Food scene

Wonderful local Mexican Tacaria. The food is delicious. Always order at least one item on the special's menu. According the urban lore, this place was Julia Child's favorite. Evidentially Child's lived in SB for a while. This place only takes cash an checks and the line is long so get there early and expect to wait for your food. My tip is get there a 11am order your food and bring it back to the house to eat!!

Fabulous sit-down Mexican Restaurant just 2 block down East Cota toward Milpas Street. They have great sauces and make sure to hit the chips and salsa bar. I love the seafood molcajete, which is served in a hot stone bowl. They have outdoor seating under heat lamps and after a few margaritas you can stagger home.

Chapala Market is a local institution for Mexican and Latin staples. It's an old school neighborhood market with a large meat section and the produce section includes tropical fruits. It's on the corner of Milpas and East Cota.

My house is in close proximity to shopping on Milpas including Trader Joe's, which has grocery staples, especially quick meals, snacks, and prepped produce ready to cook. My favorites are the frozen falafel and the lamb Vindalo. It's about 5 blocks away and you can walk their down Alisos Street or Milpas St.

This whole-in-the-wall french bakery in walking distance is worth this entire guide. You will have to stop yourself from going every day. They have authentic style french pastries with all the frills, multi-grain breads and standard black coffee to wash down the goodies. Don't leave SB without going here!! FYI this place is not gluten free.

The Farmer's Market in SB are well known. There is one on East Cota and Santa Barbara Street on Saturday from 8-1pm. You can get great organic produce. When in season get the organic strawberries or the Cherimoya fruit. SB area is one of the few places in the States where Cherimoya is grown and it's has a creamy custard texture and the flavors resemble pear/banana and magic. They are delicious and usually in season from January to May. There's also great local seafood at this market including local mussels, oysters and lobster. If you can't make the Saturday one there's another one on Tuesday evenings from 3-7pm on State Street.

This beach is a 10 minute drive, but it is a favorite of locals. And a great place to see the sunset and take a long walk on the beach. There's a wonderful eatery at the beach where you can have brunch and enjoy the ocean view.

East Beach is the closest beach to get to from my house. Just drive down Milpas Street (going south) and you will hit the beach. If you are an early bird, parking is free before 8am. There's a wonderful promenade that attracts both locals an tourist for a scenic walk. It's very lively all the time. The drive is 2-3 minutes. However, if you are a walker, like me, then you can actually walk down Milpas and get there. Here's a tip: walk down Alisos Street instead, since a more pleasant walk, and either turn right on Carpinteria St or Cacique St to get back on Milpas St and get to the beach. It's a 30 minute walk.

If you are interested in nature walks, then you might be interested in Parm Park. It's a 15 drive into the SB hills. They offer wonderful walks in Oak tree valleys that open up to hill top meadows with Ocean Views. Look up Parma Park for directions and trail head info.
