Take the car ferry for free or the passenger ferry for $1 from Hatteras Village over to Ocracoke Island where you can see the ponies, sit on miles of wonderful sandy beaches, or get a bite to eat at the South end of the Island. A great place to bring your bikes.

This makes for a fun day trip, if you don't mind a little scenic drive, and a ferry ride.
