Sightseeing

The famous route between Settle and Carlisle travels through some of England's most spectacular countryside. From Settle to Appleby the countryside is of the Yorkshire Dales and start of the Eden Valley. North of Appleby the countryside turns more lush as the railway travels through the vale of Eden, with the Pennines to the East and Lake District to the west. Carlisle makes for a fascinating visit, rich in history and buzzing with shops. There are steam trains that run up the route but the main service is operated by diesel sprinter trains - not the most glamorous but the views from the windows are the same. There are about 6 trains a day each way. For further information on train times and fares, walks, events and guides visit the website on settle-carlisle.co.uk

A lovely walk from Settle is along the river Ribble to Stainforth. Its about 2 miles from Settle and Stainforth Force is a beautiful waterfall set near Knight Stainforth campsite. A short walk up the road from the old bridge is the campsite office and lovely cafe.

Pen y Ghent is part of the famous 3 peaks of Yorkshire walk but makes a lovely walk in its own right. Setting off from Horton or from the road towards Halton Gill, Pen y Ghent is a good challenge for any walker but definitely worth it. On a good day the views from the top are spectacular. On most weekends though expect a lot of company at the top, the 3 peaks are getting very popular!
