Ristorante Il Caldaro (restaurant The Pot ) You can reach this gourmand restaurant in one hour by foot directly from the cottage, going first downhill and then in the plain on a very little trafficked road. The restaurant is located in an old farmhouse with a beautiful view on the umbrian countryside. If it gets dark don’t worry: our "shuttle service" will take you back once you have finished your dinner!

To have lunch or dinner in the cloister or in the refectory of this beautiful abbey, in the peace of the Umbrian country, is an experience that clear up. Cuisine is seasonal. It's a good chance to visit the next medioeval church and the small historical city centre of Umbertide.

short hiking trails

Here are some easy trails, from brief to medium length, really near the Podere. Obviously there are many more than only these: just ask the host, who knows them all!
Castiglion Ugolino (Castle-village Ugolino) If you park in front of La Bruna’s church (just a few minutes by car from the Cottage), in nearly an hour and a half by foot you can reach Castiglion Ugolino, a little historical village that is now a luxury resort. The walk’s landscape changes step by step, you will walk in the plain then up the hill, through fields and then woods. On the way back, wine lovers can stop by the Vineria del Carmine.

(Green Path Ponte Pattoli) This trail runs alongside the Tiber River and arrives all the way to Ponte San Giovanni (st. John's Bridge), at the foot of Perugia. You can walk or go by bike through the trail, locals go there usually to exercise but it has also very nice country fields landscapes. The trail goes through different towns: you can stop by Ponte Felcino, visit the Bosco Didattico (Educational Wood) or have a drink or a snack at the Bar Bacco, a cosy café with a nice view on the river; or you can arrive to Ponte Valleceppi and chose to go all the way to Perugia through the "Sentiero delle Lavandare" (the washerwomen path); you can also just stop by Ponte (only “Ponte”, that is Bridge, for locals; “Ponte San Giovanni”, saint John's Bridge, for the rest of the world) and taste a slice of "torta al testo" at Testone restaurant, that produces the famous Umbrian "focaccia" in different places in Perugia and Milan.

The Montelabate trail is only at a few minutes distance from the Podere. You can park in front of Montelabate’s farmhouses and begin the ring trail that will lead you first to a ruined castle, now used as a paintball location, and then to the Ventia torrent, from which you will start following another old path. At the end of this path you will find another farmhouse and probably also grazing pigs. From here you will proceed on a larger and easier path slightly upward, arriving eventually at the imposing mass of Santa Maria in Valdiponte Abbey. The abbey and the nearby farm are owned by the Fondazione Gaslini and can only be visited on particular occasions, for example during the Frantoi Aperti (Open Olive Presses) event or the Giornate FAI (Heritage Days).

(Beechwood Tomb) After a 20 min drive from the Podere, you can park your car at San Giovanni del Pantano and then go on foot on an easy dirt road. Finding this Etruscan tomb, a small masterpiece of engineering in the middle of a wood, is a real discovery. They say that the sound made by the monolithic door rotating on its stone hinges is actually the voice of our Etruscan ancestors calling us from their afterlife...

Local people know it by the name "Montecorona hermitage". From the abbey on the plain (visit the beautiful medioeval church!) walk a rise called "la mattonata" that brings you to the hermitage passing by woods and glades. Here you can visit only the small church suggesting misticism, because the rest of the monastery is in total seclusion. Once in a year monks open the doors and share with visitors their incredible life.

bathing in the country

Some of the torrents and creeks of our area.
(The Rock) After a nearly 30 minutes ride, just before Città di Castello, you reach this lovely place near a torrent where you can bathe. You can park, descend to the torrent, refresh yourself in one of the basins or under one of the waterfalls, dry yourself in the sun and afterwards enjoy a nice slice of torta al testo (which they call here "ciaccia") with your favourite filling at the restaurant situated just on the other side of the road. It is the only meal served by this restaurant and it is the best in the whole of Umbria!

Camporeggiano-ascending the Lanna torrent You can park at Camporeggiano (about 20 minutes by car from the Podere) and walk along the Lanna torrent until you reach a point (after about an hour walk) where the torrent forms a basin with a little waterfall where you can bathe; after another 20 minutes by foot you’ll find a second basin, with a slightly higher waterfall. It is a fun outing, because you partly stay on the path and partly repeatedly cross the torrent from one bank to the other. Don’t forget to take shoes with you that you can wear in the water!

Biking Trails

Various trails, from very easy to easy, short or somewhat longer, but within everybody’s reach. We mention here the trails on cycling paths or roads thar are rather safe.
(The Huts of Sommavilla) I am not sure if I should regard this as a bike trail or a gastronomic recommendation. I love to follow this trail with friends when the days are getting longer and I also love the food, very mediterranean and varied, served in this nice informal restaurant. If you leave immediately from the Podere (or better from the plain, as the return would be a steep climb) walking on cycling paths or low-trafficked roads, immediately after crossing the border with Tuscany you can find this small restaurant, where on Sunday they serve a so called brunch (actually a sumptuous buffet lunch) with locally sourced produce from their own farm. You can also decide to just pedal, of course; or you could stop halfway, for example in Umbertide, and visit the beautiful Montecorona Abbey first, where in the cloister you can find the L'Abbazia (The Abbey) restaurant.; or maybe follow 3/4th of the trail and then take a refreshment at Nonna Gelsa’s little restaurant... A trail of 32 km almost completely flat, that ends with a few kilometers of a light, but inevitable, climb. The way back is all downhill!

To Ponte Pattoli by mountainbike This is a varied trail, combinable with the Green Trail. You can leave directly from the Podere or from the plain, and follow this road which is partly a dirt road and partly a grass road, with some short up and down moments. The road runs along the Tiber river; it is not unusual to encounter grazing cattle or wild animals.

Casa Del Diavolo-Piccione-Colombella-Bosco-Ramazzano Le Pulci ring (Devils’House-Pigeon-Little Dove-Wood-They Sweep Up the Fleas) It’s almost unbelievable, but these are the real names of these neighbouring places! For the bike lovers this is a 25 km long ring, very varied and panoramic. Do you love to climb? Then follow this biking trail in the order that I suggested. Do you like to go downhill? Then follow it in reverse order. The climb/descent ratio is as a matter of fact 50/50, the slope uphill is 159m. But be careful: a part of the trail in the plain is on a provincial road that is not really trafficked, but also not deserted. You can also go back and forth following the same panoramic road.

Wineries and cellars

Col Marinello (the hill where Podere Primavera lays) is vocated to wine! In the range of 3 km you can find three farms producing several wines from their own vineyards.
