Old-time joint with great seafood, order simple or saucy, beautiful marsh view. Skip the famed Bowen's Island, of late becoming a mere tourist trap, and go here.

The Gullah People Welcome YOU! Go there with respect, keep it real, and be showered with hospitality. All the food is good and the view is heavenly. Tell them Richard and Katherine sent you, and ask about the history of the place. If it's not open - dat Islan' way, mon - go back to Folly road and head to LoLo's. That's how we do it.

Gorgeous country restaurant, excellent fusion of Italian and Southern traditions. They cure their own meats and the waiters can recommend good wines with the meal.

Closest seafood to you. Gullah-owned, started with a truck. There are others that we like better, but if you want to stay close, this country joint is one the locals all recommend.

Excellent interpretation, of the slave-owners' lives in an 18th century downtown house. (Plus our Helen is a Heyward and lived in a garret there as a girl.) We also HIGHLY recommend Laughing Gull Tours for a guided walking tour of old Charleston http://www.laughinggulltours.com/

Good interpretation of life in a Southern slave-labor camp. The house and gardens are well kept and the guided tour, focused on life in the 'big house,' is pretty good. The intact slaves' quarters, though not docent-guided, are a fine exhibit, with informative placards.
