This hotel has been serving Ballarat since the goldrushes and is an iconic building and ammenity of Ballarat's artistic and cultural precinct of Lydiard Street.
Lunchtime and evening set menu deals offer savings, as do Lydiard St Ghost Walk with Eerie Tours, or Her Majesty's Theatre packages!

Pizzas are fantastic, but my absolute favourite and highly recommended dishes include the freshly cooked flounder, spaghetti marinara, or with mud crabs, or calimari. Meat loving friends say their steaks and veal are impressive too!
For desert, don't miss John's specialty, the utterly sublime tiramisu, made fresh daily to his family's secret traditional recipe.

This is not a typical Australian Japanese restaurant, but more like eating in a fine restaurant in Japan itself.
Friday and Saturday evenings only offer excellent set menus, with vegetarian and non vegetarian options. Other nights are a la carte or set menu options.
Lunchtime offers bento boxes and more.
They even can match sakes to each course, or try indulge in a flight of tastings as an apperitif, serve Japanese fruit based wines or fine Australian ones.
If you love Japanese food, don't miss Kambei if you can avoid it; If you have never tried it, this is the ultimate place to start. The wonderful complex menu extends way beyond just sushi and sashimi, to utterly authentic Japanese fine dining!

Red Bird Cafe, two local bakeries, two Chinese restaurants and more recently a kebab shop all grace this busy shopping strip, where fresh fruit, fish and meat can be obtained without setting foot in a supermarket. There is an excellent local chemist and newsagents, as well as 'All Sorts of Things', for gifts!
Local second hand stores are also plentiful for clothes, furniture and retro bargains!

Lake Wendouree, formally Yuilles Swamp, was created in the 1860s as Ballarat's original water supply.
It is a bird sanctuary providing rich aquatic habitat for some of the rarest birds in Victoria, including Freckled, Blue Billed and Musk Ducks, Night Herons, Little Rails, Crested Grebe, sacred Ibis and the enigmatic Black Swans.
Glorious views across the lake to Mt Warrenheip and Bunninyong, along with sometimes wonderful reflections add to the enjoyment of walking , cycling or even fishing for redfin, and rainbow trout.

The Ballarat Art Gallery has in its permanent collection, one of the most extensive collections of Australian Impressionist Art, by the Heidelberg School of artists in the country.
It has a fabulous collection of works by the famous Lindsay Family, as well as colonial and goldfields art.
Visiting exhibitions are regular and of a high quality. The Ballarat Gallery is a key venue of the Ballarat Photo Bienalle! Interior architecture is impressive too and has been carefully restored to the glory of its golden heritage, when Ballarat was one of the richest towns in the world!
