Big pub at the top of Coldharbour Lane opposite the Ritzy. Downstairs it’s a normal pub. But it also has a separate entrance round the corner for the upstairs which has a big club, a comedy night, and in the summer an amazing outdoor roof terrace where they have all day parties. Check online for what’s on.

Tapas bar in the crypt of St Matthews church (the big square church in the middle). Nice Spanish food by candlelight in the crypt. Very cool place and lots of space, so you can normally get a table (and they take reservations). Bar has DJs until 3am at the weekends.

A short walk from the flat, but this is a good pub with a friendly crowd. It serves nice food and then has some decent club nights later on.

Just next to Hootenanny on Effra Rd, the old Conservative club is now a bar. It gets busy in the evenings with DJs playing mainly classic pop at the weekends. It also does a surprisingly good Sunday lunch!

There is an amazing slice of Brixton life in this huge pub. Live bands every night, often playing incredible reggae. You never know what to expect but it’s normally a pretty fun night out…

Entertainment & Activities

Great cinema at the top of Coldharbour Lane. Has nice bar on Windrush Square and serves simple food (pizzas etc). A nice place for a coffee and watching the world go by... The upstairs bar has an eclectic range of live music, poetry, quizzes, DJs - check the programme for whats on.

Food Scene

Cool covered market with loads of small shops and quirky restaurants, nestled amongst the traditional market stalls. Fri/Sat nights it gets especially busy. They often have live bands and DJs. Try wherever you fancy, but some good recommended places are: - Kaosarn - Good simple Thai food, with lots of tables outside - Honest Burger - Well cooked burgers & craft ales - Senzala - "French crepes with Brazilian flair” - good place for brunch. - Federation Coffee - definitely stop off here for a coffee and sit and watch the world go by - Okan - Excellent Japanese Okonomiyaki (savoury pancakes) Most places now take credit cards, but if not there is an ATM to get cash in the market. A few of the places don’t serve alcohol but allow you to "bring your own” (BYO) - just look at the menu to see. The nearest place to buy is Liquor Supply on the corner of Coldharbour Lane.

Small restaurant set up in an old hair salon. A bit more expensive than most places but it does a fun 4 course tasting menu for £31. The food is inventive, seasonal and well cooked - although the portions are not very big. One of the few places in the market you can book a table!
