Hiking and Running Trails

I hope you are ready for a fun time in Boulder! I’ve put together some info on local hikes, all of which you can find on the All Trails site. I highly recommend downloading the All Trails app as well. You can easily search and filter trails for elevations, length, etc. Enjoy your adventure, and bring plenty of sunscreen.
This is a very popular spot for local runners and hikers. The access is close to downtown – grab a coffee and a pastry from Spruce Confections, and hit the trail for a spectacular view of Boulder from the top of Mt. Sanitas.

The Chautauqua area has multiple trails, and is a gorgeous spot to just enjoy being outside. Consider going to the Chautauqua Dining Hall for a lovely brunch post hike – it’s a historical dining area with good food and an amazing location.

o For running/ hiking trails on the prairie – a 5-10 minute drive from Hawthorn House, some of my favorites are Boulder Reservoir Loop and the Boulder Valley Ranch, where both the Sage and Eagle Trails are relatively flat, wide open spaces.

o One of my favorite places on the planet is the Brainard Lake Recreation Area. This is about 45 minutes from the Hawthorn house, northwest of Boulder. Please note that access to the Brainard Lake area is limited from September – June, where you’ll have to park at the winter parking area. The location is above 10,000 ft elevation, so the snow comes early and doesn’t melt until about July. The Brainard Lake area also very popular, so go early and/or go on a weekday to avoid crowds. It’s great for snow shoeing and xc skiing in the winter, and the hikes to the high country for amazing views in the summer can’t be beat. Even in the shoulder season (May-June or Oct-Dec), the walk from the winter parking area to Brainard Lake along the road (about 2 miles each way) for a picnic is worth it to see the unforgettable views of the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. Just don’t forget to bring sunscreen and a jacket – it’s always at least 20+ degrees cooler than Boulder at that elevation.
