Neighbourhoods

Our neighbourhood is delightfully private and secluded. We are located towards the end of a peninsula that affords incredible views towards Paihia and the Bay of Islands beyond. There are paths that wiggle through the bush in front of our house but the most direct route to the water is not from our property precisely - walk a few more houses along Point Veronica Drive and you’ll see a sign for a viewpoint. Amble up to the viewpoint then you’ll see steep steps down that meet what is a beautiful coastal walk. Encounter beaches and viewpoints if you walk in either direction; right towards Opua Marina, left towards Paihia (the path goes all the way to both townships but take water!). Happy exploring!

If you’d like to get a little feel for what’s across the water absolutely take the car ferry over to Russell. Be careful in the heart of summer though as queues (particularly at checkin/out time) can be long. You cruise along the coast to the little township of Russell and just beyond it is Flagstaff Hill on Tapeka Point. The vantage point across the Bay of Islands is amazing! (Plus you can dip into Omata Estate vineyard just after the car ferry over to Russell for wood fired pizzas and a particularly yummy rose!). Also in Russell, lunch options include Hone’s for amazing pizzas abd a relaxed atmosphere in a shaded, stylish courtyard or slightly higher end is The Gables or The Duke. Soooo many options, you’re going to love this area! The Russell Beach itself is stony and rather average but I can recommend grabbing a coffee from one of the vendours along the water’s edge and then driving a few minute’s to Long Beach - white sand, endless beach, huge pohutukawas, usually very quiet, we just love it.

Food scene

Omata is a boutique vineyard on a sunny, north facing peninsular overlooking the ocean. It's so convenient to our house because you just take the very short car ferry ride from Opua and then it's a few minute's drive when you get to the other side. We love it as the gourmet platters and wood-fired pizzas are delicious, service is top notch and our children are always made to feel welcome. I can recommend their rosé but then also to take a stroll past the vines down to a little known beach.

Terra opened in late 2019 with little fanfare but it has quickly established itself as the No.1 place to dine in Paihia. The food is amazing with a great choice of meals for all the family that look incredible on the plate as well as tasting divine. If you're heading into Paihia for the evening, this will make it all the more memorable. That said, it's on the more pricey side so look elsewhere for simpler dining.
