Jean Pierre Roma, a visionary French businessman, sailed three boats to the future Roma Site in June 1732. Roma and his men set to work and within a few years his crew had cleared 200 acres and had constructed nine buildings as part of Roma's plan … an international trade centre. Roma's boats transported dried cod, trade goods and alcohol along a network between France, the West Indies, Fortress Louisbourg and Quebec. And Roma's crew constructed many of PEI's first roads connecting his Site with St Peters Bay and Port La Joye and many other locations. Roma's Site lasted only 13 years when in July 1745 it was burned to the ground by British Privateers. 276 years have passed since the burning and sacking of Roma's Settlement in 1745. In recognation of this sad event, the Great Escape of 1745 Festival will be held on **July 31, August 7 &14. Additionally on **July 31st the Three Rivers Arts and Cultural Festival will be staged at the Roma Site.

Roma at Three Rivers is a non-profit National Historic Site that was developed and is run by a local board of volunteers. During our season (about July to September), we offer daily interactive demonstrations by our cast of french indentured servants, who bring to life what it was like to leave their lives in France and work in undeveloped Isle St Jean (today's PEI). Come for lunch and try some of our heritage items on the menu! Learn Jean Pierre Roma's fishermen caught and preserved their cod. Taste the herbs in the garden. Sense the heat held by the wood oven, even the day after baking bread. Try on some french "sabot"! Give a go at quill pen writing. Reserve ahead of time, and try candle making! For children (or the young at heart), we also have a variety of toys and games that we can play. We always tailor our demonstrations to the ages of our visitors (no matter how young). You can be sure that you'll enjoy you're experience here!

This historic site brings to life the story of Jean Pierre Roma, the French merchant who in 1732 established the first trading post on PEI. A great stop for history lovers!
