Beaches

Wategos is arguably the most beautiful of all the Byron Bay beaches. A protected inlet, nestled underneath the Cape Byron Lighthouse, it enjoys crystal clear waters and great surf all year round. Home to a large pod of friendly dolphins, you can often catch them surfing the waves alongside the board-riders. A great place to enjoy a beach BBQ and watch the spectacular sunsets. Also located at the base of the Lighthouse track, you can take a walk up to Byron’s highest vantage point, to spot whales in the distance or enjoy a coffee and an ice cream from the Lighthouse café.

Beautiful Clarkes Beach is home to Byron Bay’s most famous surfing location ‘The Pass’. Arguably one of Australia’s best east coast point breaks, it has been attracting surfers to the areas since the 1970’s. Hit the water with your board, swim, bodysurf or watch all the action from ‘The Pass’ lookout. What makes ‘The Pass’ such a special location is not only the world famous surf, but also its subtropical rainforest surrounds that come down to meet the ocean, the crystal clear water and the fact that it is one of the best vantage points to watch the magnificent sunsets over Mount Warning.

A long stretch of beach to the left of the Byron CBD. Majority of this beach is dog friendly, so is a great place to spend the day with the whole family. Also home to the popular surfing and snorkelling spot, known as ‘The Wreck’. The SS Wollongbar ran ashore in storms in 1921, after being mostly stripped for her parts the frame remains and has become a beautiful marine ecosystem, where you can snorkel and see turtles or on the right conditions catch a wave. There are also, numerous banks dotted all along Belongil Beach where you can often catch some surf. Belongil, is also the best place in town to watch the sun set in spectacular colours. With the sound of the local drumming circle in the background, it’s a pretty magical way to celebrate the end of a beautiful Byron Bay day.
