Swanhaven itself is a tiny suburb on the shores of SwanLake. You are just one minutes walk from the lake, and there are beautiful white sandy beaches which are a perfect private refuge to get away from the crowds. The lake is great for swimming, which if you’re lucky, you can enjoy with the many native black swans which give the lake (and our cottage) its name. (a cob is a male swan)

Cudmirrah Beach is the home of Sussex Inlet Surf Lifesaving Club (which is also the best access point with parking) and well known by keen surfers for having good beach breaks. The beach runs for three kilometres from Sussex Inlet entrance to Cudmirrah village. It backs onto sand dunes which form a barrier between Swan Lake and the ocean.

Granite Falls walking track offers an easy amble through eucalypt-dominated bushland. Check out robust stringybark, red bloodwood and turpentine trees as you go, and brush up on the area’s history and geology with the track’s interpretive signs. Your destination is Granite Falls lookout. This fenced viewing platform overhangs a dense green valley and offers scenic views. The 63 metre-high falls are quite impressive and the unusual granite rock face they trickle down is fascinating to observe. There’s space to enjoy an informal picnic while overlooking the falls. Walking this track in spring delivers the added bonus of blooming wildflowers, including boronias, along the way. https://www.shoalhaven.com/products/granite-falls-walking-track

https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/things-to-do/walking-tracks/pigeon-house-mountain-didthul-walking-track Pigeon House Mountain Didthul walking track is one of the best walks in Morton National Park and on the south coast. The walk is in the park’s southern section. The walk is pretty steep in parts, but terrific views make it worthwhile. You’ll hike through forest, heathland and age-old sandstone before coming to the best part – negotiating a series of ladders that lead you to the summit and the view. Take in the captivating sight of cliffs and gorges within the Budawang Wilderness, all carved by the Clyde River. On clear days, you may be able to see as far as Jervis Bay and Bermagui. You might even spot a lyrebird along the final portion of the track, where you can also check out rare Pigeon House Ash eucalypts.

https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/things-to-do/walking-tracks/nerindillah-lagoon-walking-track The short and easy Nerindillah Lagoon walking track takes in Monument Beach, historic heritage including the Walter Hood monument, and is great for birdwatching. Starting from Holly Street in North Bendalong, this circuit may only be 2.5km, but walking it will be a rewarding experience as you stroll along the shore of Nerindillah Lagoon. Take a break at Monument Beach picnic area before climbing the track to the Walter Hood monument. Head back along the isolated beach and jump in for a swim along the way. Birdwatchers will be inspired, too. Keep your eyes peeled for white-faced heron on the lagoon. Sea eagles often soar overhead, and the sands of Monument Beach are home to shorebirds such as sooty oystercatchers and hooded plovers.
