You can only buy alcohol in restaurants, bars and the government run Vínbúðin. There is one in Borgartún open from 11-6 on weekdays, -16 on Saturdays but closed on Sundays. We prefer red wine ;)

I love the beautiful paintings and drawings from the old Icelandic masters that hang in the wine lounge of Hótel Holt. It's on Bergstaðastræti, just off Skólavörðustígur (where the big church is). Very fancy, but totally worth it.
