Food scene

An Italian friend once told me that Italian’s only need Italian food, and nothing else. After eating at Arte Bianca, you might agree with him. Serving mouth-watering pizzas and Italian specialties, Arte Bianca will entice your senses and leave you happily stuffed to the brim – just don’t forget to leave room for a piece of chocolate cake! The restaurant is owned by Aljezur-Italians and has two locations – one in Vale da Telha at the Apartments (just down the street from Casa Zuza) and one on main street in Aljezur town. Both offer takeout pizzas along with a full sit-down menu. A bonus for parents – the Vale da Telha location has a small playground and plenty of outdoor seating for families with energetic littles.

Peru is often lauded for its outstanding cuisine, so we’re lucky to get a bit of Peruvian magic right here in the Algarve. La Preferida is an authentic Peruvian restaurant tucked away on side street in Vale da Telha. Owned by a Peruvian family who go out of their way to make sure you’re feeling pampered and at home, La Preferida offers great wine and short menu packed with flavorful dishes. Enjoy a refreshing Ceviche or some home-style Peruvian Criollo. You can even get your hands on a handcrafted Pisco Sour if you ask nicely ;). La Preferida has indoor-outdoor seating, rustic-design and is excellent for a family dinner or a romantic night out.

This contemporary Mediterranean restaurant is located 8km out of town on the road towards Lagos, but the ever-packed parking lot will tip you off to Gulli Bistro’s excellent reputation. Gulli’s serves innovative Mediterranean dishes using high-quality, locally sourced ingredients. Make a reservation and put on a nice shirt – Gulli’s may look like any other Portuguese restaurant from the outside, but inside it’s got a contemporary decor and the high-quality service fitting of a high-end eatery. Families might opt for the spacious outdoor balcony where kids have space to play before the food arrives.

With a toes in the sand location on Monte Clérigo beach, O Sargo isn’t just the winner for best location of any restaurant in Aljezur – this ocean-front joint also serves incredible seafood, creamy risottos and contemporary concoctions to make your taste buds smile. Enjoy with a glass of wine on the outdoor patio (there are heaters for the shoulder seasons), or in the cozy indoor space while the waves crash below. O Sargo hosts live music regularly during the summer, and is a frequent site for weddings, so keep onto their facebook page for events and closings due to private parties.

The go-to lunch spot at Arrifana beach, SeaYou café has a host of healthy-food options for surfers and sunbathers alike. Just north of Aljezur proper is the small town of Rogil, with one standout café – Pão de Rogil. Potentially the only modern-looking establishment in town, Pão de Rogil could easily be located in Lisbon, with it’s contemporary design and menu. The baked goods however, are all handmade with love and care at this locally owned-and-operated bakery, which beyond serving delicious toasties and addictive cookies, sells fresh loaves of rustic bread that can be purchased in house or at supermarkets around the area.

Surfing

If you’re looking to hang out in Surfer’s paradise, Arrifana is the place for you. This 500-meter stretch of sand is perfect for learners, long boarders and when the swell hits, riding massive, peeling right-handers off the left corner. Surfer Today’s calls it one of the Most Beautiful Surf Beaches in the World, and we couldn’t agree more.

The word has gotten out about the Algarve’s best-kept secret. Praia Amoreira, a once local’s only favorite, was recently named “The Perfect Beach” by The Times UK, who went as far to call this beauty “The Best Beach in Europe.” Amoreira beach is a blissful escape from the normal Algarve crowds, and we agree that it has all the makings of a perfect beach. When the wind drops down and the swell is smaller, Praia da Amoreira is a surfer’s paradise. You can jump in the river and it’ll pull you to the outside like a conveyer belt to clean, hollow peaks – the faster sections are especially popular with locals. While Praia da Amoreira is known for it’s currents and swells, it’s also one of the most kid-friendly beaches in the Algarve, thanks to the lovely Aljezur river which flows across a wide stretch of sand. With fewer crowds than the better known beaches, there’s always space for families to camp out along the fresh water and relax while the little ones play in the crystal clear water.
