Hiking

Visit the world famous Briksdal glacier! It is a very easy and family friendly hike that takes 45 min each way. You have the possibility to buy a ticket with the “Troll Car" which will give you the ultimate sightseeing experience. The road was built in 1926 by hardworking farmers, and the transport company is 100% owned and operated by the farmers and families in Oldedalen. The trip will take you along big rivers and through a majestic waterfall and you will be surrounded by breathtaking nature the whole way. Briksdal glacier is an arm of the Jostedal Glacier which is the largest glacier in continental Europe. Contrary to popular beliefs it is not the remains of the last ice age, since everything melted away 6-7000 years ago. However, it does date back at least 2000 years. Photo by @kristianrustoen

This is definitely one of the best hikes in the area. The hike is 5,6 km each way, and will take you approximately 4-5 hours. It is a bit steep, and can be a little challenging if you are not used to hiking (or heights). You will have a great view from the start to the end. At the top you can see both glaciers and the entire valley. It will also be possible to walk on the glacier from this point, but that is not recommended if you are not experienced.

This is a beautiful hike, with about the same length as to Briksdal Glacier, but not as crowded as Briksdal! You also get a spectacular view of the Brenndal Glacier and the valley. Starting point is from Aabrekk Farm. Photo by @bjartehaugen

The journey begins from the gravel pit in Kvame. There is a small parking lot at the beginning where you can park your car. The hike up to the cabin "Flatsteinbu" (1260 m above sea level) is about 4-5 hours, and some areas can be a little steep. You can spend the night in this well equipped cabin in exchange of a small fee. It’s about 4,3 km of well marked path. Photo by @rubensoltvedt

A "seter" was an essential part of the farm back in the old days. 2/3 of Norway is mountainous, and a "seter" helped taking advantage of it. Goats and cattle could graze the mountainsides, and the milk was sent down to the farm using a wire. A trip to Rustøysetra does not only offer spectacular views, but also an insight to the daily lives of norwegian farmers before the oil came around. Starting point is from the tractor road right by the end of Rustøyelva. Its about a 2,2 km hike and takes about 1,5 hours.

Exploring

Lodalen is the neighbour valley, and is a very beautiful place worth exploring The place has a tragic history. With a rockslide in 1905 killing 62 people. And another one in 1936 where 74 people died. A memorial monument with names of the victims can be found in the end of the valley.
