This landmark holds a very big part of the history of Cebu - whereupon the arrival of Portuguese and Spanish explorers, Ferdinand Magellan planted a wooden cross upon their arrival at the island on March 15, 1521. Today, the cross is housed in an octagonal pavilion called the “kiosk”. It was granted a plenary indulgence for those who piously pray before it every Feast of the Triumph of the Cross by Bishop Santos Gomez Marañon, then Bishop of Cebu (1830-1840).

Built in 1972 by the Cebu’s substantial Chinese community, the Cebu Taoist Temple has a replica of the Great Wall of China by its entrance. Devotees and tourists alike visit here to perform rituals - like the climbing of its 81 steps, which represents the 81 chapters of Taoism scriptures, the lighting of joss sticks and having their fortune be read by the monks.
