I just love the vibe of this dynamic third wave coffee shop within walking distance, owned by a young hard working couple. They offer 49th parallel coffees as well as vegan muffins and other bakery delights in a modern decor. Good for a break or to start the day; free and fast Wi-Fi. Gets pretty busy on weekends!

I'm a big fan of Japanese food, and this typical Izakaya offers it all, a great selection of Japanese tapas style entrées and a nice list of sakés, all in a true to form atmosphere and decor. A must if you like these types of establishments!

Bagels baked fresh daily in their gigantic brick fire oven. You've heard of NYC bagels, maybe even tried them... but make no mistakes... Montreal is the home of the tried and true bagel (accept no substitute). Don't believe me? Try this place for take-out or sit-down bagel sandwiches to die for (also salads and soups).

So typically north american, and just around the corner, this greasy spoon with an open kitchen right there as you enter invites you to discover a variety of greek, north american, québecois, italian, chinese, etc. fares. Oh, and pizzas, of course. I'm a big fan of their "Special Mont-Royal" subway sandwich (with Montreal smoked meat), and believe me, unless you have a monster of an appetite, the 7 inch version will satisfy your appetite! Oh! They also serve breakfast all day...!!!

Schwartz's is to Smoked Meat sandwiches what Céline Dion is to Québec pop / diva music. And she owns the place! Seriously, amongst Montreal staple foods, the smoked meat sandwich is a must. Go there, or anywhere else, and order a medium (lean is too dry, and fat, well, I'll let you imagine) sandwich with French fries and a pickle. Iconic goodness.

So hipster, young/student crowd (McGill University is not so far), good coffee (of course) and also a selection of breakfast offerings and sandwiches to please all palates whether for breakfast or lunch. Breakfast at its finest in a splendid decor. Whether the PB&J stuffed pain doré (French toast) or the infamous fried chicken on a waffle, this place will delight your palate. Other examples include the Benny Mac, a twist on the old eggs benedict recipe... with pulled pork and sitting on a Mac & Cheese fritter instead of the staple English muffin. I could go on and on... The dynamic duo who owns this place will satisfy your tastebuds like no other and make you feel like kings and queens, all at a reasonable price, including the wine list. Offering a twist on Spanish tapas, with both a Moroccan (him) and Scottish (her) influence, this place keeps impressing me with a simple, well executed formula, over and over again. Iconic in Montreal, stylish French bistro, offering the same classics since forever! It's like being in Paris, minus the attitude (and even sometimes attitude included). When a formula works, why change it? I've also been told they make the best over easy eggs for brunch. You'll probably see me trying them one day! Their kitchen is open late. Reservations required most time of day, even late at night.

This hidden gem provides some of the best breakfasts I've been lucky enough to discover anywhere on this planet. OK, that might be a bit of an hyperbole, but truly, they go out of their way to provide a twist on classics, using farm/fresh ingredients. To wit: their breakfast sandwich. It's monstrously good! This is NOT a place where you'll see a lot of tourists. It's a Montrealer's secret! They get quite busy (that's what happens when you're that good) but if you're lucky enough to be here when the weather permits it, they also have a nice terrasse so you can enjoy dining outside.

In my opinion, the best burgers in Montreal. You can either enjoy their current creations, which are seasonal, or go with one of their classics. If you prefer, make your own from scratch. Once you've chosen with or without bacon and cheese, they'll top it all off to your liking at no extra charge! They also have good caesar salad, French fries and poutine. Bring an empty stomach...

Sometimes, nothing beats North American style Chinese food. You don't have to be in an American sitcom to enjoy Chinese food take-away. Just walk to this place, take a look at their menu, and enjoy 10% off when you get take-away instead of delivery. Plus, you'll be sure you get your food quickly and piping hot! It's one of my guilty pleasure, for sure ! Should you decide to stay there and have a sit-down meal in the restaurant, it doesn't offer the most fantastic decor or atmosphere, but it is a BYOB, and the SAQ Express nearby is very convenient to pick up some wine or beer, according to taste.

Attention foodies! You have a special occasion to celebrate? You're looking for something upscale? This high end restaurant is pricey... (90$ + tx and service for the 8 course meal), but you get what you pay for in one of Montreal's new shining stars headed by a young creative chef. Open kitchen, fixed menu (chef decides courses), menu varies seasonally. But simply put: wow! Don't forget to make a reservation at least 48 hours in advance, and bon appétit!

It's a BYOB and there's a SAQ (liquor store) right across the street... What more could you ask for? L'Académie has been around... well... forever! The food is good and the prices a little high (though overall if you bring a bottle of wine, think of how much you're saving by buying it yourself). That's typical of BYOBs, at least in Montreal. Vegan Sushi? Yes!!! And to die for! I haven't visited their new location (and so sad they moved, they were just a couple of blocks away, formerly!), but I can vouch for their food. Well, this place is just exceptional. It's a little bit out of the ways, but with specialties like the "cornicochon", a sushi of steak tartare with cream cheese on a fried pickle piece, the owner as earned a reputation in the inventive sushi world. Sightseeing

Weather permitting, this is the perfect spot to enjoy a view of Montreal from the Mountain (Mont-Royal), accessible either by car or, should you have what it takes, from the end of de la Montagne street, downtown, climbing the stairs! Don't forget to take a peek inside the old Chalet there... the architecture is quite something, squirrel included (on the interior beams)!

No visit to Montreal is complete without seeing Notre-Dame basilica, inside and out. The fine wood carvings and 18 carat gold leaves decorated ceilings are a must-see. Also, it's centrally located in Old Montreal, which you definitely won't want to miss

This is where you are living... so please don't miss out on a walk on Laurier, from de Mentana to Papineau and back, you'll cross the Laurier Park, and then so many boutiques and restaurants, and typical architecture... Saint-Denis and Mont-Royal are two other near boulevards that offer a lot, Saint-Denis heading south from Saint-Joseph and Mont-Royal anywhere between du Parc and Papineau! As you digest everything you see, please don't forget to turn a corner on a side street and discover the 3-storey brick buildings with balconies and winding cast iron and wood staircases that are iconic to this area, and a nightmare to negotiate and shovel in winter!

Start at Place des Arts, in the center of Le Quartier des Spectacles, on Sainte-Catherine street, and explore Le Complexe Desjardins and Montreal's performing arts center, across each other on Sainte-Catherine (and linked by an underground corridor part of the underground city). You'll be right where most of our summer and winter festivals take place (Place des Festivals, to the west of Place des Arts). Then just head west on Sainte-Catherine to discover our downtown

It's a small replica of Saint Peter's in Rome! Both outside and inside... and much closer than the real thing. And as you've enjoyed my suggestion of visiting the Underground City, it's conveniently located near the end of my suggested way.

It was built entirely from donations under the impetus of Brother André, a testament to our recent past (construction started at the very beginning of the 20th century) and was only finished in the 60s. It's massive, eclectic architecture (especially inside, comparing the lower level crypt and the upper level Basilica) will surprise you and once you've reached the Basilica, don't forget to take in the view by exiting through the back doors. From the darkness of the Basilica, you'll emerge on top of Montreal.
