Food Scene

One of the best kept secrets of Montreal food scene: Fous Desserts is where you can find the best croissants in Montreal. Officially. There is actually a competition for best croissants and Fous Desserts holds numerous titles. See for yourself. A cute little cafe offers croissants made with regular flour or biological flour. There are also chocolate and almond croissants to try and many other pastries like brioches and apple pastries. And that is not all. If you are looking for excellent gelato, Fous Desserts is the place to go. They produce their gelato and sorbet in house, it is always fresh and comes in delicious flavours. My favourite are blackberry and raspberry.

The best poutine in Montreal! La Banquise is a perfect stop for a late night dinner or early morning breakfast because they are open 24/7. There's usually a lineup, but don't despair: La Banquise's servers are fast and you'll be served in no time. There's a patio in the summertime but they don't serve alcohol there.

This tiny bakery makes croissants and other delicious baked goods on the spot. They are so popular that there is a line up out the door most of the time. Try almond croissant, or amazing Breton pastry called Kouign Amman. This pastry is very hard to find in Canada and they make it to perfection. They also serve sandwiches, coffee, juice and soup.

There are two types of bagels: New York style and Montreal. In Montreal there are two bagel houses that started the tradition. St. Viateur is my favourite bagel place, chevy, deliciously sweet, and great flavours, freshly baked 24/7.

Drinks & Nightlife

If you like bier, or if you like hip places this is hands down Montreal's best Microbrewery. They have a LARGE selection of bier, constantly changing their line up. They have biers tasting like coffee or chocolate or just plain simple lager and anything in between. Yes, there are deep dark ryes, too as well as red bier and many other that I haven't tried yet. Dieu du Ciel is where the locals hang out, especially local artists and students. The place is open late and you'll be lucky to get a table. Besides bier there is also some tasty pub fare if you're feeling hungry.

Parks & Nature

Montreal's most beautiful park in my opinion is great for a Sunday picnic. Bring a blanket, buy a baguette and some local cheese in one of the local bakeries and fromageries and relax. You can also walk or bike, enjoy the fountain, the ponds or even catch and outdoor theatre show in the summer.

It is one of the oldest settlements in Canada and a rare place to see beluga whales in a river!!! How cool is that?! There are also blue whales, humpbacks, seals and other large sea animals to see on a whale watching tour. It's possible to book expeditions leaving from Montreal and Quebec City.

Eastern Townships is an area about 1 hour away from Montreal by car. Local roads pass small villages and farms, ideal for stopping by for tasting and purchasing fresh cheese, apple cider or maple syrup. The best time to visit is in the fall, when colourful leaves turn the landscape to a magical display of red and orange colours.

Entertainment & Activities

Place des Arts is an entertainment complex with many indoor theatres. You can see concerts (from classical to pop), theatre shows, dance performances and opera. However, Place des Arts is also a large open area outside the venues. An enormous square usually has something going on year round. World famous Montreal Jazz Festival happens here, Formula 1 parties and improvised events like street performances. Usually there are also interactive installations installed on the square. Walk around the square at day or night time and there will always be something to discover, watch and play with.

Habitat 67 is an iconic Montreal sight and a piece of Montreal's history. The unusual neighbourhood was build for the World Expo hosted by Montreal in 1967. The Expo plays a huge part in Quebecois history. Charles de Gaule visited the Expo and expressed support for Quebecois independence in his speech. This caused a spike in nationalist movements leading to a referendum on independence, implementation of language and culture protection laws and sadly also flight of capital and investment from Montreal.

Tohu offers world's best circus shows. Some of them are Canadian and many are touring groups from around the world. In May they also present two shows of graduating up and coming circus artists and these shows are a bargain. One gets to see some of the best circus talent in the world for great prices.

This is one of my favourite private galleries in Montreal. They showcase amazing artists, well worth purchasing for a private art collection. The owner of the gallery is a very nice person, super easy to talk too and he will gladly recommend a piece of art and agree on a price plan suited for every customer.
