Lovely place to take a picnic, let the kids run wild whilst supervising from a distance on your deckchair and glass of something cold in hand.
Have a look around to discover the play areas for younger children, rope walks, golf course and sensory gardens. You could easily spend half a day here and not get bored. Be warned. It gets busy at weekends.

Vivary Park
Upper High StreetLovely place to take a picnic, let the kids run wild whilst supervising from a distance on your deckchair and glass of something cold in hand.
Have a look around to discover the play areas for younger children, rope walks, golf course and sensory gardens. You could easily spend half a day here and not get bored. Be warned. It gets busy at weekends.
Lots of places to access the canal and there are areas where the river Tone runs alongside it. Great for exploring and walking off a large meal or working up an appetite for one. Watch out for the cyclists though!

Great place to park up and discover the delights of the Quantock hills. There is much to explore and many places to eat. Try one of the village pubs that you will pass by.
Caution. Do not under any circumstances feed the ponies. They get very aggressive and separate you from your group if you have apples. We learned this from experience and was quite scary.

This is an amazing place to explore. The park is great for teenagers and young ones alike. There are lovely opportunities for wandering on your own along the river or in groups with living buildings and unusual features. Best place to park is Tesco’s but be sure to move within the time allowed. Also gives you the opportunity to buy your picnic there. Lots of fun to be had and a local favourite that many visitors may miss. It is also a short walk to the town centre

Food scene
A great pub with good selection of real ales as well as the usual favourites. Free coffee refills and good value food that tastes great. It is a busy, lively environment but plenty of seating

Safe place
Taunton is the county town for Somerset but still has that relaxed, friendly feeling that is sometimes lost in bigger cities. People are usually very friendly and helpful. There are a few idiots around but thankfully they are easy to spot. Be sensible and don’t leave things visible in the car (usual advice) and you will enjoy your stay. There is excellent provision for homeless people in the town so those begging are usually doing it because they choose to. Don’t be tempted to give money as it is not helpful for them

Quicker to walk than wait for the bus
Walking into the town is a relaxing 15 minute walk. Much quicker than waiting for the buses that are notorious for being late or not turning up at all. However the return trip tends to be more reliable. For parking, many supermarkets allow you to park for 1.5-2 hours for free but don’t overstay as the fines are excessive.

Shops to get the essentials
Poundland is good for water, essentials and those things you forgot. The local Co-op shop is good value for money and has excellent fresh products reduced in price on a Friday evening. If you go to the cities, Exeter or Bath, use the park and ride. So much easier, cheaper, less hassle and you get to see more of the sights
