Fancy sipping on spritzes and sharing saganaki by the pool? You don’t have to jetset to the Greek Islands – Brisbane’s very own urban resort The Calile Hotel has you sorted. Much-loved Nobby Beach eatery Hellenika has opened a sibling venue in Brisbane, serving at the hotel’s signature poolside restaurant. Making your way up to the pool deck, you’ll be greeted in Hellenika’s breezy olive tree-lined alfresco terrace overlooking the glistening waters of the resort’s pool. Those waiting for a table can take a seat at the bar or recline poolside in a cabana – you can even stay there to enjoy your meal if you so desire. Starters and small plates of kalamata olive-topped taramasalata, grilled saganaki, veal dolmades wrapped in silverbeet and Hellenika’s famous kolokithia zucchini chips will certainly get you feeling like you’re grazing in the Greek Islands. Larger share options include flaky spanakopita, eggplant moussaka, chicken souvlakia and 1.2-kg classic baked lamb shoulder. The 450-plus bottle wine list, with an impressive selection of Greek drops, will offer something new to try with each visit, but if you’ve opted to eat in a cabana, we highly suggest you do so with a cocktail in hand. You can start your day the right way with a big Greek breakfast, as the kitchen serves up morning fare from 6:30–10:00 am daily – think caramelised fresh grapefruit with sweet Greek yoghurt, spanakopita, the Eggs with Eggs with Eggs (boiled eggs, taramasalata, salmon peals and toast), or The Onassis, with streaky bacon, loukanika (Greek sausages), olive-oil fried eggs, fresh tomato, a lamb cutlet and toast.

Hikari is a charming Japanese izakaya - a casual eatery and bar serving authentic Japanese fare along with beer, whisky and sake from a street corner in Teneriffe. delivering the goods when it comes to the two core focuses of izakaya-style dining (alcohol with food) but have given the traditional menu options a slight tweaking to break the mould slightly while making the food approachable for all. The menu runs from hot and cold tasting appetisers and small plates to robata-grill dishes, makimono (sushi rolls), yasaimono (Japanese salads) and amaimono (dessert). Joon’s experimental flair has been applied to dishes such as the hiramasa kingfish with yuzu soy, fresh jalapeno and truffle oil, deep-fried soft-shell crab salad with shrimp chips and corn salsa, jalapeno salmon shooters with cream cheese, and New Zealand Ora king salmon with edamame and avocado mash. A lunch menu gives diners the option of donburi rice bowls, Hiroshima-style okonomu-yakisoba and katsu sandos. The kitchen will be shaking up the menu weekly, with new dishes popping in and out regularly. Joon – also a sake sommelier – has assembled an impressive list of drinks, including Dassai sake, draught Orion beer, umeshu, shochu, premium Japanese whisky, Australian wine and a host of cocktails.

Samson and Sophie is Teneriffe’s neighbourhood gem – a fabulous rustic café that does a cracking all day breakfast, delicious treats, top notch coffee and offers an eclectic assortment of wares for sale. Outside a mish mash of colourful tables made from recycled doors, tubs of plants and patio chairs adds to the mellow communal vibe of this child and dog friendly café. While the atmosphere may be laidback anything goes, the food and service is nothing short of first class, as Samson and Sophie quietly dishes up some of the best café fare to be found in inner city Brisbane. As a bonus, dietary requirements are well catered for, with many dishes with raw, gluten-free or spelt bases as well as the flexibility for diners to create their own based on diet needs and what is available.

James Street won't’ disappoint when it comes to wining, dining and shopping. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are well catered to along this strip, which has become recognised as the home to some of Brisbane’s best restaurants and cafes. While cafes are in no short supply - King Arthur is a local favourite - it’s upscale dining in particular that continue to flourish here. Longtime dinner favourites include the Middle Eastern-inspired Gerard’s Bistro, The Calile Hotel’s luxury Greek offering Hellenika, Ada Lane's Asian-fusion hotspot sAme sAme and the European flair of Mosconi. Cementing itself as one of the city's dining hotspots, James Street has its share of buzzy newcomers too. Highly anticipated Essa burst onto the scene with harvest-driven contemporary dishes in its intimate split-level 60-seater restaurant, with a carefully curated wine menu that'll keep you popping in to linger over share plates. Likewise, classic Italian trattoria Bianca keeps seasonality at the forefront, with everything down to the bread and pasta made in-house. Thankfully takeaway is just as plentiful for those in a rush. Botanica has become much celebrated for its creative takes on the salad. While Jocelyn’s Provisions is a Brisbane institution as a haven of sweet treats, cakes, and specialty pastries, as too is Sydney favourite Gelato Messina. Or cook up a storm at home, procuring your supplies from the gourmet spreads available at deli James St Market.
