dogs to a creek and park nearby. Georgeann is full of life and great stories and she also respected our privacy. She's a really wonderful host, we highly recommend a stay with her.

  • Georgeann is so sweet and hospitable. Her space is beautiful and quiet and I'm in love with her bloodhound Bessie. This is the perfect spot for an animal lover who needs a country getaway. And it is a short drive to town and to the river.

  • Georgeann was a great host. She was very respectful and helpful. Very dog friendly and had coffee and breakfast for us every morning. We caught up on our rest in a very peaceful environment. The ranch and horses were a nice change of pace for our urban lives. Easy access to Auburn, Grass valley and Nevada city for all you dining and shopping needs. We hit the rivers and really enjoyed our gold country retreat. Thank you Georgann! We would be happy to return.

  • Great stay, Georgeann is superfriendly and I loved her dog. She made breakfast and awesome coffee and clearly likes hosting. Be advised that this is a room in a house with no separate entrance--for some reason I thought this was a separate entrance. About 25 min to Nevada City.

  • We attend the Draft Horse Classic in Grass Valley every year and decided to stay with Georgeann at Lodestar Gold this year. I was attracted to the fact that she is a horsewoman as I am. Georgeann was a wonderful host and we were friends in no time. We followed her directions to the house without a hitch. Our room was lovely and quite comfortable as was the bathroom that is across the hall. The location is quite peaceful and the perfect place for horses. I enjoyed meeting Georgeann's horses and we shared many stories about our Arabian horses. We can't wait to go back!

    Anne2015-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • Georgeann is the most courteous on top person. Her communication is tip top. Her stories lovely to listen to. We loved the peacefulness and I was even able to bond a little with the three horses.

  • We had a wonderful time staying with Georgeann she is so lovely and we felt very welcome in her home. We wished we had more time so we could have stayed longer. Would highly recommend staying here. She gave us lots of great recommendations for the rest of our trip. We loved her hound - beast! She even took the time out for us to meet her horses. Just make sure you follow her directions and not the gps as it will take you to a fire road.

    Elyta2015-07-05T00:00:00Z
  • A lovely stay. Georgeann is a gracious host, the room was clean and comfortable, and the setting very peaceful. Her dog Bessie is a sweetheart and if was fun meeting her horses. We'll certainly return next time we visit the area.

  • Janice and Jim's Sunshine House was a perfect, private retreat for my and my husband's trip to visit family in the Grass Valley/Nevada City area. First, this house is aptly named! It is modern, clean and comfortable. Second, I love the big windows overlooking nature -- no houses or buildings in sight! The house is on a very quiet street in a rural neighborhood. And third, it is much more than a house, the property includes walking trails, a well-engineered pond, a pretty patio with grill, and hammock and swings. Janice is very accessible, willing to help you get settled when you arrive. She and Jim are ideal hosts. I highly recommend the Sunshine House!

    Sharla2016-07-05T00:00:00Z
  • The Sunshine House is an absolute gem tucked into the woods of Grass Valley. Perfect for a retreat, the property is quiet and serene. The house is newly constructed and thoughtfully decorated with reading nooks, extra sleeping spaces and an open floor plan perfect for lounging, yoga, playing games, or cooking group dinners. Outside has lots of outdoor seating including a big hammock and the coolest hanging chairs as well as a propane grill and small infrared sauna. Janice and Jim have clearly put a lot of love and care into this place and you can definitely feel it from the moment you arrive. They were very easy to communicate with and made sure I felt welcomed. Truly a wonderful AirBnb experience that my friends and I will not soon forget.

    Johanna2015-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • My friends and I had a lovely time at this home! They were really happy about how quiet and spacious it was. We had a peaceful and laughter-filled time, with some great massages as well!

    Candace2015-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • We felt very welcomed. The house just beautiful and open. We were 2 families and had great dinners and enjoyed the patio and swinging chairs. The blackberries were ripe too! I did think the pond was swim able but it was a little merky to swim in - but it was nice to look at. Thank you, it was a wonderful experience.

    Jillian2016-07-13T00:00:00Z
  • We had a group of eight (7 adults/ 1 baby) at the Sunshine house over the weekend. The house is beautiful and very well equipped for visitors. We each had a comfortable place to sleep and the open kitchen/living area was perfect for socializing. We made several meals and found the kitchen to be very well equipped. All in all it was the perfect Airbnb experience. I should note that we were a little surprised to find only one bathroom, but it turned out never to be a problem.

    Meg2015-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • Thank you, Janice and Jim. Your house is a real retreat. We had a such a great time that we look forward to coming again sometime soon!

    Shachar2015-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing place! The magical tranquility of this house engulfs you as soon as you step in the door. The house is well equipped and Jim and Janice are super responsive and welcoming. Highly recommended.

Our home is an easy drive only 2 miles off of Hwy 49. We are a 15 minute drive from town which has all amenities. Raleys, Safeway, CVS, Walgreens, movie theaters, wineries, boutique shopping and excellent restaurants in quaint, historic Grass Valley and Nevada City towns. Only a couple "box stores" in the area and thats how we like it! The closest restaurants are within a 10 minute drive. These are a Mexican Restaurant and a pizza parlor. We look forward to seeing you soon!! Michele and Leonard
  • My husband and I were visiting his parents who live in the area. We did not want to stay in a hotel again, as we had in years past. We were fortunate to find Michele and Leonard's home. It is a beautiful home with spectacular views, and in a very peaceful quiet neighborhood. Michele and Leonard were wonderful hosts, leaving us fresh bread and lemonade for our arrival. They were very attentive and easy to communicate with us. We very much enjoyed our brief stay, and hope to stay there again in the future. Susan and Aaron - Seattle

The space and location are good for couples, solo adventurers, and business travelers. There is also a large hammock for an extra person. 10 min to the County Fairgrounds. We will provide local information/tips based on your interests.
Kitchenette area has a microwave, tea/coffee-making appliances, mini fridge with separate freezer, and a sink (not a real/full kitchen). Dishes, utensils, etc. provided, as well as complimentary tea, yogurt, snacks, and whatever goodies we decide to throw in.
This is a quiet neighborhood with lots of deer, turkeys and other wildlife. Please drive slowly. There are multiple music and entertainment venues in Grass Valley and Nevada City. We can help with schedules of events (or see our "guidebook" included with this listing), but a good resource is KVMR, the local radio station. You will need a car to get into town.
  • A lovely spot for a getaway. C was especially helpful in recommending nearby hikes in the mountains-- would definitely recommend for anyone looking for outdoor adventures and a quiet place to relax afterward.

  • This is a great, cozy, peacful place and only ten mins from downtown Grass Valley. It has a cabin feel to it, with a scenic landscape. Including wild animals, such as deer and turkey, grazing by.

  • Carol's home was lovely and we had a great time visiting Grass Valley while staying at her place. We had to attend an event in downtown and it was very close. About 12 mins away. The living space was very clean/spotless and contained everything that we needed. Since we were on the bottom floor of the hostess' house, she was easily accessible and helped us settle in when we checked in. We entered through the private entrance, but Carol was able to greet us through the indoor entrance. She answered all our questions and gave a mini tour of all the amenities. She even left us organic snacks and white wine! The house is in a quiet neighborhood and is surrounded by tall pine trees. It was very peaceful and you could see the stars very clearly at night. Overall, the location was beautiful - we even saw deer in the front yard.

  • Susan is a great host. The accommodations were as described. I stayed in the cabin and there is a shared living room space and shared restroom in the main house. Susan has a nice food garden and a small bunch of chickens and ducks to keep you company as well. The location is conveniently located to the Auburn area. I was very satisfied with my stay, I only wish my schedule would have allowed more time so just relax and unwind, as Susan's place would be perfect for that.
