The only public transport that serves the area is the bus service and the frequency of the buses is very poor. The other mode of public transport is shared taxis which are generally packed way beyond the actual sitting capacity.

In and around Bhimtal people are welcoming. However, as far as possible, avoid taking pictures inside some of the shrines, specially inside the sanctum sanctorum. Rest you are good to go and feel free. There is negligible crime, so you can roam around fearlessly and approach local people for information and interaction, if you feel like.

Booking is seldom required
You can visit almost any place without any prior booking or reservation, barring a wait of a few minutes for some of the activities during peak season from mid April to mid July.

Baggage
Warm clothes from November to March are recommended. It is not too cold, the minimum temperature will be about 0-1 degree Celsius on a cold wintry night, which is not very often. Day time weather is normally warm, if it's not cloudy.
Rest of the year. It is quite normal weather. In fact, it's warm in May and June.
Bring good sports shoes, if you can and if you are interested in trekking or cycling etc.

Finding parking during peak season from mid April to mid July and other long weekends in Nainital city is a herculean task. Be also prepared to face unexpected traffic congestion/jam anywhere in the hills during the mentioned peak seasons.
