Gardiner is the North entrance of Yellowstone National Park, just 45 miles south on highway 89. Unfortunately, the Park entrance is closed this year due to spring flooding. The town of Gardiner is open where you can visit the Yellowstone Forever center, enjoy some great food, walk about, marvel at the Roosevelt Gate, and likely see a few elk and bison wandering.

Pine Creek Falls trailhead is a mere 3.5 miles south on the East River Road up Luccock Park road. It is an easy 2.5 mile out and back trail. Or continue up the path another 4 miles and 3,600 foot elevation gain to Pine Creek Lake (10.5 mile roundtrip). Other great treks nearby include Passage Falls, Suce Creek, Deep Creek, Livingston Peak, and Elbow Lake. Montana weather is variable and can change dramatically in a day and with altitude. Be sure you are prepared, know where you are going, and have bear spray. Montana is the wilderness! Look at a map, know your limits, and never hesitate to ask. The animals are wild but the people are friendly!

The spring 2022 floods have changed the course of the river and the community. The North entrance of Yellowstone National Park, 45 miles south on 89, is closed this summer due to spring flooding. Construction on 89 can cause delays. Cell service is not a given and the animals are real. Make noise when you travel in the backcountry, know where you are going, know your limits, and never hesitate to ask. The animals are wild but the people are friendly!
