Small but nice, professional and worth visiting. Take the opportunity to have lunch or dinner at their very good restaurant, "Vatten", with a gorgeous view. There is a nice sand beach just by the museum, ready for a swim!? You can also take a walk in the harbour.

The water way between North Sea (Gothenburg) and Lake Vänern (Vänersborg) has a water lock located in the outskirts of city Trollhättan. Three generations of water locks can be seen and the latest one is still in operation. If you are lucky you might see a big commercial ship passing through. There is a small canal museum on site and it is located in a beautiful area. Dogs are allowed. In this area Trollhättan waterfalls also is located. During summertime they release water frequently, 300,000 litres of water per second, wow!! Check out the the website. https://www.vastsverige.com/en/falls-and-locks/

Nordens Ark is an unusual Zoo that works to ensure endangered animals have a future. The auspices for the animals are large and you don’t always find all animals. Bring binoculars if you have handy or ask me and you can borrow for the day. The Zoo is open daily and is located in the forest on a ridge just by Gullmarn bay in gorgeous surroundings. In the wildlife park you’ll find wild animals, including Amur tigers, Pallas cats, wolverines, reindeer, birds and amphibians. At the Farm, you’ll find Nordic native breeds. There’s also a chance to get nearer to the animals, and even pet them in high season. Read more about this place on their website https://en.nordensark.se/visit-us/. I don’t believe you are allowed to bring dogs into the park.

Nature experience

One of the most wild an unprotected areas along the Swedish north west coast. Granite rocks, salt water waves and a lighthouse that can be seen outside the bay. A short walk about 5km but you easily spend 2-3 hours here and remember to bring the coffee basket as there’s no commercial activity. It is located one hour from Majviken and is astonishing in all weathers, just bring the right clothes. https://www.vastsverige.com/en/tanum/produkter/tjurpannan/ This tour can be combined with the rock carvings in Vitlycke Museum, read more under “Museums”.

Kalvön is located in Kalvöfjorden, between Orust and Bokenäset, some 30 minutes drive from Majviken. With the exception of a few holiday homes, the island is completely undeveloped. Here you are met by a heavily hilly terrain and steep cliffs. The highest altitudes are at almost 100 meters above sea level. Valleys with easy paths still make large parts of the island easily accessible. Kalvön is almost completely forested, in sheltered locations mostly spruce and on the heights sparsely growing marble. The forest must be left to free development, which provides conditions for a rich flora to survive. The rich bird life also benefits, which here is representative of old coniferous forest. Botanically valuable is the herb flora in a spruce stand in a shady location on the north side. Outdoor activities and swimming The good beaches at Skänklinge uddar, Mjölkevik, Storebukt and Djupvik attract most visitors, although the interior of the island also offers walking tours. Footbridge connects the island with Orreviksnäset on Bokenäs.

A top class restaurant in a old style beautiful house that dates back to late 19th century. This place has got several awards and is a bit expensive, but top quality with god wines. You are also allowed to bring your dog inside if it is not a too lively one. The owner has an old lady flatcoated retriever. Nice fishing villages & harbours

There are many small fishing villages in the county of Bohuslän, on the north west coast. I love almost all of them, but here I’ve gathered some favourites.
An old typical Bohuslän county fishing village. Mollösund has a history going back to the 16th century. During periods in history when there was great amounts of herring the village was rich, a bit like “Klondike”, but today the main economy is driven by tourism. Quite busy and lots of tourists and boats in the summer, but very silent and quite other parts of the year. The level of commercial activity such as restaurants and other service vary greatly over the year. There are many nice places on Orust island, that by the way is Sweden’s third largest island and of the same size as Barbados.

Probably one of the most well known fishing villages in Bohuslän. There’s a long pier with many restaurants and shops along the secluded harbour. Very busy during summer and quite in other times of the year. There are many things to do here and I’m sure you can find lot of information about Smögen and decide what you like to do. If you have time and the tiny ferry is in operation it is possible to take a short boat trip to Hållö Island just outside Smögen. It is a large lighthouse on this island. http://www.hallofarjan.se/ Also check out section "Nature Tours" in this guidebook where I describe the walking paths at "Hästen" area in western parts of Smögen.

Walking paths around the cottage in Majviken. Check out the schematic map on one of the pictures. 1. Just a short walk down to the gravel beach on the peninsula. It is possible to walk around the whole peninsula but at one spot there is a 1m cliff to pass by and you need to be a bit careful. Facing north there’s a good viewpoint to see the whole fjord north. You can also find good fishing spots here. 2. Go back from the cottage on the small gravelled road and take to the left on the path. Follow the path on the other side of the field al the way to the sea. It is a beautiful small fire site and nice place especially during the summer, when the sunset can be amazing here. If you are lucky you can see a seal resting on the underwater stones some 100 m north of the beach. 3. A trekking path about 4-5 km that follow the coastline south and then a steep section taking you into the forest and in a circle back to camp Sparreviken. The tour takes about 1-1,5 hour. Start by following the gravel road back and then take right, follow the road through Camp Sparreviken pass by the small “harbour” up the hill and thereafter across a large open field. Then you just follow the yellow/red markings that is visible along the path. 4. Is a beautiful viewpoint as a short detour from path 3. You can see the whole fjord north and the view over the cottage and main building. In the other picture you can see marked red gravel roads/paths that is suitale for longer walks or running/trail. Just ask for more details.
