Places we recommend after some serious quality testing
Two minutes walk from Sea Proche and overlooking the sea, The Reef is a casual, welcoming bar/restaurant. It's perfect for long lunches on the terrace as it gets the sun until late, and in the evenings, their Diavolo pizza is a thing of legend (as are their Espresso Martini's...)!

On the 'revetmente' at the farthest extreme of Sandown, towards Lake and Shanklin, this Mediterranean inspired cafe/bar is the place to go to try something a little more creative than the usual fare of fish and chips (as lovely though that most certainly is). Beach boxes with fresh sardines, mackeral, prawns and smoked salmon as well as a good vegetarian selection are an example of what's on offer, along with great coffee and San Miguel on tap - and their Sky Bar is a great place to hang out as the sun passes the yard arm on Summer evenings!

Modern styling, family-friendly, inexpensive meals and frequent offers, with efficient staff and an unfussy selection of wines and beers - plus it's less than five minutes stroll from Sea Proche and right across the street from both the Pier and the beach. We often come here on our first night - after the journey down it's the perfect solution for hungry children and thirsty adults. Be advised that it is super popular, so booking in advance is a must at all times, unless you're coming in the depths of winter!

Walks near Sea Proche

Great walks that are just outside the door
The walk from Sea Proche up Culver Down is just long enough to feel like an accomplishment, but short enough to get you back in time for lunch. Gorgeous English downland with a backdrop of the Solent; a 19th Century fort and the always popular Culver Haven Inn await. Give yourself at least 3 hours for the round trip, including a rejuvenating pint. Suitable for energetic children, but a bit of a mission with a pushchair.

Entertainment, even if it rains!

A few places we've tried and tested with our kids on those disappointingly grey days.
No family holiday on the island would be complete without a trip to the oldest theme park in England, and it's even great fun if the weather's a bit, well, English. The recently added animatronic dinosaur attraction is very well done - and the T-Rex suitably thrilling for younger children. Kids (and some adults!) will spend hours in Cowboy Town living out their frontier dreams...

Some information about Sandown.
Like many English seaside towns, the once upmarket Victorian seaside resort of Sandown has suffered somewhat over the last 50 years, with the impact of cheap flights, financial market crashes, dodgy investors and of course, Covid. As a result, this proud town has more than its fair share of dilapidated hotels and guest houses. This is something about which the friendly locals are justifiably cross and (second only to how good the weather is here!) will happily talk to you about at length. But look past these unfortunate victims of historic decline and you will see that Sandown remains a very friendly little town, with much to offer, its wide, golden sandy beaches and beautiful natural scenery are a match for any in England, and new investments can be seen all around town. Sandown remains a wonderful place for an English seaside holiday.

Beaches

A bit about Sandown's beach
Sandown boasts some of the Island's best beaches, with soft golden sand, shallow waters, beautiful views and some great beach side restaurants and cafes. In 2022 Sandown Beach was again awarded the internationally prestigious 'Blue Flag'. In order to qualify for the Blue Flag, a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility criteria must be met and maintained and Sandown have invested in Beach Lifeguards, beach cleaning, marker buoys and accessibility enhancements along with a number of other new projects. And it's only 2 mins away from Sea Proche!

Şehir tavsiyesi

Gitmeden önce rezervasyon yapın

Book a restaurant for your first night.

Unsurprisingly, eating out is hugely popular in this seaside town, and the best spots are frequently busy during bank holidays and the high season. However, almost all will reserve tables and are usually pretty flexible if you're a bit late. We highly recommend booking a place for your first night to avoid having to cook after a long journey. The Cookhouse & Pub is perfect for families with small kids, with plenty of family friendly food and frequent offers. For a couple or those with older children, we'd recommend The Reef or the Bandstand - all are within a very short walk from Sea Proche.
