Shopping

Saturday there is an excellent farmer's market with fresh produce, meats, fish, cheeses, cafe, local beers, and wines. There are international food vendors and crafts too. There is entertainment- live music, too. Great place to be from about 8:00am to 1:00pm. It's right on the water, by the ferry. There are small stores there all week for fresh local foods, plus a liquor store.

This is actually a gallery/ restaurant, with Picnic being the restaurant and Dart being the gallery. Neat little place, kinda trendy. Food is medium-priced, made by the owner/chef. There is literally just the server and the chef there, and it's a cool, friendly vibe. Good place to go for a glass of wine, too.

A multi-vendor shared space concept: New Scotland Yard cafe, Taz record store (yes, vinyl) and Elk's Hair salon. Hip, but super friendly. Owned by Hali-famous Canadian rocker Joel Plaskett, there is also the New Scotland Yard recording studio in the back building, so you never know who might run into. Occasional in-store shows. Good coffee and baked goods. Peruse the vinyl collection as you sip your fave. Get your hair cut (book ahead!) at Elk's, both men's and women's.

The coffee is roasted onsite, and the owner is a coffee fanatic. The bakery part uses more butter in one croissant than you might otherwise eat in a month. This is not your typical light flaky french fair- these croissants are the size of half your head, and ridiculously decadent and, ummm. really good. As are the other baked goods. Get in line with the distance runners as they line up for their post-run treats.

Jacob's Lounge is more basic- not trendy, it has the usual VLTs, etc but the people are really nice, and I hear the food is solid and reasonable (Middle Eastern and Canadian fare). My neighbour said it is the best pizza he's had in Dartmouth, and that's saying something. They are also really supportive of the indie music scene, and bands play in the lower bar- a little venue where you can often catch indie or punk bands. Check their FB page to see if anyone is playing.

Hip bar and restaurant, the food is good, the staff friendly, and they really know their beer. They have partnered with North Brewing, a local micro-brewery so that downstairs you can get retail beer, and upstairs is the bar/restaurant. There is a patio out back in the summer. This is Nova Scotia, so you can go alone, and you will meet people pretty quickly.

This is an old school pub. Definitely a local watering hole- all kinds of people and ages. Friendly. Live music (usually a duo or trio, often Celtic). Awesome deck up top overlooking the harbour (you may need to ask how to get up there). Decent enough pub food. Family-friendly by day, turns into a pub/bar at night. Trivia nights, too.

Finally got there for breakfast. Delicious! Reasonably priced, good portion size. If you are a big eater, order two, but one is certainly fine. Very tasty, good selection of both sweet and savoury crepes, great coffee. Welcoming staff.

Medium-high prices, but worth every penny and more. The food is always really good. Never had a bad meal. The service is excellent. When we want a good meal, 9/10 this is where we go. They also do a wicked brunch on the weekends. They do not take reservations so you may have to wait a bit, but totally worth the wait.

Lots of food, really reasonable. Mostly Middle Eastern (Roy, the owner, is Syrian) but also burgers, etc. Vegan friendly, too. I've been a client for about 15 years- Roy is a lovely guy and the food is delicious. Great brunches, and arguably the best falafal in town. You will want some gum or mints for afterward...

If you like original live rock and indie music, this is the place for you. The Halifax area has a huge music scene (101 brand new bands last year alone), much of which is original. This venue hosts more folk- singer/songwriter style. It was started by MuchMusic's Mike Campbell as a listening room. The sounds system is wired through the ceiling, so sound is always good. Many of Canada's top singer-songwriters have played here because it accords musicians respect. It serves food, and the restaurant is certainly acceptable.

Parks & Nature

15 minute drive from the house, this is a beautiful sandy ocean beach. While the public, supervised beach part is nice, I usually head to the end toward the Salt Marshes. Less people, and when the tide is out, there is lovely flat sand. Watch the current in the channel- it can be deceptively strong depending on the die and where you are, so pay attention to people and creatures who aren't strong swimmers, and test it first.

This park is a combo of walking trails and off-leash dog park. The areas are marked. It is actually a really big park, and has many trails, and covers two lakes. There is an interpretive centre at one part (Fairbanks), you can rent canoes too and paddle the canal and lakes. There is a small restaurant. There is a campground, too. The dog park also has its own beach area. Good for running. Some trails are pretty unused and you are running through forest. Beautiful, but women should be smart- there have been a couple of assaults. Women running solo should stick to the main trails, which are well-used. (Kind of like not walking down a dark alley by yourself anywhere in the world at night).

Another wicked beach- check the tides because much of the beach disappears at high tide, but when the tides go out there's lots of sand. Big surf spot- yo can take lessons. Nice rollers. There are bathrooms, change rooms, a tea room near by. Supervised beach area, too.

Stunning beach. White sand. Not much in terms of amenities (I think they were building some stuff when I was last out there) but one of the prettiest in the area. Take a picnic. A favourite of the paragliders.

Tiny little lake hidden at the top of the hill, a 4 minute walk from the house, it is cared for by a local community group. Fantastic swimming, and a pretty walk. You can walk around it- at one point you cut through a neighbourhood but it circles around- in about 45 minutes. Nice place for a short run.

Very pretty park, with ducks, geese, osprey and the occasional eagle. They ask that you please not feed the waterfowl- it's actually quite bad for them (especially bread). Great place for a walk, hangout, picnic. Nice gardens, much of it tended by local community. On the weekends, you may find music happening at the small bandshell.

Everything Else

A working fishing wharf, you can get fresh fish, take a tender to McNab's Island (very pretty), peruse the little gift shops, grab an ice cream, and eat decent fish and chips. A bit touristy but still worth a visit! It's a mix of old school fishing and crafts.

Right on the waterfront looking across to Halifax, attached to the ferry terminal and the little shopping area, it's an awesome place to relax and watch the boats go by.
