SKIING IN THE PYRENEES Less than two hours' drive from Salies de Bearn are many Ski Stations suitable for beginners through to expert, family ski trips and adrenalin seeking snow boarders and off piste enthusiasts. Saint Lary Soulan for example, less than a two hour drive from Salies de Bearn offers over 100 Km of slopes, a 700 ha skiable area, 275 snow guns, 30 ski lifts (1 cable-car, 2 gondola lift, 11 chair lifts and 18 ski-tows), 55 ski runs (7 green, 26 blue, 12 red and 10 black) and a family friendly Kidpark and toboggan run.

ESPELETTE – the home of the Basque Piment is a charming village in a picturesque Pyrenean setting where the houses and many traditional restaurants are adorned with hanging bunches of chillies. These chillies are very mild but are world famous having been awarded their own official certification (AOC appellation d'origine controlee) like many champagnes, wines, and cheeses. A drive to Espelette is a wonderful day trip from Salies for a pretty walk, a long lunch and browse through the many chilli themed delicatessens and souvenir stores. There is also a particularly good chocolatier offering free tasting samples and selling many delicious sweet treats and an unusual chilli chocolate, which

Also famous are the local tapas called pinxto, which can be found throughout San Seb at all bars and restaurants. Costing only a Euro or so each, pinxto are small bite sized snacks on little skewers which go very well with a glass of the local vino tinto. A day out in the Old Town stopping for a few bites and a vino at half a dozen local Pinxto bars is a great day trip!

Quieter during the winter months, it is standing room only during the walking season, but Saint Jean Pied de Port is always a wonderful place to meander around the ancient cobbled streets watching all the modern day pilgrims make their preparations for the walk ahead. There are also many relaxed dining options year round.
