Dress warm, it is often cooler than expected on the spit! You never know what you might see out on the spit. Harbour seals, geese, small crabs and herons are common but always keep your eyes open for the chance to see orcas, eagles and owls. At the entrance is a water fountain and bottle filler, plus a dog fountain and a bike rack. As you walk down the path there are many great resting locations with benches provided to take in the views. Trash bins along the path and doggie bags are provided at the entrance. There are pit toilets at the entrance at the small park and another one halfway down the trail. A spit is a natural break that occurred due to the abrupt change in the coastline and the prevailing winds blowing at an angle to the coastline. This results in longshore drift formed from material and sediment depositing over time.

Sandcut Beach is situated between French Beach Provincial Park and Jordan River, just 31 kilometres west of Sooke on Highway 14. The majestic waterfall flows best in the spring, fall and winter. This day-use area is a longtime favourite of locals. It’s a perfect spot to plant your picnic basket and blanket to take a break for lunch. Cliffs line the beach and at the end there is a gorgeous rock formation that you can climb to get a bird’s eye 180 degree view of Juan de Fuca Straight and the Olympic Peninsula on a clear day. Sandcut beach is a great place for a campfire to roast a tasty lunch (please mind the fire restrictions), and if you’re lucky, you’ll even see a pod of whales playing out in the open water as you sit on the beach listening to the wind, waves and the pebbles tumbling in the surf.

Sombrio Beach is a popular surf spot and one of my personal favourite destinations on all of Vancouver Island. While the beach is beautiful and the atmosphere is lively, that is not the only reason it tops my list. Something most people don’t know about the area is that there is actually a gorgeous hidden waterfall only accessible from Sombrio Beach!

Mystic Beach is one of the area's most scenic beaches, located along the shores of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Sooke Oceanside Brewery, born and bred out of the desire to bring the love of craft beer to our west coast community of Sooke, British Columbia. The brewery was founded by Ryan Orr after an idea was born during a successful career as an executive chef. His downtime and passions were entertained in his garage – brewing beer. Dam good beer. The family began to grow. Priorities began to evolve. Ryan wanted to create an exceptional beer, to build a local craft brewery and introduce others to a phenomenal beer experience they have never seen before. Head brewer Garritt Lalonde joined the team, bringing experience, creativity, and a passion for brewing solid, classic, great tasting beer. Sooke Oceanside Brewery has evolved into a foundation of a lifelong journey with family, friends and the oceanside community, manifesting a long standing, award winning labor of love.

Bad Dog is a popular spot with locals dropping in to fill a growler or pick up packaged beer to go. It’s also a fun stop for tourists enjoying a west coast escape in Sooke. Cyclists will enjoy it as a reward after a steady climb up the town centre—at least it’s mostly downhill from there. The brewery’s playful name is reflected in its colourful, cartoony branding, and with dog-themed beer names like Tire Biter, Dizzy Dogs and Old Red. The brewery has a small tasting room, but the best way to enjoy their beers on site is to sit in the comfortable picnic area. FUN FACT Bad Dog occasionally brews a very special and unique beer called Octodog Apocalypse. This deep, dark stout is made with squid ink, imparting it with an abyssal blackness, as well as a lovely briny note, not unlike a traditional oyster stout. As heavy as that sounds. Octodog Apocalypse is actually quite light-bodied and quaffable.

The Renfrew Pub is the homey gathering place for locals and visitors at the heart of Snuggery Cove. Friendly and inviting, it’s the sort of place even first-timers swear they’ve been before. The waterfront pub and restaurant occupies an enviable spot, right next to the dock. The great room — with cathedral ceiling, gleaming 10-tap draught system, pool table and flat screen TVs — offers up micro-brews, tasty fare, and nautical charm. Come for lunch after exploring Botanical Beach, Lonely Doug, Sombrio Beach etc…

The one-of-a-kind, ocean-side village of Sooke (located on the south side of Vancouver Island) is a welcomed vacation from the busy lifestyle of the neighbouring city of Victoria. Sooke’s rural atmosphere gives the comfort of city life without the traffic. This area has been a thriving Coast Salish settlement for centuries. Living alongside a salmon river, the T’sou-ke peoples thrived in an area where seafood was in abundance, along with West Coast food, such as game and berries that could be harvested in the forests.

At first glance the ocean around Jordan River in winter looks grey and barren. The surprise, once you get out into it, is how alive it actually is. Seals pop up in the kelp beds to check your style, while black cormorants cruise around outside the takeoff zone. Waves average 2- to 4-foot sets of rights that break off the point. When it’s cold and raining, with the water temperature in single Celsius digits and a sky growing darker as the day wears on, you may well have the swells to yourself. The ideal board for British Columbia conditions is slightly longer (in the 7-feet-6-inches range) and wider than normal, and with three fins, which makes catching and controlling waves easier in less-than-optimum conditions. There is a convenient picnic park and a small campsite for overnight visitors at Jordan River

A small village at the end of Highway 14 on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island, Port Renfrew calls itself The Jewel of the West Coast, where you can experience the tranquility and beauty that has made the West Coast so famous. Port Renfrew is situated on the inlet known as Port San Juan, named Puerto de San Juan in 1790 by Manuel Quimper, a Spanish explorer who charted the Strait of Juan de Fuca in the late 18th century. As mail addressed to Port San Juan was frequently delivered to the San Juan Islands in error, settlers renamed their post office Port Renfrew in 1895, in honour of Lord Renfrew, who at one stage planned to settle Scottish crofters to work the land in the San Juan Valley. Port Renfrew provides visitors with the quintessential West Coast experience. It has all the makings of a fabulous outdoor destination, with wildlife, rivers, lakes, beaches, camping, hiking, fishing, surfing, and huge old-growth trees. Port Renfrew is best known as the trailhead for both the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail and the historic West Coast Trail, a world-famous hiking trail built in 1907 to save sailors shipwrecked on the rugged coastline. Both routes are rigorous hikes, with steep grades and roaring surf at almost every turn. Port Renfrew has a history rich in forestry and fishing, and today offers some of the best salmon and halibut fishing in North America. Tourist information, supplies, accommodation, camping facilities and fishing charters are all available in Port Renfrew.
