Paignton’s main beach is famous for its red sand and, like Goodrington Sands, the beach is gently shelving and ideal for small children. The pier is full of “amusements” for the kids and Torbay Road which leads from the Vue Cinema behind the beach back to Paignton Station is full of “seaside shops”.

Slapton Sands stretches for nearly two miles. The beach is the site of Exercise Tiger, a rehearsal for the Normandy Landings in World War 2. A Sherman tank that was recovered from the sea and now stands in the car park at Torcross (at the southerly end of the beach) commemorates the 749 US servicemen who died when German E-boats attacked ships taking part in the exercise. Behind the beach is Slapton Ley, a nature reserve with a large freshwater lake. It’s also worth stopping at The Start Bay Inn in Torcross for their famous fish and chips. 20-minute drive from Dartmouth or catch the number 3 bus.
