This French patisserie run by a Japanese family is quintessential French with the finest, best croissants and brioche outside of Paris. A tiny spot with just a few tables, but get there by 9am or the best pastries and breads are gone. A little known secret just a 15 min walk from our house or a 2 min drive. Great coffee too! Also a small selection of great french lunch sandwiches.

Falafel World is our little local secret joint for the best falafel around. This long-time family run place is no beauty but it's wonderful and fresh and filling, and they treat you like family. Way better than all the other Falafel places in the neighborhood! 5 min walk from our place on Bloor.

This is my favorite restaurant in Toronto. Not super close to our house, but the service is impeccable and the pizza and wine just perfect. They always cheer me up, even if I'm shoved into a corner table on a crowded night and had to wait 15 minutes to get in.

This place is fairly new and is probably my second favorite restaurant now in Toronto. Cuban fritas and drinks - basically cool little plates and sandwiches, delicious cocktails. So yummy! Right next door to the cool Revue Cinema which makes a great date night together. 15 min drive from our house or 25 min via public transport, in the great strolling neighborhood of Roncesvalles.

This is the smaller, gentler dog park we drive to with our pooch when we have to get him off leash. About 10 min drive away. The Dog park is in the back of the small park, off Indian Grove Rd. High Park also has a dog park, across the road from its Grenadier Restaurant but it can be intense and crowded with 50+ dogs at a time.

Entertainment & Activities

This is the best and most local independent cinema around our area of Toronto. A 15 min drive or a 25 minute commute via subway and short streetcar ride in the great neighborhood of Roncesvalles. Be sure to check their listings for an eclectic mix of old, new, restored and special. Eat before or after at the wonderful La Cubana just a few doors down.

Sightseeing

This is the more funky, bohemian neighborhood a short bus ride, even shorter drive, or a 30 minute stroll north of our slightly more gentrified neighborhood. It's a non tourist area and super for strolling, shopping and eating, all along Dundas Ave from about Runnymede to Keele. Lots of old Victorian houses off the main drag. Axis is a good restaurant with often live music on Fri/Sat, and Crema Coffee is a favorite. For shopping for gifts, jewelry and European-sourced boutique clothing, I love Beau and the Bauble. Ice Cream in the Junction is an old fashioned cones and candy place.

Drinks & Nightlife

Hugh's Room is one of the best and longest gem little music venues in Toronto. Just a 15 min drive from our house or a short subway ride, is this fabulous little spot. Every night they have a great band of some kind, many varieties from folk, jazz, alternative, etc. Great for drinks, dinner, etc. A little off the beaten path, and much smaller than bigger more touristy Toronto music venues.
