The distillers at St. George Spirits work in exceptionally small batches with beautiful copper pot stills. They watch the stills carefully and taste as they go. These techniques allow them to dispose of any pot that isn’t coming together perfectly rather than adding more ingredients to try and rescue a larger pot. The distillery is considered one of the best in the country for absinthe, which wasn’t legalized in the United States until 2007. At that point, though, the employees at St. George Spirits had been creating absinthe for 11 years just for themselves.

Alameda Spite House, Broadway and Crist St This (occupied) house is 10 feet wide and full of spite. The growing city of Alameda had commandeered a good chunk of land from a Mr. Charles Froling with the intention of building a street, with the support of an unsympathetic neighbor. Froling had intentions for the inherited slice of heaven himself—a dream home which, when thwarted, Froling turned into an architectural nightmare. Using what little land he had left, a vindictive Froling built his house anyway—20 ft. high, 54 ft. long… and 10 ft. wide.
