Go for lunch at Villas Mombacho on a sunny day. It’s a wonderful, quiet place with a perfect view of the lake and surrounding volcanoes. Try out the local fish “Guapote” or the shrimps. Both are delicious and so is the “limonada con hierba buena”. You can go for a boat ride on the lake afterwards to visit the islets.

Explore the city by horse carriage

It can get quite hot in Granada and kids might get tired of walking around by foot all day. So why not hire a horse carriage and explore the city in a comfortable ride? You can stop where ever you like and take your time to visit each place, while the driver patiently waits for you. Especially younger kids will love it and might get a chance to sit next to the driver and take the reigns for a while.

Share your left-over food

Nicaragua is a poor country. Especially in Calle La Calzada it is not unusual to find children and adults passing by the outside restaurant tables and asking for some food. If this bothers you, you can politely say no and they will leave you alone. However, if you should have some left-overs, you could ask for a doggy bag and consider sharing them with people in the street. You’ll find that they will appreciate the gesture and you’re likely to strike up a friendly conversation!

Bring light clothes and plenty of sunscreen

It can get quite hot in Granada. Always carry a bottle of water around so you don’t get dehydrated, especially if you’re traveling with children. Bring light clothes, a hat or cap and plenty of sunscreen! In the rainy season you may also want to pack a poncho or umbrella.

Rent a car if you plan to go sight-seeing across the country

Inside Granada it is easy to get around by foot or in a horse carriage. There are also many tours available that will take you to the main tourist destinations in the surrounding areas. However, if you want to be able to explore Nicaragua at your own pace, you may wish to rent a car. The infrastructure is generally good and it is easy to drive around the country. If there is no GPS in the car, you can use Waze on your phone. Avoid driving at night for your safety.
