Parks & Nature

Great views, groves of old pohutukawa, grassy picnic areas, and meandering stepped paths down to white sand beaches and sculpted rock formations. Shakespeare Cliff Reserve commemorates Captain Cook’s observations, made nearby, of the transit of Mercury in Nov. 1769. For readers not familiar with NZ's history: Cook was a British explorer, navigator and Naval Captain who, in the late 1700s, made 3 voyages to the Pacific, during which he recorded the first circumnavigation of New Zealand. (though this is a pretty Euro-centric snippet of history and it'd also be worth reading further on the much earlier Maori migrations across the Pacific and discovery and settlement of Aotearoa New Zealand)

Hahei's own beautiful beach (airbnb's system won't allow me to put this pin on the actual beach). In summer be sure to check out the locals' boat-launching tractors lined up on the sand at the southern end near Wigmore Stream. And some history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hahei "The name of the settlement of Hahei is derived from the Māori name for Mercury Bay, Te-Whanganui-A-Hei, or "The Great Bay of Hei". According to tradition, Hei was one of three brothers who arrived in New Zealand with Kupe. With his family he settled in the area of Oahei, which is now Hahei, and they became the ancestors of the Ngati Hei people..

Beautiful undeveloped beach surrounded by dense native bush. Walk across the stream at the west end of Whangapoua Beach and follow the coast to the marked path over the headland to New Chums. The Whangapoua side is stony and can be hard going but it is totally worth it.

At the end of Pa Road take the short walk to the headland and see the remnants of two old Maori Pa sites (for overseas guests, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C4%81). The lines of the original terraces and defensive moat are still visible on the headland. Steep cliffs here (so take care) but awesome views! (airbnb's system won't allow me to put this pin on the actual headland reserve)

Nice 40 minute walk through pretty native bush to a grove of kauri trees with a boardwalk running through it. (please stay on the path to help protect the kauri from a pathogen that is killing them)
