Just a 15-minute lakeshore cruise from Woodside Cottage, Ashtabula's historic Bridge Street packs a lot in one little street that connects to the famous Bascule Lift Bridge. See individual restaurant recommendations and let me just say, as a certifiable "foodie" who has lived in major cities across the U.S., the restaurants of Bridge Street delivered some of my all time favorite meals, let alone favorites in the area. To name a few: • Omg, the roasted brussels sprout salad with truffle fries and a dirty martini at Halcyon. • Tuscan kale salad, Bianco brick oven pizza, and my favorite cocktail ever, Cardamaro & Tonic at Nights and Weekends. • Spinach gnocchi with brown butter & sage and a Thyme Bourbon at Bascule Bridge. You'll also find these wonderful stores: • Carlisle's, lovely ambiance, selling small batch locally-made maple syrup along with an array of beautifully-curated items from soaps to occasion cards, to local wine by the bottle. • Phooey Farms Market offering local meats, cheeses, produce, artisan breads, and a huge selection of flavored olive oils. • Harbor Gardens features local products and education: workshops and events related to local organic farming, cooking classes and community building. • Heartmade Boutique sells sassy sayings on a wide range of gift items. • When you're all shopped out, grab an espresso at the spacious, industrial-styled Harbor Perk Cafe. Foodie fave and worth the 15-minute trip from Woodside Cottage for the Brussels salad and truffle parm fries or the Texan BBQ burger (vegetarians should try this subbing Impossible Burger) or the super tasty pan-seared Atlantic salmon with parmesan herb risotto. One visit to Nights and Weekends turned into instant adoration. A beautiful atmosphere enwraps you, featuring elegant quartz bar; Pavesi wood fire pizza oven, made in Modena, Italy; hand-painted terrazzo bathroom and general modern rustic ambiance. Yet it's family-owned and operated by the most welcoming folks who've been making pizza in the area for 60 years. Each Neapolitan-style pie is handmade by a master pizza maker and will have you craving it for weeks after. Personal favorite satisfying yet healthy combo: The Tuscan kale salad with toasted pine nuts and golden raisins with Bianco pizza that is seriously the best wood fire pizza we've had (though, not gonna lie, we haven't had pizza in Moderna Italy proper). BIG LIST OF FOOD ON THE STRIP IN WALKING DISTANCE FROM WOODSIDE COTTAGE Please note: If you find certain listing missing a phone number or website, AirBnB would not allow some of that information to be published in this guide. Pizza Delivery Dominos Or you can order online or pick up from Zeppes on the strip. BREAKFAST Mary’s Kitchen 5023 New Street Home-cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week during summer season. The average 2-eggs any style with meat will run you about 8 bucks. An omelet is closer to $10. The pancakes are light and fluffy with a Bisquick-like flavor. It's affordable diner food and very popular (often with a twenty-minute wait for a table so plan accordingly). Mike’s Triangle Lounge 5028 Lake Road E. Breakfast on weekends only. Stumble out the back door of Woodside Cottage and land at the Triangle Lounge. Mainly bar food, including hand-battered perch and walleye. FAST FOOD AND FESTIVAL FOOD—BRING CASH! The majority of places on the strip are cash only. Yes, we know, very old school. But most of these are family owned and operated and don't want to pay the credit card company fees. The good news is that things aren't way overpriced either. Bob’s Food Court 5444 Lake Road • 440.812.8134 Corn dogs, Bob’s lemonade, corn on the cob, famous fresh-cut french fries, sausage, chicken, meatball sandwiches. Front sidewalk seating and back patio with corn hole games. Eddie’s Grill 5377 Lake Road Since 1950! Nostalgic ‘50s atmosphere enjoyed by all ages. Delicious fries, burgers, pizza, dogs, and ice cold lemonade, root beer, and Dairy Queen treats. Madsen Donuts 5426 Lake Road E. “The world’s best homemade donuts since 1938" We've tried many a jelly donut from coast to coast, at indie gourmet places and big chains and can say with absolute confidence that Madsen's is our hands-down favorite. When it comes to jelly donuts it's all about the ratios: amount of donut to jelly to sugar and they knock it out of the park. There's something about the texture of their donuts in general that we've never had anywhere else: not too poofy/bready and not too flat with a soft interior and thin crunchy "crust." We suspect it has to do with the fact that they are ACTUALLY homemade—like people frying them at 4am each day as opposed to the big chains that ship them in frozen. Madsen's is one of the a handful of places that do take credit cards so it's ideal to go grab a box when headed out of town after you've used your cash at the other GOTL vendors. Grumpy's Lemonade Like Madsen's donuts, this place gives you the feeling they've had this recipe in the family for decades. When we first tried to get a Grumpy's, we didn't have cash ($3 for a small). So we meandered down the way to another place that took credit cards called Captain Gus that charged $5. Sorry Captain, but what a disappointment. It was like instant lemonade that had a lemon slice thrown in for appearances only and was watery and artificial-tasting. In contrast, we tried Grumpy's the next day, with cash in hand, and it was a beautiful experience: seeming layers of real crushed lemons and sweet swirls of real sugar, still crunchy as you drank, and ice cold on a very hot day. They earned a $2 tip for being authentic, delicious, and not cheap with their product. Katie’s Ice Cream 5426 Lake Road E. Right next to Madsen Donuts. We’re guessing their ice cream is as good as their donuts (owned by the same family, or that’s the word on the street). PUBS Goblin Wine & Ale House 4964 S. Spencer Dr. 20 Craft Beers on Tap, burgers, quesadillas and appetizers. GOTL Brewing Co. 5243 Lake Road E. Lakefront dining and bar. Mike’s Triangle Lounge 5028 Lake Road E. Breakfast on weekends only. Stumble out the back door of Woodside Cottage and land at the Triangle Lounge. Mainly bar food, including hand-battered perch and walleye. Murphy’s Pub 5475 Lake Road E. Family-friendly Irish-themed pub offering traditional Irish fare, specialty drinks, and craft brews. FINE DINING ON/NEAR THE STRIP DELISH ITALIAN Piero’s Pasta House 5367 Lake Road E. A local favorite and well-known by outsiders who travel far to eat here. Chef/owner, JP, entertains patrons as they watch him prepare his famous pasta. Small and humble interior—like sitting in someone's kitchen almost—makes it hard to get a table. Plan on at least a 30-minute wait. Crosswinds Grille at the Lakehouse Inn 5653 Lake Road Fine dining in a casual lakefront atmosphere. Well, that's how they describe themselves but the last time we went, we were not able to actually get a table lakeside. Call in advance if what you're looking for is a table overlooking the lake. The food has always been excellent, from grilled salmon to caesar salads. A more upscale experience than most in the area. Horizons Restaurant at the Lodge Hotel Just a 5 minute drive from Woodside Cottage, take a wonderful, fancy escape to this Lodge Hotel restaurant that is open to the public, even if you’re not staying there. Lake Erie’s fish populations are the most abundant of the Great Lakes, partially because of the lake's relatively mild temperature. The lake is “loaded with native superstars” such as steelhead, walleye, smallmouth bass, perch, trout, salmon, whitefish, smelt, and more. Non-native fish such as rainbow and brown trout are stocked specifically for anglers to catch. http://www.dbsportfishing.com/ (440) 479-5185
