Food & Drink

Great food and an ever changing selection of beers are available in this traditional local pub, it’s a short walk up a steep hill from Dalemore Cottage and a little bit further from Swallow Barn, but worth the effort and downhill on the way home. T: 01538 304232

Nice little local pub about 3.5 miles from Butterton, we have had mixed reviews on the food lately, probably a good stop off on a walk rather than a dinner venue. Food served either in the fresh air with great views or in the cosy pub with warm fires and dripping dogs.

A 10 minute drive or 4 mile walk to Hulme End, the ever popular Manifold Inn is at the end of the Manifold Way or in the middle if you make Hulme End part of a moderate circular walk from Butterton. They offer bar food and a smarter dinning room option we haven’t eaten there for a while but it has been a reliable favourite in the past. T: 01298 84537

The George has a well earned reputation for great food, set on the village green in middle of the picturesque village of Alstonfield a sharp walk up the hill from popular Dove Dale. Their lunch menu is great for walkers and they offer fine dinning in the restaurant in the evening, with prices to match. T: 01335 310205

The Great Outdoors

We live here because of our love for being out in the hills, we have lots of maps and routes we can share with you, these are just a few of the local highlights.
Thor's Cave (also known as Thor's House Cavern and Thyrsis's Cave) is a natural cavern less than an hours walk from Butterton on the Manifold Way. It’s well worth a visit to the cave entrance, a symmetrical arch 7.5 metres wide and 10 metres high, which is prominently visible from the valley bottom below, it can be reached by a steep stepped path from the Manifold Way. The cave is a popular tourist spot, with stunning views over the Manifold Valley. There is a second entrance is known as the "West Window", below which is a second cave, Thor's Fissure Cavern. It is possible to drive down to Wetton Mill and walk along the river to the cave which is an easy 15 minute stroll.

We love it up here, the views are spectacular and the terrain offers a bit of challenge. Walk run or climb, the Roaches are a popular destination with the outdoor set. About a 20 minute drive from Butterton.

Another place to visit on the Manifold Way, Beeston Tor is a popular limestone climbing spot, but you don’t need to climb to appreciate this stunning natural crag, the views are lovely and there are a set of stepping stones across the river, pot luck whether they are passable.

The Manifold Way is either a short drive down the hill out of Butterton towards Wetton or a 20 minute walk down hill to Wetton Mill Tea room, but remember you have to walk back up. It offers even low level walking, biking or running and is a great choice for keeping out of the wind on inclement days. It follows the path of the fascinating;g Manifold river which can disappear over night if the water level drops as it all cascades into the caverns and tunnels underground that are a legacy of the mining in the area. The Manifold Way is the disused Manifold light railway and if you follow it to Hulme End you can read all about the history over a cup of tea and a piece of cake or even an exceptional bacon sandwich at the station cafe.

Dovedale is a famous and very popular walk alongside the river Dove, it has a well kept even path and is popular for a reason. If you like to get off the well walked paths we can point you towards a couple of side routes which are a bit more rugged and equally pretty, such as Wolfscote Dale, Biggin Dale & Nettly know.

5 miles from Butterton, Hartington is a thriving village with good pubs, the Charles. Cotton and the Devonshire Arms, it has a post office, great deli style village stores, country store and the famous Hartington cheese factory. They sell an exceptional range of local and not so local cheeses and all the necessary bits and pieces to go with. Hartington is also very popular start point for some beautiful walks through Beresford Dale or one of our favourite road run routes, to Pilsbury up and over and back through Longdale, or across the middle for a stunning off road route.

Bike Hire

There are a few places to hire bikes near us. Waterhouse’s is the nearest, I’m not sure how broad their selection is. www.watersideholidaycottagesuk.co.uk/bike-hire/ The bike barn in Ashbourne seems a bit more advanced. www.thebikebarnashbourne.co.uk/cycle-hire And this one seems to do multi day hire www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/visiting/cycle/cycle-hire-centres/ashbourne
