Sightseeing

The Mountain of Saint George was a place of worship in ancient times. Excavations from 1992 to 1994 revealed the "Minoan Peak Sanctuary", a finding of particular importance for the study of the Minoan religion, since the temple is the only monument of its kind that has not been looted. Numerous stone worshiping objects, clay figurines, bronze human statuettes and offerings, jewelry and ceramics have been found in this place. During the Byzantine period, the church of St. George was built and it has been restored and preserved till nowadays. On the floor of the temple you can see the preserved mosaic (7th century AD) with various motifs such as hunting scenes and Hellenistic meanders. On St. George’s day, the locals organize a traditional celebration in the courtyard of the temple. The view from the church is breathtaking: At an altitude of 350 meters, you can see the southwest coast of the Peloponnese and a large part of the Aegean Sea. If the weather is good and the horizon is clear, you can even see Antikythera on the South, as well as the mountains of Crete.

Wonderful waterfalls and hiking trails, start your way from the main waterfall of fonissa and follow the signs down to the walking path through nature where you will stumble across more waterfalls and natural swimming pools! FYI: sadly due to lack of rain during winter, if you visit mid summer the water will be minimal if any at all!

You will find this 16th-century castle to the west of the village of Mylopotamos. Built to protect the villagers from pirates, it was inhabited until the 1950s. Surviving today in good condition are several houses and churches that make the past seem not so remote. From the west side of the castle you can view one of the most beautiful sunsets in Kythira.

Paleochora is a pure marvel and it is really worth the visit. It is the ruined medieval ancient capital of Kythira. During the Byzantine period it was known under the name of Agios Dimitrios. This little town was built on the north-eastern side of the island, northwest of a deep cliff. It is set on the hilltop, at the head of the amazing Kako Langadi gorge, where two deep canyons join. It is surrounded by a sheer 100 metres drop. It is a perfect example of the 13th century architecture, similar to Mystras and Monemvasia. Paleochora is fortified and lower than the surrounding hills but it is invisible from the sea, which used to protect it from the many pirate raids that were plaguing the island for many years. Despite those precautions, the terrifying pirate Barbarossa managed to find and destroyed it in 1537, selling all the inhabitants as slaves. From that time, the city has never been reconstructed because it has been considered a place of bad fortune. This wonderful site is full of fine Byzantine churches and chapels, like the church of Agia Barbara or the churches of Panagia, which all have remains of nice wall paintings and frescoes. The gorges form a small lake of great beauty and ecological value.
