Tasmanian chain-saw artist Eddie Freeman has released these historical figures from their imprisonment in the Windmill Point macrocarpa trees. The sculptures depict workmen hauling ashore the telegraph cable that linked Tasmania to the North Island, the cable station was the messaging hub of the state until 1909. Matthew Flinders with his cat Trim, George Bass, and William Paterson are also represented. The site also has a BBQ and a playground featuring a wooden boat named after the HMS Buffalo - the ship that Paterson landed in 1804.

1835 the house was built as a home for the military commandant, and completed about 1827. Remembering that it is situated in Cimitiere St., and that Colonel Cimitiere was the military commandant, may give that story some credibility. However, recent research suggests that the house was very likely built by Lieutenant Matthew Curling Friend, ship's captain, who was appointed to the post of Port Officer in 1832. He administered the whole of the river port of the Tamar river, called Port Dalrymple, because in those days of course the ships were much smaller, and used to go right to Launceston. He moved from Launceston to George Town late in 1835 apparently on completion of construction.

A great jacket 🧥 is always a must when travelling Tasmania

Tassie weather can change quickly, I recommend a merino wool spencer for that layer of extra warmth, a t Shirt over the top and a jacket of the wind gets up. Your all set …. Sunscreen is a must.. !! Expect 4 seasons in one day … beautiful blue sky’s and friendly faces :)
