Food Scene
Bao Down is a good option if there are two or three of you. They offer two dinner sittings. It's within walking distance (just near Gardens Centre) but the roads twist and bend so google the route in advance. It's also popular - so call ahead. Delicious Asian fusion menu, designed for sharing. Buzzy, small venue.
Chefs Warehouse is pricier but a real treat. One of Cape Town's top dining options, it's a casually stylish spot offering shared dishes between two (but a single diner can be accommodated). They call it tapas because each day's menu is a surprise, but portions are substantial.

Parking "tax"
In SA it's usual for a stranger to confidently appear at your car once you've parked in a bay, or even to try to direct you into the space enthusiastically. Don't be alarmed. We call them car guards and consider it a normal part of SA life as a sort of parking "tax". Although you can refuse to pay for this service, especially if just popping out of your car briefly, it needs to be done firmly. Generally a car guard will keep an eye on your vehicle while at a movie or restaurant, and expect a cash tip. R5 to R10 is the going rate, depending on how long you've parked.
