Otel
“Peoponi is a stunning boutique hotel in Shela. It is located at the seafront and is a great place for sundowners and dinner. The food we had at Peponi Hotel was always outstanding! Like Lamu House Hotel, it is one of the places that is great for a special evening out.”

“Get a full introduction of the region, both past and present. You will see a fascinating collection of the Swahili, Pokomo, Orma, Boni and other hinterland tribes.”

“This beautiful boutique hotel is located at the doorstep of ONEWAY House, right at the seafront. Lamu House hosts a restaurant with an amazing homely atmosphere. Here you can enjoy an evening with some great cocktails, cold beers and delicious food. One of our favorite places in Town for dinner. ”

“Right in front of the main jetty, Petley's is the local watering hole for just about everyone. In fact, it's the only non-hotel bar in Lamu to serve alcohol. Expect almost anything, from good fun and merriment to enough hassle to speed you through the doors.”

“Dimond Beach Hotel is located on the beautiful deserted beach on Manda. The restaurant with an outside seating area and a beautiful sea view is welcoming outside guests for lunch and dinner. It is also a great place to just have drinks when visiting Manda. On Fridays there is a movie night where both locals and tourists get together to enjoy an open-air movie with some fresh Pizza from their original Pizza Oven. In case you are going to visit Diamond in the evening we would advise you to coordinate the transport back in advance as finding a boat during that time can sometimes be challenging on Manda.”

“There are waterfront restaurants all over the place, but the Stopover’s friendly staff and excellent grub (of the spicy Swahili-seafood sort) make it a cut above the competition, particularly the seafood curries. Great fruit juices, too. ”

“A man without a donkey is a donkey, claims one Swahili proverb. Or, as the staff of this sanctuary might tell you, a man who doesn’t look after his donkey is a donkey. With around 3000 donkeys active on Lamu, Equus asinus is the main form of transport here. Visitors are free to visit the sanctuary and learn about its work – donations appreciated.”

“This squat castle was built by the Sultan of Paté between 1810 and 1823. From 1910 right up to 1984 it was used as a prison. It now houses the island’s library, which holds one of the best collections of Swahili poetry and Lamu reference work in Kenya, while the upstairs walkway is a gallery space for temporary exhibitions (stunning photos of the Tana River delta, when we visited). Entry is free with a ticket for Lamu Museum.”

“Manda is located on the channel opposite Shela and hosts some magnificent beaches. Manda is one of our favorite spots to relax a day at the beach. For lunch, dinner or just some refreshing drinks at the bar you could visit the stunning Majilis Resort ($$$). They also offer visiting guests to use the pool or their beach beds for a daily fee. Another option for grabbing drinks or having lunch dinner on Manda is the Diamond Beach Hotel ($$) mentioned above. The southern tip of Manda harbors coral cliffs and outcrops that are an amazing place for taking walks. Transportation to Manda Island is by boat.”

“The best of the Shela cheapies. Hidden away in the alleys behind the shorefront mosque, this tiny greeny-turquoise cafe does the usual stews and ugali (a staple made from maize or cassava flour, or both).”

“Particularly strong when it comes to seafood dishes and slightly set back from the waterfront, this is the best restaurant in town. Feast on the likes of fish tacos with mango salsa, ginger crab with coconut rice and such crowd pleasers as chicken and chips.”

“Seafront Cafe is situated on the seafront road of Lamu Town and is a 5 minutes-walk away from ONEWAY House. They offer lovely Swahili cuisine including sea food, samosas and fruit shakes. This is a more local and budget-friendly option. Please be aware that like most places in Lamu this restaurant does not serve alcoholic beverages. ”

“Whispers is located in Baraka House, 5 to 10 minutes walking from ONEWAY House. When you are craving a real Cappuccino, some lovely cakes, light meals or fresh juices and smoothies this is the place! Whispers hosts a lovely small backyard to sit and cool down in one of Lamu Town’s most buzzing streets. The same building also hosts Baraka Gallery which is home to a collection of beautiful pieces including tribal masks, hand-carved furniture and hand woven textiles from across Africa.”
