Sites to visit not too far away

Visitors to South Wales are spoilt for choice. Its rich history means there are renown Roman baths, Abbeys and Castles near by. Blaenavon with its iron works, Coal mines is a UNESCO site. Tredegar House, run by the National Trust near Newport is 19 miles away. The Welsh Botanic Gardens is 68 miles away but together with the gardens at Aberglasney, makes an excellent day trip. Abergavenny has a market on Tuesdays and Fridays. Crickhowell is a quaint town with independent retailers. Hay on Wye, is a beautiful 75 minutes drive up the Llanthony Valley, past Capel y fin, over Gospel Pass and down into this book town which sits on the River Wye.

In the 19th century Lady Llanover, who thoroughly disapproved of alcohol, brought all the pubs in Llanover, turning them into houses. However, the Goose and Cuckoo, above the canal was beyond her reach. Fortunately there are several excellent pubs in the surrounding area.
The closest pub to Llanover. It is full of character, real fire, delicious food and excellent selection of local beer, spirits. Wonderful views. A good uphill walk, even better downhill
