Parks & Nature

In this category I have selected my favourite outings. You will notice that I’m drawn to the sea, and that I enjoy climbing high hills.
Go for a picknick by the sea, you won't regret it. The endless rocks are polished and flat. About 1 h 10 min drive from Nänsjö.

There are three ways of getting to the top of the Skule mountain. Either you climb the via Ferrata, or you walk the stairs, or simply catch the cable cabin. Spectacular view and a nice restaurant waiting you at the top.

In the deep and mystical woods of Viksjö, you will discover a beautiful valley with an ancient settlement of a millworkers now transformed into a visitor center. The valley contains a magnificent waterfall and the visitors center shows an exhibition of the predators living in the surrounding woods. You can also join a group for horseback riding on Icelandic ponnies through the landscape. The website has a summary in English if you look closely. www.vastanafallet.se

This national parc is a marvellous place for hiking or climbing the Skule mountain. Contact the Friluftsbyn for advice on how to organize your outing, or just take a map and find your own track. My favorite stretch starts at the south entrance (Entré Syd), going up to Slåtterdalsskrevan - including the detour for a nice view- and then to Tärnättvattnet. Continue along the coast back to your starting point . Useful homepages are: http://www.sverigesnationalparker.se/park/skuleskogens-nationalpark/ and www.friluftsbyn.com.

Every summer I climb up to the top of Valkallen mountain near the village Lövvik. It's not too challenging, takes about 30 min, and we´ve climed it with our kids from the age of around 4-5 years. There is a small cabin with a fireplace at the top, and of course, you’re rewarded with a fabulous view. This can also be made as a detour when trekking the High Coast Trail.

This is a nearby destination for an outing/picnic, just a few kilometres from Nensjö. An easy 30-40 minutes walk (no climbing) will take you up to the mountain top and the most amazing view over the High Coast bridge. You might however need some advice on how to get there, even if very close and accessible.

This is a place on earth where I find peace of mind. It used to be my secret hideaway, but has now become known and rather popular. It´s not a ideal for swimming, the rocks are slippery and depending on the weather the waves can get quite high. I still go there just to enjoy the beauty of the sea. Make sure to get there early in the morning to have the place to yourself. Bring your breakfast and start the day by greeting the sun.

This is truly a hidden gem along the coast. A short walk from the village brings you to a perfect spot on the rocks for a picnic and a swim in the sea. Closer to the village you will find sandy beaches, ideal for younger children.

If you only choose one mountain to climb in the High Coast, I suggest you make it this one. Make a right turn from E4 just opposite of Skuleberget and Naturum. If the traffic guards try to redirect you, just explain that you are not going to the Entré Syd of Skuleskogen. Just 1 km along the road there is a big parking lot on your left. This is the starting point for the trail up the mountain. A 20 minutes climb up the hill brings you to Predikstolen (the pulpit) with a spectacular view and a feeling of being on top of the world. Absolutely marvellous! I met several families with small children walking up to the top. Near the parking and camping area there is a nice public beach with shallow waters.

Omneberget is located in the very heart of the High Coast, near Nordingrå. The trail starts just next to the parking lot by the beach. Follow the sign Omneberget and look for the blue dots that will lead you to the top. Going up the mountain is quite steep, but no climbing is needed. I would say the hike is possible for a child from the age of 5-6 years. The climb takes about 30 minutes. Don’t miss the “sheep shelter” just before the summit. It’s fascinating. Of course the view from the top is magnificent and you will find a cabin and a table there for your picnic. Going down I would recommend to choose the easier path. You will see the sign indicating which way to go. It’s a bit longer but less challenging. Down by the parking area there is a lovely beach with plenty of fun for the little ones. Everything is free of charge, but please support the community initiative if you can by transferring an amount by Swish.

Sightseeing

In this category my recommendations offer something more than just beautiful scenery. You will find picturesque villages with old culture and architecture.
Spend a day around Lövvik, a genuine village with a small jetty. A bit further down the road from Lövvik there is a magic place called Rödhällarna (The red rocks). It's a hidden bay with silky rocks in fascinating formations, not a very good place for a swim with small kids, but a must if you're in the corner. Our favourite stretch of the High Coast trail follows the coastline from Lövvik to Rödhällarna.

Härnösand is a charming town with lots of nice spots to explore. Don´t miss Östanbäcken, the oldest part of the town, with wooden houses in traditional architecture. There is an outdoor museum (Murberget) and an art gallery in the city center (Konsthallen) both worth visiting. Also both the car museum and the boat museum are very appreciated, as well as the science and activity center for kids (Technichus) You’ll find several good restaurants here. Some of my favourites are Toppstugan, Vägg i vägg and Engströms Food&Deli. For a tasty hamburger I recommend Pelle’s or Clock. Both in nice settings. The town offers most services needed. Supermarkets, Systembolag, several pharmacies etc. I usually choose to go here for shopping, since the variety is better than in Kramfors.

The road from Aspby to Bjursta is very scenic, following the river upstream through a typical farmers landscape with tiny villages along the road. Especially in the evening when the sun is low, the whole valley gets a magic touch.

This island was once elected the most beautiful in the country. It's the perfect destination for a day trip. Take the ferry boat from Köpmanholmen (buy your ticket at the quay before embarking and don't forget to pay the parking fee!) Spend the day strolling through the piqturesqe fishermans village, visit the fishing museum and take a walk to the opposite side of the island where you will find a marvellous sand beach. There is a small café and shop, but I'm not sure if they serve food, so perhaps a good advise is to bring a picnic. We used to climb the Via Ferrata to the top of the Skule mountain with our kids from the age of about 9 years old. No need for previous climbing experience for the easy trail, but some physical capacity is needed. You will get rewarded with a magnificent view and a café waiting for you when you reach the top. If climbing seems too challenging, you can also walk the stairs or take the cable cabin to the top. www.viaferrata.se

At Häggby Gård, in the village By near Häggdånger, the owners are running an eco-friendly dairy farm where you find local products like cheese, ice cream and sausage, meat and bread for sale. Turn of the E4 13 km south of Härnösand (just where the car racing track is), and continue about 5 km on the small road. Highly recommended for a visit! www.haggbygard.se
