I took an airplane from Shanghai to Jing De Zheng to see where the world famous Chinese ceramics come from. However you don't need to travel more than 2 big blocks because SPIN ceramics (also made in Jing De Zheng) have their beautiful Shanghai gallery and showroom located very close to our apartment. SPIN have made it big in America and have a gallery in New York but the NY prices can be as much as 4 times higher than in China.

There is a new Piling Palang store located in the Shanghai Centre just outside the Little Laundry cafe. (The Shanghai Centre is one block further west on Nanjing road - exit the building and turn left).

Try Li Li for knitted cashmere on the 3rd floor, booth number 306.
Or Qian Jin Xiang on the 2nd floor, booth number 209 for liberty prints.
Or Laura on the 2nd floor, booth number 240 for delightful cotton and cotton/silk fabric and tailoring. She speaks excellent English.
If you really insist on going to YuYuan Gardens (over rated & v. busy in my opinion) these markets are walking distance from YuYuan Gardens.

They roast their own coffee, they have crafted their own range of coffee based sodas and they make their own bagels (in their sister shop called Bang Bang Bagels). In my opinion this is the best coffee shop in Shanghai. Be warned - it can get crowded.

My friend Niko discovered he couldn't buy a good kebab in Shanghai. Instead of complaining he saw an opportunity and started a chain of kebab shops. His closest outlet in only about 100 meters north, just off Shaanxi. I think you could almost see it from the Nanjing road street bedroom window (in winter when the plane trees are without leaves).
I recommend the meal pack with EXTRA MEAT (because the Chinese serving size is a little bit smaller than the typical Aussie kebab).

My friend Peter has since started a new Favorita Wine Bar that is much closer to the AirBnB apartment. It is located 1315 Xin Zha Road. Almost on the corner with Shaanxi. Walk north on Shanxi and turn left at the 3rd intersection. I'd estimate it is about a 500 m walk.
They do good simple Italian food, great pizza, ultra fresh lobsters and they have an extensive selection of excellent Italian red wines.

Well worth the 1 km walk. Take your lunch or a coffee and enjoy people watching. Inside the park is the Natural History Museum. Also a great place to aim for if you are a runner.

To get there take the route 71 trolley bus that runs under the Yan An elevated road to its terminus on the Bund (RMB 2 per person). Then cross the road to the river's edge and take a ferry (RMB 2 per person) to the other side of the river. Then follow your nose until you get to the base of the Dragon's Tail (affectionate name for the shanghai Tower)
